Supply Chain of Bioversity International:

The term supply chain management is defined as the overall process converting raw material into final goods. It is, therefore, considered one of the most important theories in the food industry. The function of supply chain management in the food industry is as follows:

  1. Supply chain management ensures that resources money and information is passed from the suppliers and vice versa to their consumers fluidly.
  2. Supply chain management ensures that all the activities such as logistics buying of raw materials are integrated in such a manner that the requirements of suppliers and consumers are satisfied.
  • Managing the entire process of transferring the raw material to final goods in the food industry is somewhat quite complicated. Therefore, effective use of supply chain management reduces the complexity.
  1. Perhaps the most crucial functions of supply chain management are the effective management of resources (Hochman et al. 2014, p.130).

  • Raw Material: Like every other industry, the supply of raw material is crucial in the food industry. However, it is important to note that in the food industry, quality of raw material holds more significance than any other existing industry. The raw material acquired in the food industry has to pass a number of inspections before being processed for final goods. Even slightest degrade in quality; can result in rejection of raw materials. Biodiversity International only considers the best quality of raw material for their company, as this will impact the quality of the final product and their reputation as well.
  • Supplier: partnering with the credible supplier is given a very high priority by the higher management of Biodiversity International. If the company fails to locate credible supplies not only the quality of raw material is affected but also puts a burden on the overall budget of the company. Although there are a large number of suppliers in the food industry, a larger number among them fails to meet even the basic quality test. Hence, selecting the best suppliers is crucial. It is also important for the higher authorities of Biodiversity International to negotiate with their supplier to get an access to a large number of raw materials at a minimum price.
  • Manufacturing: the term manufacturing in the food industry is defined as the process of converting the raw materials into a final product. This process is perhaps the most important one as proper manufacturing of raw materials decides the quality of final goods. Biodiversity International is one of the most reputable companies in the food industry. Their reputation is backed up by their quality manufacturing of food (Mallin et al. 2014, p.30).
  • Logistics: logistics is referred as the transportation of final good to the nearest outlets of a company. This is a vital component in the supply chain management because if the final products are not made available to the consumers on time, it reduces the credibility of the company among the customers. The distance of the nearest outlet is a very important factor in logistics. The more distance the transportation needs to travel, the more budget is required. Therefore, it is advised to set up the outlets as close to the factory as possible.

Supply chain management, in fact, is given a very high priority by the organizations belonging to the food industry. Basically, the world can be seen as one vast store network. Customers and makers are continually speaking with each other, and an item experiences numerous hands previously achieving its goal. Inventory network administration manages real issues, for example, the development of multinational companies, organizations, worldwide brand extension, and outsourcing.

Everything that influences the world influences store network administration, from fluctuating gas costs to ecological concerns. SCM is the absolute most critical business train on the planet today and has just gotten more interconnected. The significance of a well-run store network can’t be exaggerated. As per a report from Allianz SE, business intrusions (BI) represent higher extents of property misfortune than 10 years prior. From 2010 to 2014, claims from 68 nations were at $2.4 million by and large – all due to the inexorably interconnected store network.

Responsible marketing is somewhat considered to be a small extension of corporate social responsibility better known as CSR. Since past decade, a large number of organizations are globally accepting the concept of CSR in the business practice. This is due the fact adopting CSR has a tremendously positive effect on the reputation of the company. Along with this, CSR has also helped these organizations to enhance their reputation among their customers. Responsible marketing of Bioversity International can be broadly classified in following categories:

    I.          HR perspective: as per HR perspective, CSR has a huge influence on the internal operations of Bioversity International. This is because, when the ethical values of an organization are clear to all the employees, it allows them to enhance their productivity. Along with this, CSR allows the higher authority of Bioversity International monitors the development of individual employees. It is very common for the organization which does not include CSR in their system, to treat their employees with discrimination. The judgments of these organizations are often found to be biased and unfair. Therefore, these organizations face the problem of a high rate of employee turnover. However, as Bioversity International has adopted CSR in the HR policies, these problems have been reduced. Another important HR practice of Bioversity International is spreading accurate information and advice among employees.

In fact, this is one of the most important CSR policies of HR department of Bioversity International. This is because this allows various employees to have a better perception of their profile in the company, thus mitigating any misconceptions. This, in the long run, has been very effective for the overall performance of the company (Govindan et al. 2014, p.20).

II.           Marketing perspective: As stated before CSR, is a practice adopted Bioversity International like various other organizations to enhance their reputation in the market. The biggest driving factor behind the immense success of CSR is that it allows the company to change their profit making mentality and consider the wellbeing of their consumers. If a consumer feels that the company is looking forward to serving them with transparency and looking after even their slightest requirements without considering their own profit, it creates a very strong bond between them.

As the core principle of CSR emphasizes on opting for activities which are preventing damage to the environment. Therefore, no wonder Bioversity International have adopted CSR as their primary marketing strategy. Overall, with passing time, the expectation form CSR is growing at a rapid pace due to the high degree of rewarding to both the organization and their consumers. Conducting business with a high value of ethics is always appreciated by the customers.  Being socially responsible will earn a better profit beyond the expectation of the higher management of Bioversity International (Beske et al. 2014, p.140).

Recommendation:

As the global population is rising at a rapid pace, today, almost every country in the world is finding quite difficult to provide right proper nutrition to its native population. The global climate is changing at such a rapid pace that growing of food is becoming more difficult with each passing days.  Today, the global leaders have united with each other to find a permanent solution to this crisis.

Some of the countries such as the Middle East and a number of African countries are the worst sufferers of this problem. According to a recent study, the situation is so critical that, people from these locations are falling under the grasp of death at an alarming rate. The severity of the condition will be clear from the fact that death tools due to malnourishment has increased from 16% to 33% since the last decade.

It is reported that one in every three children in these locations does not make it to the age of five. The malnutrition has another side. Some of the most developed countries, on the other hand, are suffering from obesity or overweight. Obesity is one of the leading cause of cancer and other serious health issues.

There is, however, a number solution to mitigate this global crisis. First and foremost, it is important to make food supplements more readily available the areas where this crisis has hit the most. It is also necessary to make the food system more sustainable to the population. That is, balancing the overall production of food is required. It has been noticed that the smallholder farmers are more likely to be suffering from malnutrition.

This is due to the fact that, this smallholder farmer does not have an access to modern technology and required information which is essential to diversify the overall food system. As malnutrition is often considered to be a double burden it is important for the local government to monitor the growth of obesity in the region. It is hence, very important to make organic and healthy foods more public for the population. Additionally, it is always helpful to spread awareness about the dangers of obesity and all the sources which causes the problem.

Another effective solution to counter this problem is to invest in the better innovative interventions, which can enhance nutrition in a more cost-effective and in a sustainable manner. For example, fortifying the staple foods is both cheap and effective as well. And finally, it would be very effective to collaborate with some of the most reputable private food organizations in order to speed up the given solutions.

Conclusion:

In order to finally conclude it needs to state that, the resources are extremely limited. Therefore, it is important to make sure that they are used wisely. The people are the cause of these problems, and hence they have to take the responsibility coming up with a solution.

Malnutrition is claiming more lives than before if any immediate solution is not implicated, the situation will get worse.  In this scenario, it is the responsibility of every major food organizations and UN to take a step forward and provide a permanent solution. By spreading awareness about the problem might be only the first step and they have to travel for miles to achieve a hungry free world.
