IDENTIFICATION AND UTILITIES OF THE INFORMATION SYSTEM IN THE REALM OF NETWORK, COMMUNICATION AND DATA MANAGEMENT

Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Introduction

Information system is a set of systems integrated together for storing, processing and retrieving data and for giving information, relevant knowledge and digital products. Business firms across the world depend on information systems to conduct and manage business operations, and communicate with potential customers and suppliers which allows them to effectively compete in the market. Companies use information systems for data management which helps to steer business growth. Internet infrastructure supports connectivity and provides faster data delivery. It improves computing performance and software applications are integrated with the network thereby enabling users to easily get access to them.

1.2 Research background

Computer networks can be defined by the protocols it applies for the purpose of communication, the ways it controls traffic and physical arrangement of components. There are different utilities of information systems in the area of network, communication and management of data. Companies get highly benefited by integrating information systems with their business operations (Hämäläinen and Inkinen, 2019). Several firms are developed completely around information systems. Governments use information systems to effectively provide services in a cost-effective manner to citizens.  With time, the pervasiveness of the network will increase and it will become more integrated thereby helping people to make effective use of it.

Aim

The study aims to identify the usage of information systems in the domain of network, communication and management of data.

Objectives

  • To investigate the concept of information systems in different areas
  • To evaluate the importance of information systems in the areas of network, communication and management of data
  • To analyse the use of networking in management information system
  • To recommend strategies for improving data management and communication in network system

1.4 Research rationale

The issue is that ineffective or lack of proper information systems results in improper communication. It is not possible to manage data or the networking systems effectively without appropriate information systems. It is an issue because it makes firms, governments, education sectors and other users go through various kinds of problems such as communication gaps, management issues and so on. Now, it is an issue because every sector is facing immense pressure in terms of competition and is trying hard to sustain its existence in the market which is not possible in case of a lack of effective information systems (Birkel et al. 2019). Hence, the application information systems will be analysed to assess their importance.

1.5 Research Significance

This research is primarily focused on information systems within the network and the way it influences communication and data management. In addition, it helps to identify the requirement of information technology to manage the overall data and network system in an effective manner. The study will also evaluate the effectiveness of using information technology within an organisation to revamp the overall operation of a business successfully by managing the communication and management system of the company. The chosen topic will help future research scholars to gain enough knowledge regarding the information system and its diverse utilities in different areas.

Chapter 2: Literature Review

2.1 Concepts of information system

User interface (UI) is the most important component of information systems. Chang et al. (2020) opined that users can perform their tasks with complete efficacy with the help of user-friendly UI. Some basic principles are associated with the UI design of the information system. User control, proper design of the interface, information feedback, fast system response, tolerance of fault and security and modification of interface are some of the basic principles for the designing of user interface of information systems. Tam et al. (2019) argued that users can become highly engaged with applications due to the existence of convenient interfaces. Quality of UI can be related to the input and output of computer, the user’s operation including information system’s overall performance. Hence, the user interface should be designed efficiently to provide users with the maximum satisfaction of using information systems.

2.2 Application of information systems in business firms

Information systems (IS) have the capability to transform business processes in a positive manner thereby leading the firms towards achieving success and gaining competitive advantages in the market where they operate. Eroshkin et al. (2017) stated that information systems support business operation systems which include transaction processing, process control systems, collaboration systems of enterprise, different management support systems and so on. Moreover, an effective information system helps in the appropriate decision-making and possesses the capability of controlling the entire organisation. IS combines people, different hardware and software, networks of communication, and data resources. Information systems are applications of different information technologies on which the business professionals depend for accomplishing organisational goals. As per the opinion of Abubakar et al. (2019), effective decision-making is responsible for the success of any business and IS helps in doing so thereby making the process easier for managers and other employees. IS facilitates communication through which any uncertainties of companies can be effectively dealt with.

2.3 Importance of information systems in network and data management

Data management is an essential task, particularly in the context of business management. Business forms contain lots of valuable and sensitive data and companies can face major economic loss in case of data breach. Hence, it is the responsibility of IT professionals and company managers to consider the issue of data management seriously which can be done by making proper use of information systems. According to Chaudhary et al. (2017), data management protects data from breaches and provides protection with authentication along with encryption tools. Strong data security helps in backing up information and can be retrievable in case of the unavailability of primary data. Stair and Reynolds (2020) commented that a sophisticated and advanced information system stores information within the database which makes the finding process of data easy and simple. Various applications are developed through IS which provide proper support to managers with adequate data which helps in formulating and implementing decisions. This helps in enhancing managerial effectiveness. Network supports IS and various applications and the appropriate network helps in exchanging information between two devices.

2.4 Challenges of the security aspects of information system

There are different benefits of the application of information systems in the domains of network, communication and data management. However, several challenges are faced in this context as well which threaten the growth of business. As per the opinion of O’Kane et al. (2019), malware infects devices, important files and systems thereby making it impossible for users to further use them. It leads to data breaches in organisations that require proper device management and updated security measures. Some companies before sending data often do not encrypt data which leads to serious cloud threats. This has made it mandatory for users working in different sectors to opt for private clouds that have the potential to secure and encrypt data consistently.

2.5 Theoretical overview

(Source: Minh and Thanh, 2022)

“Data Management Maturity Model” (DMMM) focuses on providing guidelines that help companies to develop, improve and measure the data management capabilities of enterprises. This framework is widely used in companies to conduct data management practices. The model improves the process and capabilities of companies and is considered a maturity framework (Minh and Thanh, 2022). This framework helps in managing datasets of firms and their corresponding activities and hence, it is evident that companies are making effective use of information systems in different forms.

2.6 Conceptual Framework

2.7 Literature gap

Various utilities of IS are provided in the literature review section and it also covers different essential aspects related to the concept. However, some limitations are identified in this context which creates a significant gap in this literature. This research failed to provide an adequate number of models and theories related to information system management and demonstrating data management and communication in the information system.

Chapter 3: Research methodology

3.1 Research philosophy

Interpretivism philosophy will be used to conduct this study. This philosophy depends on performing research work by observing the social world (Žukauskas et al. 2018). The exact meaning of the present study will be evaluated with this research philosophy and multiple methods will be applied to analyse the issues of the given topic from various perspectives.

3.2 Research approach
