At present, more than two billion people are accessing Google which is significant as compared to other companies in the same industry (Immelman and Griebie, 2020). Sundar Pichai contribution is very important in such immense success and huge customer base. There are several examples where Pichai proves that he is the most eligible person who can lead such a giant company. His leadership skills and behavior’s are discussing below:
Inclusive leader– According to surveys Sundar Pichai is empathetic, supportive, graceful, and self-deprecating leader at navigating political minefields. He believes in empowering people and considers them in their strategy making process (Elisa et. al. 2021). He avoids conflicts rather than confronting people.
Communication– Communication is the most important trait of any leader and Sundar Pichai is popular for its effective communication skills. As per the review of Forbes Editor Susan Adams ‘Pichai is very good speaker who always ensures that every person he interacts on his team understands objective’. Hence, the effective communication skills make them good leaders.
Team-player- Pichia believes that helping team members to accomplish their task and solving their problem is his primary job. He proves the same by ensuring that their team members should be motivated and engaged (Ahmed, 2018). He also focuses on establishing effective collaboration within a team in order to achieve goals and develop personal relationships.
Flexible– As per the case study of Sundar Pichai, he proposed to launch Google Chrome and thus he built a 10-member team. However, when he presents the prototype of the project Larry Page and Sergey Brin resist his idea as they do not want to challenge Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. At that time, Pichai’s resilience and flexibility proved that Chrome was one of the most successful initiatives of the company (Aponte-Moreno, 2022). At present, Chrome acquires more than 68% of market share as compared to Explorer whose market share extends to less than 7%. Hence, such events prove that he is the best leader.
Simplicity– Pichai is the CEO of one of largest companies in world but still he lives a simple life and does not hesitate to interact with his junior employees. There are several examples when he proves that he is very down to earth and simple.
Other than these mentioned traits, there are several skills like collaboration, humanity, emotional intelligence, transformation, visionary, and more which makes them good leaders and proves his positive behavior’s.
Impact Sundar Pichai’s skills and behavior’s on Google and employees
Google’s success is evident from its popularity and customer base and Pichai’s contribution is significant. However, without the help of employees it is not possible and at the same time, 74% of Google employees give positive feedback about Pichai’s leadership skills (Schmidt et. al. 2019). He is a proactive leader where he considers their employees first which increases their satisfaction level. It is a well-known fact that satisfied and engaged employees are more productive and higher performers than less satisfied. Pichai’s introverted, simple, emotional intelligence, and collaboration enables him to understand employee’s problems and expectations. On the other hand, his visionary and transparency traits help him to identify potential opportunities and threats which is very useful for the company’s competitiveness. In addition to this, Wired survey shows that 54% of employees are satisfied with their financial package which is 197000 Dollar. Google is the second highest paying company in the world. However, Pichai also faced allegations of ignoring employee’s problems and making quick decisions without thinking about its consequences.
According to the CEO Genome Project chief executives tend to have four particular behavior’s which are: Decisions made with speed and belief, focus on engagement, readiness to adapt, tendency towards reliability. According to this model Pichai demonstrates deciding with speed and conviction. As per the New York Times, Google executives are worried that the company is showing cracks due to decisive leadership (Wakabayashi, 2021). Moreover, Pichai was accused of preventing innovation with slow and cautious decisions. Hence, it proves that some traits of Sundar Pichai prove dangerous for the company as well as employees.
