Introduction
Prejudice can be defined as an affective feeling of a person towards a particular person or group (Kite, & Whitley Jr, 2016). Prejudice can be referred as preconceive and unfavorable feelings towards the person or group on the basis of their ability, aptitude, disability, race, age, culture, ethinicity, gender, language, marital status, nationality, personality, race, religion, sexuality, etc. It is a nature of discrimination which is form by an individual without having any evidence.
In this context, this report supports to identify that how I acquire these prejudices and the actions that I need to take to avoid these prejudices. So, this report remained highly assistive to condict my self-evaluation while assisting me to improve in the context of avoiding the prejudices. This report is based on secondary data analysis and I have referenced various past findings to get the knowledge regarding prejudice from various point of view. It has also supported to increase the relevancy of the report and has allowed me to conclude the overall findings in the right direction.
Prejudices
In our daily life, we develop various prejudices. This prejudices develop in our mind due to stereotyping. In the views of Jahoda (2015), preejudice can be referred as unfounded beliefs, which include unreasonable attitude and show unusual resistant towards rational influence. So, I have also developed few prejudices. The major prejudices developed by me are related to gender, age and culture. In the context of my self evaluation, I analysed that in the context of gender, I have a prejudice that female employees are not as good in analytical skills as compared to male. I have astrong belief that females are good at household tasks and they are good at art work but they have less analytical skills. On the other hand, in the context of age, I have a prejudice that young people are more capable as compared to old people in the context of accepting change. At the same time, in the context of culture, I have a prejuudice that all Arabs and muslims are terrorists.
Acquire the Prejudices
According to the views of Amodio (2014), human being is a social animal and society gives huge impact on him to develop his personality. A person learns and develops his personality on the basis of his society. I think I have also developed the prejudices on the basis of societal influence. However, there are some prejudices which have developed in me due to my self analysis.
So, in this context, I think that the people around me is the major reason behind developing all these prejudices. In the context of gender as my mother is housewife and my father is the only earner. Moreover, I have seen that at my home all the major decsions are taken by my father. My mother only takes small decisions however the big decisions where analytical skills required are taken by father. Not only at my home but also in the society in which I live I mostly seen this situation. I have seen this situation in those families also where man and woman both are earning personalities. On the other hand, I also have prejudice that men are messy and untidy and they give less care towards hygienicness as compared to women (Fishbein, 2014). I think, I developed this prejudice from my home as I always found that my father and uncles are never put the things at their right place whereas my mother and aunts are always there to put the things at there appropriate place.
So, I think due to this reason, I developed a prejudice that male employees has more analytical skills as compared to female employees. I have a prejudice that young people are more capable in accepting change as compared to old people. This prejudice is developed in me as I found that most of the young people are energetic and active (Christ, et al., 2014). They always show eagerness and readiness towards accpeting the change. In my house also I found that my grandparents show reluctant behaviour towards change and prefers only those atmosphere about which they are aware. For instance, my grandmother does not prefer to go outside the home in the night. This is her perception that she will become ill if she will go out in the evening. So, it is her perception and she does not want to go beyond it. Moreover, from the government norms, I come to know after a particular age, organization gives retirement to the people so there is a reason that old people are not remain capable to get set with the challenging situation and not become able to accept the change (Hughes, et al., 2016).
In the context of culture, I have a prejuudice that all Arabs and muslims are terrorists. This prejudice has developed in me due to lots of news which I read rearding the terrorist attack, I found in some or other ways Arabs or muslims are involved in it. At the same time, I also found lots of people discussing about it that the Arabs and muslims have a personality of terrorists (Chambers, et al., 2013). Additionally, due to their dressing appearance and beard and found them as a suspicious personability. So, due to this reasons, I think I developed this perception. I think my this prejudice become stronger when I heard about the Kashmir attacks from the Muslims. In like manner, when I studied that in September 11, out of 19 hijackers, 15 were Saudi Arabian and all of them were of Muslim faith, my believe of my prejudice has increased.
Actions needed to Avoid Prejudices
In the views of Vezzali, et al. (2015), prejudice takes place due to an opinion of a person which majorly do not include the reality or evaluation of the situation. At the same time, Guimond, et al. (2013) determined that prejudice is an affective feeling of a person towards aparticular person or group which takes place due to personal perception and usually create unfavorable feelings towards others.
So, according to me, to avoiding prejudices I need to evaluate the situation before developing any presumption in my mind. Moreover, I need to understand that an attitude of a single person does not become able to define a particular community (Kalmoe, & Gross, 2016). There is a need of taking each and every indivial as a different personality which cannot be defined on the basis of any kind of prejudice. In support of this, from the report of the European Commission’s Advisory Committee I come to understand that if equal opportunities given to the women as well as men then they show equal analytical thinking level. Moreover, in the views of Pescosolido, et al. (2013), women show the attitude of more analytical thinker as compared to male personalities. Moreover, they have a quality of multi-tasking. There are lots of men who do not become able to take decisions by their own and similarly there are lots of women who are plays the role of head personality in their house and are responsible for taking all the major decisions.
From this, it is analysed that different persons who have different views and perceptions regarding a person or a group so it is difficult to say that who have more skills. From this, I become able to understand that a particular person or group cannot be judged on the basis of prejudice. So, there is a need of eliminating the situation of prejudices while promoting the non-stereotyped behaviour for any group on the basis of an individual related to that group (Leslie, 2017).
At the same time, I felt that my prejudice is not right and I need to break it when once in a travel, I met a Muslim person. That muslim person was sitting next to me and actually I was feeling afraid of him as I have a prejudice in my mind that all Muslims and Arbas are terrorists. However, during my travel I found that he was a generous personality who has a helping nature for others as well as he was concerned about his family and takes a proper care of his belongings. At that point of time, I realized that all the Muslims are not at all terrorists. Although there are various terrorist attacks are conducted by Muslims but it does not reflect overall Muslim society (Lemmer, & Wagner, 2015).
In like manner, although my grandparents show reuctant towards change but my friend who lives in my neighbourhood, his grandfather is very much active and always show initiation towards doing something new. He is very active and has a jolly nature who always show eagerness to try something new even he shows readiness to take different risks (Rutland, & Killen, 2015). From this, it can be easily understood that the nature of a particular person not become able to reflect a group. In various cases, I found that the police do the special checking of Muslims and Arabs in the American airports. I thought that they have also prejudice rearding this parameter which makes me strong believer of my prejudice. However after meeting that Muslim in the travel my whole prejudice has changed.
Moreover, I need to give concern towards before developing a perception for a particular person I will judge the person on the basis of his own skills, ability, behaviour and attitude rather than analysing him on the basis of a particular group (Guimond, et al., 2013). Moreover, I will also take an action to do not any prejudice for any group of people as it is not a right behaviour to judge a person only the basis of few experiences without any proper evidence.
Above discussion has supported to open my eyes to avoid prejudices. I can take various actions to eliminate the situation of creating the prejudices. In this concern, I need to give concern that an individual should not be evaluated on the basis of the behaviour of other person as they belong to the same group. In the organization, there is a need of working with the diverse culture team and in the current globalized environment, the trend of diverse team is increasing. In that situation, developing prejudice for a particular group can create adverse situation in the success of a person (Leslie, 2017). Furthemore, as I want to become a successful HR manager, so it is essential for me to consider all the persons equally as HR manager needs to create coordination between the team members.
Conclusion
From the above report, it can be concluded that prejudice develops negative image in the mind of the person regarding a particular person or group which does not show adequate behaviour. From my personal analysis, I found that I have developed some prejudices. I think, these prejudices have taken place in me due to the culture, society and my own perception in which I upbring.
So, in the current scenario it is essential for me to eliminate the situation of creating prejudice as it can create adverse situation for me to become successful in the professional life. I need to give equal chance to all the personalities and to evaluate them on the basis of their own attitude, behaviour and skills, rather than judging them on the basis of any prejudice.
