Introduction
With the advent of the developments in the field of science, technology has had a huge impact on the educational institutions and the students. Much of the institutions have integrated modern methods of teaching and learning, that has facilitated better learning outcomes from the students. According to various research works, approximately, one out of three students are indulged in distance education in the United States of America. For such various reasons, there appears a growing need for technology to play its part, and promote peer learning. The research work provides with a comparison between two articles by Stanley and Zhang (2020), and Cocieru et al. (2020) that base their studies on the benefits of peer learning, in online business education, and stands in clear contrast to that of the traditional means of education.
Analysis
Similarities
According to the concepts proposed by Stanley and Zhang (2020), and Cocieru et al. (2020), it would be wrong on someone’s to consider peer learning to be an undifferentiated education strategy. There are various activities among the students, that are encompassed by peer learning. The two mentioned articles clearly highlight the need to promote peer learning in the modern world, opposed to that of the traditional methods used in institutions to teach the students.
However, when looked at it with a closer perspective, the actual term of peer leaning appears to remain abstract. In the manner the term is used, it generally indicates a two way method, or a reciprocal learning activity. Peer learning, in both the articles, have proved to be mutually beneficial to the students learning business through online classes. Moreover, it gives them the opportunity to share the knowledge acquired amongst them, and the ideas and experiences gained. In the broader sense of the term, it has made the students go beyond independent, to becoming interdependent, in respect to studies.
The work of both the authors, in their respective articles, emphasize on the importance of peer learning, and the implications that it may have on the future of the students. Stanley and Zhang (2020) is of the opinion that, without the presence of an actual person in authority, it becomes easier on the student’s part to share their ideas to their peers, by a significant amount. While participating in activities, helps the students to gather newer skill sets and knowledge from their colleagues and counterparts. The most important of all, according to Cocieru et al. (2020), skills can be developed on an organizational level, as well as the managerial skills can be attained, which would help the students to work in a collaborative manner, which would present them with the opportunity to receive and provide feedbacks, and for self-assessment. In the United States of America, peer learning has quite a reputation to being an important part of the educational curriculum, since the inception of distance education.
A clear contrast has been drawn with that of the traditional means of by Cocieru et al. (2020), where formalized peer learning can provide with more effective way of learning for the students. At times, when the staff members of an institution find greater demand, peer learning can be a way for the students to learn from themselves. In terms of practice, peer learning obviously has greater aspects on offer, when compared with the traditional means. The responsibility of learning on their own, is the biggest of all the impacts that peer learning has on the students, opines Stanley and Zhang (2020). Such a modern means of teaching should not be taken for as a substitute to teaching by the staff members of an institution. It has been a significant addition to the world of teaching, that has most certainly enhanced the quality of business education.
Although peer learning has provided the students with the impetus of sharing the knowledge amongst themselves, but, from the perspective of Stanley and Zhang (2020), if the ways and means of the same are examined in which it is put to practice, they are generally introduced in an ad hoc manner, where their implications are not considered at all. Unsymmetrical integration of peer learning practices within an institution, may take the students by surprise, when it comes to the approach required to own the same. In doing so, they addressed that the students may even go on to lose the interest to learn new things. When it comes to peer learning, much of the activities are not supervised by the teachers, which may sometimes benefit the students in a disproportionate manner, which are used to the presence of a teacher.
Differences
Data analysis has been conducted in both the research works. In the article where Cocieru et al. (2020) draws the comparison with the traditional means of education, matrices were prepared for every class, before the start pf the semester, between the semester and after the semester. With a network density and with an average degree measurement, it was hard to comprehend the single network. It is cohesion that can be used in the best manner during comparative studies. Class cohesion, when measured can provide with a greater insight on the other classes as well. Comprehending the differences between network densities are important to understand, but might be a difficult task at times as well.
In the other article by Stanley and Zhang (2020), data had been analyzed as well. The results of which showcase the importance of the increment in the number of students opting for online classes. The results of peer learning have been on the positive side. But a fewer study suggests the breakdown of different forum components. It is important to note the fact that, with the technological advancements been made, it becomes important to implement the same, within the institutes. At the same, it also becomes important to welcome changes within its structure, even though the change may be a difficult option to follow. With peer business learning, it not only enhances the interactions between students, but prepare them for the future, where the colleagues play a major role sharing their knowledge on specific areas that require assistance.
