1.2 Selected key readings
According to Abualoush et.al. (2018) training and development are essential for improving the employee’s performance as it significantly aims at developing the skills of employees. It is the practice performed by human resources as they know about the employee’s efficiency by managing their performance. Other than that, providing required training to the employee will help in enhancing their performance and it can help them in achieving future growth essentially. Training and development is the concept that refers to educational activities inside a company to improve the skills and knowledge of employees by offering them information and guidance about the ways to perform any task excellently. Other than that, providing training to employees also helps human resources in retaining talented employees and enhances the productivity and profitability of an organisation.
Furthermore, it has been seen that the companies that learn faster and adopt changes as per the market competitiveness enhance their work efficiency. In achieving organisational objectives employee performance is very essential as per Mira et.al. (2019). Successful employees are highly dedicated to their work and complete the given task in the given time. An employee that feels motivated and influenced improves their ability to work efficiently. Other than that, providing them training and development help in analysing their talents and perform effectively. According to Employee training and development, (2020) it is the responsibility of human resources to manage the performance of their employee so they can provide them with the efficient knowledge required.
If any employee is not performing efficiently then it can affect the performance of the entire team or organisation so it is mandatory to enhance their work efficiency by offering them the required knowledge elaborated by Chen et.al. (2020). In short, it can be determined that good employees are productive, hence; creating excellent working environments and enhances their work-efficiency as well. The success of the company is not only dependent on its great location or manufacturing capability but it also depends on the HR strategy to grow big and stand competitive in the market. Google focuses on developing their employee’s talents so they can grow their skills and improves the organisation’s growth as wel as per Vibons, (2020). At Google, about 80% of training programs run through Googler-to-Googler (g2g) network known as an employee-to-employee network.
In this network, Google allows their employees to take on-the-job training and influences them to offer this back to another employee. Using the g2g network, the company trusts its employees to be capable, smart, and motivated. It also helps the employee to improve their organisational learning capacity along with their professional growth. Google believes in providing micro-learning- the whisper course. It means they deliver content that is small and digestible by their peers instead of hiring a training team elaborated by Google does learning and development, (2020). The approach is used in the science of memory retention and it helps in processing the information easily. In this way, there are various training and development programs used by Google and it helps them in improving their work efficiency and development. Hence, it can be seen that training and development play a major role in improving the employee’s performance.
1.3 Two appropriate research methods
According to Stokes, (2017) research methods are described as the various processes, schemes, and algorithms used to complete research. Research methods are useful for collecting various data related to the research topic and it helps in analysing the significant problem effectively. Every researcher selects the research method based on the information required to complete the research. There are different types of research methods are there that can be used by the investigator to meet the aims and objectives. The current research methods used for this study include qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Qualitative research methods:
It includes various research methods of data collection that include observations, visual or textual analysis, and interviews (Hennink et.al. 2020). The qualitative research methods are used for concluding the results collected from secondary research to understand the core concept of human resources. The secondary method for collecting data is used to analyse the already published data and for this purpose, the data is collected through various journals, articles, and online websites. They are applied essentially for summarising the data gathered so the proper concept of training and development is defined. Other than that, different articles are used to define the proper concept of human resources. The secondary method is used to provide the literature review so the end-user can understand the proposal appropriately.
Furthermore, qualitative research methods don’t involve mathematical, numbers, or calculations. It is primarily associated with analysing the feelings, emotions, sounds, colours, and elements that are not quantifiable. These are the methods used to get in-depth knowledge of the research topic and the data analysed using this method is from the secondary method. Data collected using the secondary method enhances the gathering of data as it offers various sources for selecting the appropriate data. The researcher has the chance to select the data that is more valid and appropriate (Byrd, 2020). For instance, different published articles give several definitions for human resources and training & development and the qualitative research method helps in summarising the different definitions qualitatively that will be more relevant.
Along with that, Qualitative research is a kind of scientific research and it consists of an investigation that includes seeking answers to the research questions (Sherif, 2018). It systematically utilises an adequately defined set of processes to answer the question and helps in collecting appropriate evidence. The strength of these research methods is their ability to offer easy and quick descriptions of the way people can understand the answer to the selected research issues. Other than that, qualitative research methods are efficient to identify intangible factors such as socioeconomic status, social norms, gender roles, and many more (Corti, 2018). In this context, qualitative research methods used for secondary data collected are the best way to get relevant and appropriate answers for the research question.
Moreover, the qualitative research method is also used to analyse the effectiveness of training and development programs in improving the employee’s performance and the way it affects organisational growth. It helped in enhancing the quality of research so the users can understand the entire concept of research adequately. Qualitative research arises from open-ended questions as it gathers data differently (Qualitative Research Methods Overview, 2019). Researchers have the chance to investigate methodologies with more accuracy. For example, one article defines human resources as the method to motivate and influence employees and the second article describes human resources as the management process for recruiting, selecting, rewarding, and retaining employees. Understanding both definitions and finding relevancy can be achieved by using qualitative research methods.
The qualitative research method utilises a smaller sample size as compared to other methods because numerous data is available and the investigator just has to summarise them effectively. Other than that, it also saves money and time because data is collected using internet sources instead of going to different stores and companies to collect data as per Johnston, (2017). It can be most useful when the data is required to be gathered quickly so fast decisions can be made efficiently. It can collect the information that is most specific for completing the research. Finding relevant information about employee performance can be collected by analysing the growth of an organisation as it can be declared that organisation growth is primarily dependent on the work-efficiency of employees and the organisation’s productivity.
Using the qualitative research method is also beneficial for improving the knowledge and skills of the investigator. It is because the data is collected from various sources and the researcher will analyse the most appropriate data after reading several articles that help them in improving their skills. In this analysis, the analysis is done based on the experience of the researcher that means the information gathered is based on the things that researcher thinks it’s true as per Gaille, (2018). Other than that, reading numerous papers and articles may lose some data that can be relevant and gives an adequate answer to the research question. These are some gaps analysed and the benefits that push the researcher to select this method for completing the research is defined.
Quantitative research methods:
It can be described as the method for collecting information and analysing numerical data. It is the opposite of qualitative research methods as it helps in analysing the real-time data conducted by the researcher itself. This kind of research method is used in three main types of research. it includes correlational, descriptive, and experimental research (Apuke, 2017). The data is collected by selecting a group of people that are relevant for getting data concerned with the research aims and objectives. The data can be collected using various primary methods such as online surveys, questionnaires, online polls, and many more. The results are collected in the form of numbers and further are sampled so accurate data can be depicted.
Furthermore, in this current research method, investigators develop mathematical frameworks so the data gathered can be sampled based on the quantitative analysis. Other than that, it possesses close-ended questions and is described as data-oriented research. After that, primary quantitative research is used for conducting market research as per Goertzen, (2017). In this current study, the method is used for collecting data from different human resources managers and employees to analyse the training and development process held in Google. For this purpose, the data is collected using online questionnaires. The online mode is selected because of social-distancing norms followed by every nation so the spreading of Covid-19 can be stopped.
The questions are framed in such a manner to analyse the training and development program used by the company to improve their employee performance. Some questions are framed so the human resources can answer the essentiality and benefits of training & development in their organisation. Other than that, some questions are asked from the employees working in the company so they can provide adequate information about the training they get from the company. These data collected will help in summarising the real-time and appropriate information gathered by analysing the views of another person as well. On the other hand, the method is used to collect observable data to answer a research question using computational, statistical, or mathematical techniques. In comparison with qualitative data, it can be declared that the results concluded from this research method are more accurate and relevant elaborated by Queirós et.al. (2017). This method requires more time as compared to the qualitative research method.
Furthermore, the method is used so the data gathered can be tested and checked so it makes the result more reliable and understandable by end-user. It is more beneficial as the researcher will not only depicts their thinking but describes the conclusion based on other people thinking as well. The final results or responses collected will be declared numerically and it will help the end-user to measure the high probability of results. It is necessary to form a research question that is clear and precise so the respondent can answer appropriately without any confusion as per Devault, (2020). The gaps that can be analysed are it is not useful for providing quick decisions as it is time-taking and the entire process will need more time than secondary research. Other than that, it is very challenging to form a research model for conducting quantitative research as a hypothesis must be developed very carefully.
In this way, researchers have used both qualitative and quantitative research methods so the real-time data can be gathered using the primary method and published data can be collected using the secondary method. Merging both methods can be beneficial and enhances the quality of the entire research.
Section-2 Instrument and conclusions
2.1 Instrument
The research instrument selected for the current research proposal is survey questionnaires as it helps in collecting the real-time data so the objectives of the research are met (Menken et.al. 2020). In my opinion, the questionnaire is a type of instrument that forms different questions to gather information’s from the respondents selected. Research questions can be described as a mixture of open-ended and close-ended questions. Open-ended questions allow respondents to elaborate their thoughts and on the other hand, close-ended questions refer to questions that are provided with several options to answer form. In the current research, the close-ended questionnaire is used so the respondents can reply o the questions as per the options provided.
The questions are designed after analysing the concept and importance of training and development. After preparing the literature review using the online sources helps in making a clear decision about forming a question that makes the conclusion more accurate. Other than that, the instrument used is helpful if the questionnaire is designed excellently can collect numerous data in few times. In the current scenario, the online method for sending a questionnaire to respondents is used and it is time-efficient as well. It is because the questionnaires will be sent through e-mails and respondents will find it easy to answer in their free time.
Along with that, surveying online survey using the internet is cost-effective as well as it provides great features in designing, analysing, and distributing the responses collected as per Rahi, (2017). According to my concern, the data collected using this research instrument can be matched with previously available data online and this strategy will help in clarifying the results to a great extent. Other than that, I would like to follow a sequential format so the respondents can answer the question appropriately after understanding the significant concept behind the questions. Closed-ended questions are selected for using this instrument effectively by allowing responses that ultimately fit into the category of questions and it is decided by the researcher.
In my opinion, closed questions help respondents in providing information that is easily transformed into quantitative data. Other than that, it is easy for the researcher to conclude the results as the responses are selected from the choices provided (Copeland, 2017). The questions are prepared in such a manner that will help in collecting answers related to training and development programs held by the human resources at Google. On the other hand, the experiences of employees during training and development sessions will also be analysed so to analyse its effectiveness. Other than that, organisations growth will be reviewed so the efficiency and effectiveness of learning sessions on employee’s performance can be evaluated deeply.
Along with that, I took help from different sources for preparing the questions so I can monitor the problems and queries related to training and development faced by employees. Secondary data published on the internet about the training & development program held by Google was also analysed by me so the clarity of questions can be enhanced. In my opinion, I also described a question that makes the concept of human resources clear to employees and managers so the effectiveness can be enhanced.
2.2 Conclusions
It has been concluded from the entire research proposal that training and development play a crucial role in improving employee performance. It also helps in improving the productivity of the organisation along with profitability. The two research methods selected for completing the research are qualitative and quantitative. There is a requirement of explaining the concept of training and development and employee performance so the secondary method of data collection is utilised effectively. On the other hand, online published data also helped in collecting information for monitoring the efficiency of training and development on employee’s performance and the way it affects the organisation’s growth.
Furthermore, the research methods are chosen so wisely by the researcher so the data gathered for completing the proposal effectively and accurately. The researcher has also selected a primary method of collecting data so the real-time data about the training & development programs at Google can be analysed efficiently. These real-time data are then compared with the already published data by other authors so the relevancy of the research proposal can be improved. In this context, the researcher has to use different statistical tools for summarising numerical data collected using quantitative research methods. The research proposal also concludes about the efficiency of both research methods and some gaps are also analysed. Comparing both the methods depicts that the qualitative research method is less time-consuming in context with the quantitative method.
The research instrument used for collecting the primary data is an online survey questionnaire. The questions are prepared for collecting responses from human resources and employees working at Google. It will help in getting the more accurate data along with making comparisons with the previously published data. Comparing the data will help in enhancing the relevancy and accuracy of data collected using both methods. After that, the structured research proposal is very helpful for conducting a further investigation as the information is provided in-depth. It also offers clear, relevant, valuable, and precise information that is worthy and used by other researchers as well. The language used is very easy and understandable that provides readers a more concise view of the research topic.
