Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK) is the largest car manufacturing company in the UK which has a large number of luxury and classic cars and gradually evolved with the use of Technology. The technologies that are utilised by the company can be logistics solutions, financial systems for office use, critical production of the business and applications and solutions of customer-facing. The aim of the study is to identify the technology used by the car manufacturing company in their business operational process. The study also explains the challenges and issues faced by the organisation in the use of technologies.
2. Trends of technology in an organisation
Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK) has inaugurated and developed a special system with NASA named System Autonomous Mobility (SAM) to understand autonomous mobility completely. The system helps to complete the wishes of the driver as this technology is more aligned with the wishes of the driver. The technology makes the wheels more adjacent by placing the motors to fulfil the driver’s wishes. The technology of the Advanced Driver assistance system by Nissan offers assistance technology that everyone can utilise with immense confidence. As opined by Falco and Kleinhans (2018), using these technologies by the car manufacturing company provides immense flexibility in the driving process.
The mission of the company is to accomplish the goal of carbon neutrality across the operation of the company and the product’s lifecycle by 2050 with the emerging technologies. The car manufacturing company is thinking of offering the customer all electrified vehicles with the upgraded technology (Voronova et al.2020). The company, NMUK of the UK is trying to pursue future innovation in manufacturing technology and electrification to create progress on the Carbon’s neutrality goal of the company. Car manufacturing is following the trends of business technology in its operational process which helps to gain a competitive advantage in the market.
The Electrification process of operation in manufacturing offers unique and powerful and smooth driving to the motors which are environment friendly. The goal of the company is to use the technology in the electrification process to accomplish zero emission which can attract more customers. The company also focuses on the innovation of batteries and concerned technology which includes solid-state and improves the competitiveness of cost and more vehicles that are efficient (Goyal et al.2017).
The innovation and development of e-POWER electrified powertrains by NMUK helps in the accomplishment of larger efficiency of energy. The car manufacturing company anticipates that they should increase collaboration with the energy sector to brace the decarbonisation of the grids of power (Li et al. 2017). The improvement of the battery ecosystem of Nissan braces the generation of power and decentralisation with the use of renewable energy resources.
Technological innovation in the manufacturing process braces the larger productivity in the assembly of vehicles with the initiation of Nissan Intelligent Factory. The focus of the company is to make greater energy production and efficiencies in the material to enhance and brace the ambitions of long-term neutrality of carbon (Goyal et al. 2019). Focusing on using technology in innovative models of the categories of luxury and classic cars helps to take the leading position in the market. The company is also striving hard to develop their old models with creative innovation and also to gain a competitive advantage in terms of cost.
In today’s era, technology has a lot of involvement in the business which decides the loss and profit of the company. As opined by Ignat (2017), the process of digitisation has made businesses more transparent and increases the competition in the market. The launching of vehicles through the online platform provides more competition and the competitors can easily guess the strategies and goals of the company. The decision-making process also gets easier with the emergence of new technologies and the strategies are also developed through this. The company can easily interact with the stakeholders and meet their needs and demands through the upgraded technology.
3. Challenges faced by an organisation due to use of Technology
In today’s era, it is obvious that everyone is adopting technology to gain an advantage in the market and expand the business to earn more profit. There are several benefits in using the technologies in the manufacturing process and business but a lot of drawbacks are also there. Several issues are faced by the company, Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK in using technology which is explained below:
Excess production and related costs: One of the most critical challenges that the automotive industry is facing is the manufacturing of overcapacity of products due to excessive demand in the market. It is surveyed that more than 1 million units of commercial vehicles and cars are being manufactured in the UK. Nissan, the car manufacturing company of the UK, has invested more in the resources for the production of cars due to changes in the supply chain ecosystem of the automotive industry (Nissan.co.uk, 2021). The cost that is invested in the gathering of resources and raw materials has increased which relatively increases the purchasing cost of the product. As cited by Park (2020), excess production of the car leads to the financial loss which the manufacturing industry realizes and the over expenditure of the company leads to severe problems.
Connected Technologies and theory implications: The advancement in technology has become a major problem for the automotive industry. As cited by Sheng et al. (2019), digitalisation and data-driven have become commonplace with every functionality of the automotive industry and a wide amount of data are stored, evaluated and transferred. The modern cars are equipped with the electronics of automotive are apparent which collects regular data that surveys the parameters of performance, speed and component behaviours which authorises the extraction of insights of real-time. Nissan focuses on the technological changes where the implications do not pursue millennial interest and regular pressure (Nissan.co.uk, 2021).
Sustainability: Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK) has already focused on the use of sustainable resources by using clean fuel and with the use of electrification processes in the cars. The UK government has imposed several rules and regulations for the automotive industry to follow for the maintenance of the environment. The old cars that are manufactured by the company are not environmentally friendly and created a sustainable issue for the environment (Henriques et al. 2018). Increased emission of CO2 has led the government to impose high taxes on the car manufacturers which has added to their woes financially. It has found previously that the increased CO2 in the atmosphere has created negative publicity in the market which was difficult for the car manufacturers to set a profit margin for the company.
4. Conclusion
Based on the above study, it can be concluded that technology has made the business strategy and decision-making process easier for car manufacturing companies. Nissan, the leading car manufacturing company has used several technologies and innovative ideas for the manufacture of cars. The electrification process used by the NMUK in their modern luxury and classic cars helps the company to accomplish the goal of zero emission of CO2.
It is found in the study that the company has gained a competitive advantage in the market in terms of cost and features due to the use of technologies. An advanced driving system is also implemented by the company to fulfil the needs and wishes of the driver. Though there are lots of advantages in using technologies, the car manufacturing company has faced many challenges with the use of technology. Recommendations are also provided in the study that can be beneficial for the car manufacturing company, Nissan to gain more profit and expand the business.
5. Recommendation
Though the company are using technology in their modern cars for the better performance of the car there is some recommendation are listed below for more development:
Wireless Charging system: Wireless Charging system should be implemented by Nissan for luxury cars to be charged. As opined by Alruwais et al. (2018), previously, the electric vehicles were charged by connecting the cable cars which can be changed with the upgraded technology. Nissan must use the technology of wireless charging system for their electronic vehicles so that they can be charged in the parking areas or even in the home.
Brain to Vehicle: It is one of the most unique technologies that Nissan can use in their modern and expensive cars. The Brain to the vehicle is a unique technology where the driving gives pleasure to the driver by detecting and responding to their brain waves in real-time (Wilberforce et al. 2019).
In-house fuel cell stack: The car manufacturing company must utilise their technology in their innovation process. Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK (NMUK) already has this feature in their 1st model that is X-Trail FCV but there are some requirements for the improvements in this feature (Nissan.co.uk, 2021). This technology enables the fuel cell stack which is beneficial for the people using this car when they are in difficult situations.
