Tata Motors
Introduction:
Tata group is an exclusive aggregate of 30 organizations, and working all throughout the globe. It is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and it was established by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in 1868. In 1877, they started the textile business in Nagpur. Tata Motors Limited is one of the subsidiaries of the Tata group.
Tata Motors Limited has established in 1945, and also headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It consists of two business units PCBU and CVBU. Tata Motors Limited has more than 8400 sales and service points in India. Tata motors Limited acquired companies and improve their presence abroad. Tata motors Limited launched its first indigenously designed car in 1998. There are 16 subsidiaries of Tata Motors Limited, including Jaguar Land Rover. Tata Motors Limited won awards across six categories.
Organizational Structure:
In 1945, Tata Motors Limited started with a flat organization structure. The entire decision making has been done by the top-level managers only. Later on the flat structure has been changed with the hierarchy structure and there is the involvement of every manager at their level in decision-making and it also leads to facing difficulty in communication. In 2017, a news article has been published stated that According to Chief HR Officer of Tata Motors Limited, “In recent times organizational structure was hierarchical, and now it’s flat. Recently there were 140 designations and it has been reduced to 5”. Due to this, the HR department is facing some challenges like promotions.
Leadership:
In the Tata group, the leader Ratan Tata follows the democratic style of leadership approach. Apart from that, Ratan Tata has used autocratic and laissez-faire in previous times. He is democratic because he always encourages everyone to participate. The future leadership is well informed about future strategies, and well engaged in the decision- making process. HR is entirely involved in the process of decision-making and management seeking and acting upon HR guidance. Tata group adopt the pluralistic approach as they believe in communication and participation from every employee in the decision making process.
Management Style:
The theory of Human relations is entirely suitable for the Tata Motors Limited. “Human Relation theory discussed about the human problems which arises due to interpersonal relations” (Webster, 1946). The human relation theory by Elton Mayo discussed about psychology and understanding behaviour, aspect of work, and motivation to make employees more productive. Tata group follows the same management concept at their workplace.
Organizational Culture:
The organizational culture represents the policies of an organization that guides the employees. It is comprised of values, beliefs, and employee behavior within the organization. Tata Motors Limited’s core values are shared goals, principles, and standard. The culture is formed of core values of an organization and Tata Motors Limited’s core values include diversity, quality, accountability, and integrity and leadership. The core values play a vital role in employee behaviour. Each employee accepts and understands these values and modifies their behaviour accordingly.
Conclusion:
Tata Motors is the largest automobile company in India. The organizational culture represents Tata’s style of management and leadership also provides strength to the core functions of the company. Recently company changed its organizational structure from hierarchical to flat which creates a lot of challenges to HRM. However, to deal with this change Tata Motors Limited introduced a new salary structure and rewards will be given to the best performers.
