Abstract
An organization is unable to run without a team of skilled labour and due to the current situation Tesco has also been facing difficulties in retaining workers, as well as recruiting new employees. Additionally, Tesco needs to be updated with all the latest technological advancements and implement them in the business for the customers to have a good shopping experience.
Introduction
It needs to be stated that every organization needs a Human Resource Management (HRM) department, as HRM helps an organization in any given circumstances and provide guidance, in case any unforeseen circumstance takes place. Other than that, HRM also helps an organization by recruiting the most suitable candidates who help a company to achieve organizational goals and, in this report, the effectiveness of the HRM department will be discussed critically.
Brief description of the business case
It may be stated that Tesco is a global organization and has several employees working in that organization and in order to maintain a massive workforce the leaders need to work together with the HRM department to ensure a positive work environment (Tesco.com. 2021). Other than that, Tesco has a huge consumer base and the taste and preferences of consumers keep changing and the company needs to keep changing products and introduce different items in the store (Refer to Appendix 1). Thus, the leaders of the organizations take help of HR practitioners to implement strategies that help Tesco to keep updating the inventory in order to meet consumer’s demand. Furthermore, to keep up with the competitive market, Tesco needs to update its technology, which may provide the consumers a seamless experience while shopping from any store of the supermarket.
According to Tesco’s annual report the company has recruited almost 50,000 employees temporarily to work for the company amidst the first lockdown that was imposed in the UK (Refer to Appendix 2). It may be mentioned that several of these employees still work for the company and in addition to that, Tesco has created 20,000 permanent jobs as well (Tescoplc. Com. 2021). Additionally, every organization nowadays is required to adopt a green initiative for business and Tesco has adopted several strategies that help the organization to maintain a green supply chain. According to research, the concept of green HRM has become extremely popular in every business organization, since the HRM department may play an imperative role in adapting green initiatives (Khan et al., 2020). Tesco, being a global organization, operates in many countries, which indicates that the company is bound to run into some unfavourable political situation as well and along with that few legal issues too. Lastly, the company needs to maintain ethical practices while conducting business operations, as avoiding ethical code of conduct may push an organization out of business.
Analysis of the situation
It may be stated that from the above discussion, a brief idea about all the social, economic, technological, political, legal and environmental aspects of Tesco have been gathered. It needs to be discussed in which way the company may overcome any unforeseen situation, related to aspects with the help of HRM and also find potential solutions for the causes. In order to sustain a business, an organization needs to keep a healthy social relationship with its consumers and carry out business operations according to consumer’s preferences. Thus, the leaders of Tesco may seek guidance from the HRM for that, as being unable to provide customer satisfaction may leave a negative impact on the brand’s reputation. The technological advancement of technology, or more specifically, Information Technology (IT) has proven to provide a significant number of benefits to organizations, both in offline marketing and e-commerce marketing fields as well (Sanaei and Sobhani, 2018). Failing to implement proper technological advancements in the stores may cause some inconvenience for the consumers and therefore, the individuals may move to another business which may cause Tesco to lose its consumer base. The leaders of Tesco with the help of HRM need to recruit skilful employees, as without a proper workforce an organization is unable to sustain in the market.
In addition to that, failing to adopt a green initiative may raise questions about the company’s business practices, resulting in consumers avoiding the supermarket and that may cause the organization to face severe loss. Tesco, as previously mentioned, operates in many nations and thus, may run into political hazardous situations, as every country has some political and legal rules and regulations. In a similar situation, it is imperative for the leaders to take help and guidance from HRM, since oftentimes HRM helps an organization with its legal issues. Lastly, the company needs to seek guidance from the HRM department to conduct business operations in the most ethical way possible, as unethical business practices have a huge impact on an organization’s reputation and negatively affect business growth as well. Research suggests that human beings have a perception that organizations are responsible for causing more harm in case the company carries out unethical practices in comparison to an individual (Zhang, 2020).
Potential solutions
It may be stated that the given graph suggests that the annual revenue of Tesco in the year 2021 has dropped as a result of the Covid-19 situation. This indicates that the HRM and leaders of the organization need to work together to find a solution to this situation and implement proper strategies that may help Tesco to generate profits as before.
