1. Introduction
The current report is going to be on the discussion of project management of Taunton warehouse. Taunton warehouse is the new operational area of Supermarket X for their storage. This new warehouse is going to open for better operational management of supermarket X. This report is going to describe the project life cycle theory of managing a project. In this report, the project of Taunton warehouse will be described using PMBOK methodology for project management. Their key knowledge areas such as scopes, schedules and they will be highlighted here. Cost, quality, resources and many others are going to be described through PMBOK methodology. Furthermore, few recommendations will be provided for the betterment of this project.
2. Main Body
2.1 Theory of project life cycle
The project life cycle theory states that there are five phases in a project and all the stakeholders of a project share a common goal between them. Every project has a starting, middle and closing stage and these stages are part of the project life cycle. The responsibilities of these stages are divided among the stakeholders (de Freitas et al. 2019). Besides, every step has its own objectives, schedule and risk factors. All the stakeholders need to understand their role in the project to complete this life cycle with success. The stages of project life cycle are addressed below:
- Initiation
This is the first stage of the project life cycle and in this stage the main aim of the project is decided. The project is started in this stage and at this stage, project sponsor or project owner is the cardinal stakeholder. The expected output of the project is decided by the project sponsor. They choose the most significant stakeholders for the project and give them major responsibilities for further operation of the project (Wolff, 2018). In most of the cases, the project sponsor chose the project manager and shared the aim of the project. Project managers become the main project head of the project for the further stages.
- Planning
The planning stage of the project is one of the most significant phases as in this stage all the aspects of a project is outlined. The main tasks of this stage is mentioned below and based on it, Taunton warehouse project will be executed:
- Define the objectives of the project and make work structure for completion of the project.
- Required resources such as raw materials, technical equipment and many more are planned.
- Estimated budget plan is made and project manager reports the plan to the project sponsor for approval (Villamil, Pinilla and Martin, 2019).
- Time schedule is made to achieve all the objectives of the project.
- Stakeholders such as the project team, supervisors, contractors, laborers and many others are recruited for the project.
- Risk register is made to outline the risk possibility and risk severity. Project team is responsible for constructing risk management plans to avoid the risk factors.
- Quality standard of the project is defined and all the members of the project management team are allocated with responsibilities from individual segments of the project (Kaczorek, Krzemiński and Ibadov, 2017).
III. Execution
The execution stage of the project is defined as the most essential stage as in this step all the planned tasks to achieve the project objectives are executed. Ground level stakeholders are the most important element of this phase as most of the works are done by them. In this stage works of different segments of the project runs simultaneously (Steenkamp and Bekker, 2018). Project supervisors and the project manager are responsible to establish effective communication with all the other stakeholders of the project in a regular interval. Time schedule up gradation and financial projection is necessary in this phase.
- Monitoring and control
Checklists are made for this stage and all the activities defined in the checklist are verified for quality. Quality management is essential and stakeholders are responsible to present their part of the project to QRQC (Quality Response Quality Control) team (Banica et al. 2018). The risk register of the project is verified and future risks are estimated. All the project deliverables remain under observation to watch the performance. Project sponsors verify all the project deliverables with the defined aim of the project. Any further improvement is decided by the project manager, project sponsor or the QRQC team. This step closes when all the project objectives are met with the required quality.
- Closure
This is the final stage of the project and project sponsor and project manager share the major responsibilities in this stage. Final budget is made and presented to the project sponsors (Duda, Puka and Puka, 2019). All the due payments are cleared in this step by the project manager. Opening ceremony is organized and the project is declared as closed.
2.2 PMBOK methodology for project management
PMBOK is published and controlled by the Project Management Institute. It defines the knowledge areas associated with project management. Administration of this project methodology is undertaken by Institute of Project Management. In the words of Banica et al. (2018), it is assessed as knowledge based approach since this methodology describes several project management practices and knowledge management techniques which are beneficial for achieving project aims. It has a robust framework for procurement management, project integration management, defining scope, resource management and many more. In this methodology project manager is defined as the main controller of the project and it focuses on its roles.
Process Groups
In a project management, process groups intends to logical representation of grouping concerning processes of project management that helps in attaining specific objectives of project. In this regard, project phase constitutes collection regarding logically project that culminates completion of project deliverables in significant means (Pereira et al. 2018). There are five different process groups available in every project that intends to define process groups and they are described below in aligning with Taunton Warehouse project:
Initiating
Integration of PMBOK in Taunton Warehouse would consider initiating process groups to maintain good quality, manage risk procurement and much more. Role of key stakeholders are going to play essential aspects to compliance Taunton Warehouse based on PMBOK methodology (Villamil, Pinilla and Martin, 2019). This stage would execute planning for Taunton Warehouse to process where delivery as well as trucking vehicles will be produces via Supermarket X. In addition, all equipment of manual handling and transport fixtures will be entailed based on it and long term approaches will be provided for several purposes. Operation of warehouse and transport will be assessed to continue further processes within this stage, such as routing and scheduling.
Planning
Execution of project integration and resources will be undertaken in Taunton Warehouse based on PMBOK. As cited by Wiboonrat (2018), administration, operating of project functions in this stage with the help of PMBOK in any project. Similarly, in relation to Taunton Warehouse, administrative functions of back office and operation of warehouse will be generated to undergo recruitment, training regarding warehouse operatives and much more. In addition, operation of site transport would be included in this process group to handle each unit of vehicle maintenance (Burmistrov, Siniavina and Iliashenko, 2018). Planning of new site representation would be considered in this stage as well to link with infrastructure policy of Supermarket X. One such exemplary include new site operations in Chipping Sodbury, Worcester, Bristol, Cirencester and Yeovil, respectively.
Executing
Carrying out Taunton Warehouse will then be organized in executing process and this will be largest stage where project management planning will be maintained to provide accepted deliverables. Based on cost management and budgeting of Taunton Warehouse. According to Burmistrov, Siniavina and Iliashenko (2018), required resources will be investigated with respect to sufficient time. Key deliverables, such as scope statement, organization chart, communication plan will be delivered to simulate effective outcomes of Taunton Warehouse. In addition, quality plan, risk register and structure of work breakdown of this project team will be provided to get success.
Monitoring and Controlling
Communication plan will be prepared with help of PMBOK to monitor and control Taunton Warehouse significantly. Utilization of escalation report will be designed to collect feedbacks from customers based on it. Areas of focus in this monitoring will be on two aspects and they are recruitment and site closure, respectively. Closing

Migration of food, opening unit of vehicle maintenance will be integrated to reach completion of this project. Hence, this process will be responsible to ensure all requirements of the project to gain completion successfully. Knowledge area would identify project management requirements in regards to Taunton Warehouse to describe component processes, inputs, tools along with techniques (Burmistrov, Siniavina and Iliashenko, 2018). Project manager would execute nearly 49 processes with help of team group to attain each objective of Taunton Warehouse. Ten significant areas will be prioritized via PMBOK to input knowledge areas in Taunton Warehouse. They are as follows:
Management of project integration: This defines process that ensures several elements of project to coordinate in a proper way. As stated by Banica et al. Resources management: Estimation of activity resources will be incorporated by acquiring resources, such as budget. Stakeholder management: After recognition of stakeholders, engagement of stakeholder will be activated to discuss facts about Taunton Warehouse. Supermarket X will be project sponsor in this regard to compliance and deliver efficient outcomes on this process. 3. Conclusion
It can be concluded from the above analysis that overall report has been leaned towards investigating Taunton Warehouse details based on utilization of project methodology. PMBOK is used as project methodology in this report and it is well evaluated in context of Taunton Warehouse to carry out the good results. Each stage of this project methodology has been detailed starting from initiation up to project closure. Besides this, linking of PMBOK has been applied to highlight its importance and advantage in this particular project. Knowledge areas, processes groups have been implied here as well to assess PMBOK in an efficient manner. Moreover, few recommendations have been suggested to improve project life cycle of Taunton Warehouse through PMBOK.
4. Recommendations
1. Improvement of project awareness & visibility: Sponsor and project manager of Taunton Warehouse must be influenced with such views to trigger strategy of project management. Execution of this project is needed to be handled properly such that guidelines for awareness must be maintained to mitigate further issues in project. Changes in project scheduling can therefore, be managed (Banica et al. 2017). Hence, better communication plan can be included to consider new roles in new sites of Taunton. |
2. Customization of approach: Stakeholders of Taunton must be reviewed to control such recommendation plan and attain progress thereafter. Integration of task board regarding better project methodology can be incorporated in this step, such as Scrum or Agile such that time constraints can be monitored in Taunton to certain extent (Fathi, Ammari and Allal, 2019). Hence, essential lessons can be learned based on Taunton, thereby implicating productive values in return. |
3. Monitoring budget and scheduling: Careful project planning must be simulated to control further requirements in Taunton. This approach will be concerned to spot immediate changes that are going to take place due to PMBOK in Taunton. Specific changes will then be enlisted to enforce skills of project management. In this way (Kononenko and Lutsenko, 2018). Completion of Taunton Warehouse’ objectives can be addressed without facing more risks or constraints in it. Thus, it is expected that after following such recommendations, Taunton Warehouse will be able to eliminate risks in its project through adoption of PMBOK. |
