1. Introduction

Change management in an organization can impact the organizational business process both positively and negatively. The aim of the study is to reflect the change process in the organizational management of the chosen organization Sainsbury’s that is a famous retail organization in the UK. The two changes that have taken place in the retail organization such as leadership and organizational structure have been evaluated in this study. Relevant theories and models for leadership have been applied to analyze the changes that have taken place in the retail organization. Recommendations to improve the future change management in Sainsbury’s have been included in this study.

2. Critical reflection on a change process

Change in an organization is inevitable even if it is not desirable in terms of securing the future sustainability of business in an organization. As per the view of Kuchmaeva and Savchina (2019), every year in the UK nearly 20 to 30% of business organizations face major business failure due to their inability to adopt changes. On the contrary, the organizations that adopt changes in their management become able to successfully secure their business sustainability for the future. Organizational change refers to the changes in an organization regarding technology, management, leadership style, structure, and others.

Organizational structure refers to the system that is followed within an organizational culture in terms of achieving organizational goals effectively. As stated by Sumathi (2017), change in organizational structure can refer to the changes in the organizational rules, roles, and responsibilities. In the current business era, changes in organizational structure in Sainsbury have been conducted in terms of securing its business sustainability in the future competitive business market. The change that the famous retail organization has adopted is shifting its traditional retail business in supermarkets to online retail business. In this aspect, the entire supply chain of the famous retail organization has been affected both positively and negatively (Kuchmaeva and Savchina, 2019). Positive changes include the increment in market size and customer segment of the organization that can help the organization to earn more profit from its business.

The present business era defines that technology implementation is necessary for the organization as the global business sectors have been digitized. As argued by Krasyuk et al. (2019), technical implementation has caused many complications to the organizational business process. The majority of the workers that are not familiar with technological factors have faced problems in the organization. As opposed by Mahroof (2019), after the technical implementation, people that prefer to make online purchases have shown their interest in the organization. The business process of Sainsbury’s has been changed due to the technical implementation in its business. Previously, the organization used to sell its products in the supermarkets where people used to purchase products by visiting the market physically. However, future business sustainability of the organization has been ensured with business digitalization in this organization.

Leadership

Leadership style suggests the techniques followed by the management of an organization to operate its business in the organization. In terms of Sainsbury’s the organization used to apply an autocratic and democratic leadership style based on the situation. According to the view of Chandra and Kumar (2018), the autocratic leadership style is not supportive in terms of motivating the employees to work for the organizational business development. It can even cause frustrations among the employees regarding the work culture in the organization. In the present situation, the organizational management applies transformational leadership theory for that the managers can operate the workers as per the organizational requirements (Bakari et al. 2017). In this process, the managers have been able to address the required changes in the organization in terms of achieving its organizational goals and objectives.

Contemporary leadership styles such as transformational and transactional leadership styles can be helpful for the leaders in Sainsbury’s. Transformational and transactional leadership styles can help the employees to give their best performance for organizational development. As opined by Martinez et al. (2019), contemporary leadership styles can be helpful for any organization to enhance its business productivity in the globally competitive business market. Effective leadership style has improved the overall business productivity in the organization. Changes in leadership style have helped the managers to understand the needs of the employees in the organization (Tengberg and Valencia, 2018). Effective leadership style has helped to mitigate the cultural bias in the UK retail sector such as Sainsbury’s.

Emotional intelligence: In this aspect, it can be recommended to the management of Sainsbury’s to apply emotional intelligence to the employees to understand their needs in the organization. Fulfilling the basic needs like love, belongings, increment, equal pay, and others can encourage the employees to work in the organization for its business development (George et al. 2019).

Motivation: Proper guide and motivation can help the employees to give their best performance for achieving the organizational goals. As per my opinion, rewards, increments, appreciation can be helpful to motivate the employees to give their best performance for the organizational development.

Cultural intelligence: Building cultural intelligence in the organization can help the manager to establish a good professional relationship with the employees. As influenced by Sayyadi (2019), cultural intelligence can help a leader to handle various critical situations in an organization. In this aspect, cultural intelligence can be beneficial for the leader to convince the employees to adapt to the changed management.

Proper training to the employees: I have understood from the critical analysis of the change management that has taken place in the famous retail organization Sainsbury’s that the employees need to be trained. As per my opinion, changes in the organizational structure such as from traditional supermarket to online retailing, several changes happened. As a result, proper training on the changed business procedure needs to be given by the training manager of Sainsbury’s (Sainsburys.co.uk, 2021).

Effective marketing: The majority of the customers that make traditional purchases of grocery items have no idea of the change in the organizational structure of Sainsbury’s. In this case, effective marketing can help the organization to reach the customers and convey the new business structure of the most popular retail shop in the UK. The high rate of employment suggests that most of the customers are working who do not have time to visit the supermarkets for purchasing grocery items. In this aspect, effective marketing can help the customers to get acknowledged with the change conducted in Sainsbury (Kuchmaeva and Savchina, 2019). As a result, the total number of customers of Sainsbury’s will be increased which will be helpful for the organization to earn more profit and secure its business sustainability for the future.

4. Critical review of relevant theories & paradigms

Multiple theories and models are there to justify the most appropriate theory for change management in an organization. In this study, Lewin’s change management model has been described in order to justify the changes that have been made by Sainsbury’s. The model suggests that the change process needs to be done through three consecutive stages such as unfreeze, change, and refreeze. According to the view of Sumathi (2017), unfreezing refers to the stage in which employers prepare themselves for an upcoming organizational change. After getting prepared for the upcoming changes, the organizational management attempts the implementation of the required changes. Effective communication skills along with an effective leadership style are required for this change. The leaders of the organization decide to change the current organizational structure or strategy for business sustainability.

Effective leadership quality and strategy are crucial in the unfreezing stage as the leaders convince the employees to retain in the company even after the changes. In the words of Chandra and Kumar (2018), effective communication skills of the management are required for convincing the efficient employees to remain in the organization. After the implementation of the required changes in Sainsbury’s the effective leaders refreeze the updated leadership strategies and organizational structure. The employees and stakeholders have been convinced to trust the changed business management strategy of the organization. These changes can help Sainsbury’s to earn more profit as changes in the organizational structure can attract more customers and expand the business market and net profit.

5. Conclusion

Sainsbury’s has undergone several changes in its business management such as changes in organizational structure and leadership style. The concluding statement of the study suggests that changes in the business organizations in terms of their business process are necessary. Changes in the management and organizational structure can help the organization to earn more profit from its business process. Effective marketing can help the organization to convey its current business process to the customers that are existing and prefer online purchasing. Critical evaluation has been conducted in this study in terms of the changes applied by the organization in its organizational management and structure. Relevant theories and models have been applied in this study to justify the current changes conducted in the organization. Several recommendations have been given as to the lessons learned from the change process in Sainsbury’s.
