Introduction and Context
Overview of healthcare system
HCA healthcare is an American non-profit organization which is working for offering the healthcare facilities to the patients. HCA stands for the Hospital Corporation of America and the company is working effectively for enhancing the living standards and standard of care in an appropriate manner (Englebright, 2018). The company is offering the facilities in United States and United Kingdom. The HCA is a largest private healthcare provider in the world and is the largest privately owned or funded healthcare in UK. The organisation is working effectively for keeping their patients first and offering them the best possible care (HCA Healthcare UK., 2021). They are offering the clinical care, day case treatment, complex and urgent care services, and the primary care services to their patients. The healthcare organisations focus on having highly skilled and expert professionals which allows them in offering high quality care to their patients in an appropriate manner.
The core principle of HCA is to treat all the patients with compassion and kindness. The organisation is managing the employees in an appropriate manner by trusting them and considering them as a valuable member of the healthcare system. The organisation also focuses on treating all the employees with honesty, dignity, respect and fairness (Che et. al. 2017). The company is having a single mission to commit to the care of all and improve the human life. According to the report mentioned by HCA healthcare today the company had patterned with NHS which is one of the important healthcare service providers of UK during the pandemic. At the time of global crisis, it had become very important for ensure that better care is being offered to all the patients for this the company is supporting NHS (Egress, 2021). Several private healthcare service providers had worked with NHS for making all the resources available which can help them in offering better care to the patients during the pandemic and in this way, HCA has contributed a lot to the UK healthcare system. This had helped NHS in having the access to 8000 more hospital beds, 8000 clinical staff, 700 doctors, 10000 nurses and 1200 ventilators which was a greater help for NHS (Connors et. al. 2021).
Managing such a large organisation is not an easy task. HCA has faced a lot of issues in the past for managing the employees and patients in an appropriate manner. Taking care of the sensitive information of the patients is an important task for the businesses. The company is having the information security system but then also they are facing the issues in maintaining the confidentiality and privacy of the employees due to the complex nature of the system which makes it difficult for the employees to make use of it (Deciccio, 2021). The concern for the privacy is increasing and due to this reason, it is important for the company to use the resources in this area in an appropriate manner which can help them in addressing this issue.
Critical evaluation of strengths and weakness of resource planning and management in different areas
Management of the healthcare system is an complex process which need better management for addressing the issues. There are different types of strength and weaknesses associated with the factors on which the company is focusing for offering better care to their patients.
Priority setting and decision-making processes
Making decisions for the betterment of the patient is very important. The organisation focuses on the shared decision making which is very important for making effective decisions related to the care required to be offered to the patients. Using the technologies is the major focus on HCA. For making the decision making more efficient the organisation is using the technologies which are a major advantage for the company. According to Griffith, (2021) HCA had partnered with Google cloud for making or creating a new clinical decision-making platform. This is very effective as it is helping the company in data analytics which is important for managing the data and getting better information through it (Griffith., 2021). The company believe that the algorithm-based decision support tool would be helping them in improving the care quality offered by the company. Thus, it can be said that the decision making is effective at HCA healthcare.
Workplace planning and development
HCA has is considered for their development. For this they are investing huge amount of capital in their technologies which can help them in improving the quality of care offered by them (HCA Career., 2021). Along with this they are working on offering better training to their employees of the development of the skills and knowledge. This shows that they are much concerned for the development of the organisation. Along with this they are working on different areas of improvement for offering the best care to their patients and this is one of the important strengths of the organisation which is helping them in maintaining their position.
Human resource and talent management
Workplace planning and development is very important for the healthcare service providers. The case organisation focuses on having highly experienced and expert professional as the education and the process factors are having a major role to play in the quality of the healthcare (Hernandez, 2019). Along with this it is also having an influence on the way the company manages the healthcare workforce. It can be said that this factor is an important strength of the company which is helping them in having better employees. For ensuring the success in leadership roles the company is offering career training program to their professionals which is helping them in having better healthcare leaders (HCA Healthcare UK. 2021). Some of the issues related to the management such as lack of proper use of the digital tools during the pandemic and many more can be considered as the weakness for the company in the context of workforce management. But it can be said that for talent management the organisation is working effectively to make use of better strategy for hiring and managing the talented employees in an appropriate manner (Jones et. al. 2016).
Recommendations for Improvement
The case company can work on offering training to their employees related to the use of the digital technologies and using the new cloud-based decision making for making more effective decisions (Jatic et. al. 2019). Recently the company had partnered with the Google cloud for managing the decision making in more appropriate manner. During the pandemic the pressure on the healthcare professionals had increased to a greater extent and this is creating major issue for the case company and all the other healthcare service providers in making the decisions (Pifer., 2021). In this context it can be recommended that offering better training for using the technologies in decision making would be effective. Handling the sensitive information is also a challenge for the company and beside of having the information security system the company is facing issues.
For addressing this is can be recommended that the company need to focus on working on offering better training and using an simple software which is more easy to use for the employees (Bielicki et. al. 2020). The software solution can help the organisation in maintaining the confidentiality of the data when it has been discussed among the different teams and the healthcare professionals for the company. On the basis of the analysis, it can be suggested that there are two important areas of improvement on which the company work which is offering training to the employees to improve their ability to use the latest technologies and the Google cloud-based platform for decision making and the another one is to make use of software solution for making the information sharing more confidential (Matheny et. al. 2019).
While making the recommendation it is very important to evaluate the risk and benefits associated with the use of the recommendation. If the recommendations are having better potential to offer better benefits to the organisation, then only it would help them in making investment (Nyashanu et. al. 2020). For the above-mentioned recommendation cost, benefit and risks are discussed below in an appropriate manner.
Cost
Using the software for ensuring better confidentiality and managing the organisation in an appropriate manner the company need to invest better capital. The cost of purchasing the software for managing the information sharing and management tool would be around $30000. Although this is higher but it is having better ability to offer several benefits to the organisation. On the other hand, the other important recommendations related to the offering training and development would cost the organisation around $10000.
Benefits
Offering training to the employee is very important. The use of digital tools and technologies is increasing in the area of healthcare (Scott et. al. 2021). Due to this reason, it had become very important for the healthcare organisations to offer better training and development to their employees which can help them in improving their digital skills. Training would help the company in improving the skills of the employees which is very important during the pandemic (Parremore, 2019). The company is investing better capital for using the Google cloud-based decision making. For using this in an appropriate manner it is very important for the firm to invest on training and development. It can be said that this would help the organisation in ensuring that they are offering better care to their employees and making better use of the resources (Spinelli et. al. 2019). Making appropriate use of the company resources is very important. Thus, it can be said that the company need to invest in the training and development of the employees for enhancing their digital skills.
HCA is already using the information systems but the employees are not making use of it due to its complex nature (Fertleman et. al. 2018). In this situation the report suggests that the organisation should use a management software which can help in better communication and confidential communication and information sharing among the healthcare professionals (Businesswire, 2019). This would be very helpful for the organisation as it would allow them in making better use of the information system and managing the employees in an appropriate and digital manner. During the pandemic it has become very important to manage the digital teams in an appropriate manner. At this time the software would be helping the company in managing the workforce in an appropriate manner and improving their performance. Along with this it would foster better cooperation and collaboration among the team members which is important for better mental health of employees during the pandemic (Santacroce et. al. 2020).
Risks
Understanding the different types of risks, related to recommendation is important for managing them in an appropriate manner. Although the recommendation made to the company would be helping them in number of ways and in all the three areas discussed above. But the below mentioned table would represent the important risks which can be faced by the organisation.
Colour | Inference of colour | Risk | Efficacy of suitable strategy | Mitigation Action |
High | Financial risk
|
If the organisation is not taking care of the implementation of the strategies, then it would create a financial risk if the company does not receive the expected outcomes. | The organisation needs to make sure that the plan is implemented in an appropriate manner. | |
Moderate | Lack of information related to the software | If the employees are not having better information related to the use of software, then the company would not be able to use the cloud-based decision-making platform and the management software in an appropriate manner. | For this the company need to make sure that training and development need to be very effective. |
Evaluation
Using the software for the management of the healthcare professionals and ensuring their confidentiality during the pandemic is the effective alternative on which the company can focus. This would help them in making their empowerment technologically advanced and will also help them in using the cloud-based technique in the decision making on which the company is investing better capital. It can be said that this is important for the organisation to take care that they are making optimal use of the new software which would be used by the company (Jansen et. al. 2018). Along with this the company need to take care of the training and development also as it would help them in improving the skills of the employees which is very important for making better use of the technologies on which the company is investing (Marques et. al. 2021). It can be said that the above-mentioned recommendation would be helping the company in making effective use of their resources in an appropriate manner.
Conclusion
The above-mentioned report had focuses on critically evaluating that how the company is using their resources for which HCA is being considered as the case organisation. HCA is working on the different important areas and making better use of the technology but then also facing the issues (Hinsliff-Smith et. al. 2020). Both the advantages and disadvantages are associated with the company strategies. Some of the common issues related to the optimal use of better technologies. Along with this the company is investing in technology but the team is not prepared with the digital skills to use the technologies in an appropriate manner. In this context it has become very important for the case company to work on improvement (Dawson, 2021). The suggested recommendations can offer different benefits to the company and the HCA should work on them in an appropriate manner. Using the management software would help in ensuring that the healthcare professionals are communicating effectively with each other and offering better care to the patients.
