To improve the leadership skill I need to make a development plan, which will help me to make progress. The development of the leadership qualities will help me to achieve success in the future. These qualities will help me to increase my communication, management skills. In this reflexive study, I am going to discuss my development plan of the leadership skills by applying leadership theories and models. It is important for me to work on my weaknesses to improve my skills. The effective development plan will help me to know about my strengths, weaknesses and help me to find out the areas where improvement is necessary. By evaluating several leadership models, I am able to know the areas where improvement is needed. The effective leadership models help me to develop various skills regarding leadership. The journey of being a dynamic leader will help to become individuals that are more competent. The development of the characteristics of dynamic leaders will increase my chance to achieve success also give me courage to face new challenges.
Model of development
For making an effective development of the leadership skills, I must adopt an effective leadership model. The leadership model will help to develop the leadership skills within me. It also helps me to evaluate my strengths, my weaknesses and help me to work on my weaknesses.
GROW model
The GROW model is one of the effective leadership models which help me to develop the leadership skills. As a leader, it is my responsibility to inspire the team members by making effective decisions for the team, by communicating with the team members (Cullen-Lester, Maupin & Carter, 2017). The GROW model is an effective four steps model which is stand for, Goal, Reality, options and Will. This model helps me to plan the leadership journey. According to the GROW model at first I need to set the goals. Then I need to examine the current situation. The next step is exploring the options and then final step is to establish the will.
Establishing the goals: the first step of the GROW model is to establishing the goals. In this stage I need to focus on the areas where improvement is needed. The behaviors and personality of a leader has a great impact on the team members. Thus, I must need to change my behavior as the team members follow the behaviors and personality of the leaders. The positive approach of the leader will help to create a better work place for the team members and the leader will able to inspire the team members with the positive attitude (Daniëls, Hondeghem & Dochy, 2019).
Examining the present situation: in the next step of the GROW model is to examine the present situation. Many time leaders try to reach the goal without evaluating the current situation and thus, they are tend to miss the goal. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the situation before taking any decision. It increases the confident of the leaders and increases efficiency in the work (Foti et al., 2017). To develop the leadership skill I must have the ability to evaluate the present situation to mitigate any issues in future.
Exploring the options: the third step of the GROW model is to explore the options which are available and help to reach the goals. A good leader always performs with the entire team and tries to bring out the creative ideas within them. Thus, after evaluating the present situation now it is time for explore the possibilities, which lead to the aims. In this step, the leaders can seek suggestions from the team members to what step they must attain to reach the goal. Besides it, they must explore what changes is needed to improve their skills and what they need to stop doing to reach the goal (Kiersch & Peters, 2017). The obstacles will also need to evaluate for the smooth performance. These are the options the options a leader need to explore for increasing the work efficiency with the team.
Establishing the will: the final step of the GROW model is to establish the will. After evaluating the current situation and exploring the options that lead to the aims the leaders now need to establish the will that is actions. This step is the final step, which leads to the goals. In this step the leaders need to commit an effective action to move forward in the work. By committing an effective action the leader can boost up the team members and can motivate them (Kiessling et al., 2021). Being a team leader I must follow the steps to increase my efficiency for the better performance.
The above picture of GROW model clearly shows the four steps which help to develop the leadership skills. For making an effective development plan, this model is very useful. By implementing this model, I make the plan for developing the leadership skills. This model helps to increase the confidence within me to establish a goal for me, examine the present situation and then make an effective decision. It also helps to explore the options, which are available to meet the goals. This model builds confidence to commit effective actions, which lead to the results.
This model for making an effective development plan has influenced me. An effective leadership development plan will help to mitigate any issues that may rise in future. In my journey to make an effective leadership plan I have learned many things and gained knowledge about the leadership styles. The appropriate leadership styles will help me to influence the team members and allow me to take decisions for the team to achieve the desired goals. Throughout the journey of making a leadership plan, I have been able to develop behaviors of the leaders by various leadership styles. The GROW model helps to build the decision-making skill, and problem solving skill within me.
