The critical evaluation of economics factors and customer sentiment that impact the initiative will also be beneficial for identifying the demographic data and identify the factors that influence the decision making of the customer for Hotel having low carbon emission and effective sustainability practice.
The main body of the report
Sustainability initiatives in hotels
Hotels are accountable for one person’s global emissions (Abdou et al., 2020). This number is continuing to increase as the demand for hotels and hospitality is increasing. As a result, the implementation of sustainability initiatives in the hotel is extremely important for mitigating the negative impact on the society and environment. Beyond the importance of the hotel to reduce the impact on environmental sustainability measures also impose important strategies to attract new clients (Filimonau and Magklaropoulou, 2020). In addition to that the hotel and hospitality sector also is one of the major industries which has negatively affected the environment and is greatly responsible for environmental depletion.
As a result it is not only the responsibility of the luxury Hotels about the budget hotels also have equal rather greater responsibility to adopt the sustainable practices that promotes environmental protection and social or economic equity. Using renewable sources of energy can enable reduction of carbon emission (Prakash et al., 2023). The sustainability strategies within organisation include practices like replacing lamp or saving energy and water. Growing organic vegetables and encouraging maintenance of ecological boat can be effective cost saving sustainability practices. In addition to that companies can also invest on the implementation of water system technology or biodiversity conservation that can reduce the waste and hazardous material.
Technical improvements that can be implemented
Hotels using Property Management Systems have implemented changes by using the reporting tools that are available from popular management systems for benchmarking utility usage and providing a set point for adjusting the temperature (Kaur, 2021). As a result, the operational changes have improved in the budget hotels. Particularly it’s not achieved superior performance and environmental effectiveness within a short period of time. As a result easyHotel will continuously need to maintain the competitive advantage and attract a huge number of guests through sustainability and environmental protection practices. EasyHotel like any other Budget hotel also produces an excessive amount of weight. 289700 metric tons of waste in UK hotels is produced every year. For easyHotel to win the share of the market in the hotel and Hospitality business it is crucial to focus on business sustainability. The company is in the hotel and hospitality industry implementing environmental sustainability practices to respond to doing the right thing rather than to eliminate social challenges. In this aspect easyHotel can jointly work in the green screens that are introduced in various localities for reputational benefit as well as achieving the competitive advantage and the market. Collective work with other businesses will also contribute to sustainability as public good. However in the hotel and hospitality sector sustainability practices are not always directly related to effective productivity and financial performance (Tritto, 2020).
Energy Efficiency practices
Sustainability is a significant concern in the lifestyle of the consumer and business process. The concept of sustainability for the past 2 decades has been actively debated in scientific and social circles. Particularly the hospitality and tourism industry are important for the global economy and in this aspect sustainability eventually is becoming a significant strategic objective for hotels to consider social and environmental aspects in the strategic planning (Pereira et al., 2021). As a result easyHotel should promote green human resource management practice for encouraging active engagement of the employee in Environmental sustainability activities. Motivating the employees to actively participate in the activities can enhance the social and ecological skill which further can improve the Green Hotel environment and performance.
However, EasyHotel can put an efficient shower head. High-efficiency bathroom fixture also uses 20% less water which is considered to be an important method to save a significant amount of expense. Another significant practice that can be encouraged by EasyHotel is motivating travellers to take sustainability into their own hands with both water and energy conservation. Sustainable Sourcing needs to be treated as a holistic approach across every sector from Hotel restaurants to housekeeping and operations. However, the hotels should also encourage the guests to be involved in the process of sustainability by taking an active role and encouraging sustainable practices within the hotel and positively impacting the local environment by choosing local tour operators and locally investing in the production of goods.
Sustainable sourcing of ingredients
Embracing and understanding the initiative will not only help EasyHotel to save money by being more energy efficient but it will also create less waste and help the business to differentiate in the market from the competitor. As the hotel and hospitality sector is moving more towards conscious consumers EasyHotel also needs to adapt to this type of customer eventually by offering them the chance to travel more sustainably.
For example, the company can have guests for daily towel and bed linen changes which will help in reducing the water and energy necessary for laundry (Khatter et al., 2021). Cleaning the product and choosing immunity that is most environmentally friendly is also important for the sustainable impact of the Hotel.
Green innovation practices are important particularly for budget hotels to improve the sustainability practice through reduced environmental impact introduction of environmental management and commitment towards sustainability and environmental strategy into policy monetary or implementation can support local commitment and enhance the overall business performance. Scholars have also focused on development of main practice in restaurants concerning the promotion of Sustainable food system including purchasing directly from the farmers or self-produced food (Foris et al., 2020). Previous academics also have integrated the social and environmental sustainability practice. It has been discovered that hotels and hospitality sector companies implementing sustainability and environmental policy like waste management and water conservation as well as carbon dioxide emission reduction and Energy Efficiency incorporate sustainability practice by collaborating with local community or residences and support work force integration. By choosing curated and carefully the ingredients at the hotels and restaurants the companies can shift towards sustainable sourcing of ingredients which will also positively contribute to the local economy (Calisto et al., 2021).
Importance of Sustainable hospitality
Importance of Sustainable hospitality in the age marked with increasing concern of social responsibility and environmental conservation the concept of sustainability has significant impact on many industries (Floričić, 2020). One of the sectors undergoing significant transformation towards sustainable practices is the hospitality industry. Travel and accommodation are moving into the area of sustainability hospitality that are looking out for blending exceptional guest experience with societal and ecological well-being. Sustainability is necessary to protect the planet and the hospitality industry is emissive consumer of natural resources having a substantial impact on local community and environment (Modica et al., 2020). Promoting sustainable tourism to curb the climate change and conserve natural resources sustainability is the way which the hospitality businesses can make to create a big difference.
However the impact also comes with environmental cost as the industry is eventually growing it is increasing the ecological footprint which creates need to shift towards sustainable practice (Han, 2021). Tourism industry collectively contributes to the 5% of global Greenhouse gas emission and it is expected to increase by 130% by 2035. The sustainable hospitality sectors involve integrating the ecological friendly practice into every aspect of company operation. It integrates conserving water and energy Sourcing organic and local product and adapting responsible tourism practice. The industries by doing this can generate multitude of benefits including improve the brand reputation and operation cost as well as enhanced guest loyalty or positive impact on the overall environment.
Negative impact of hospitality and tourism industry
Unregulated tourism leads to overcrowding and cultural insensitivity as well as environmental degradation. Sustainable Tourism practice focuses on preserving the cultural and natural Heritage while at the same time ensuring local community getting benefit from the growth of the industry (Legrand et al., 2022). For switching to renewable sources of energy and enabling the consumer to make sustainable choice is like recycling there are significant ways in which the hospitality industry can incorporate sustainable initiative. Practices like renewable utilisation of energy and waste reduction strategy or positive hospitality practice can successfully contribute to use sustainable initiative.
Impact of Sustainable hospitality Alliance
The sustainable hospitality Alliance is collective effort by the managers and industry leaders for promoting the sustainability in the hospitality sector. The objective of the initiative includes promoting responsible consumption and reduces carbon emission or increasing the production through social inclusion (Lima Santos et al., 2020). The alliance collaborate with the members for developing initiative which address various sustainability challenge from ethical Sourcing of the product to carbon reduction target like supporting local artisan and independent producer or purchasing mass produced items to decrease the carbon footprint. The alliance closely works with non-government organisation and local community as well as government for ensuring the sustainability efforts to be impactful and holistic and align with the Global sustainability objective (dos Santos et al., 2020). In this aspect EasyHotel can incorporate sustainable Hotel design and construction and locally source the organic food options.
Challenges of implementing sustainable practice in the hotel and hospitality industry
Changes like sustainability in the hotel and hospitality sector are not immediate and it needs the external and internal stakeholder to shift the mind-set rather than introducing the policy like reducing plastic use (Achmad and Yulianah, 2022). Particularly for the budget hotels having limited resources and financial funding one of the significant barrier is cost and financial related boundary. It is because of the fact that implementing the sustainable practice requires a front investment which reduces the ability of business due to concern about revenue generation and profitability. Sometimes there are also resistance for change and lack of awareness among the managers about the importance of Sustainable practice. As a result educating the stakeholder about the benefit of Sustainable practice is essential to overcome the challenge.
Sustainable development goal and related policies
The United Nations enacted Paris agreement in 2015 with the objective of strengthening the ability of countries to adapt to the negative effect of Climate Change and facilitated financing flow consistently with the sustainable development (Pereira et al., 2021). Each government, according to the agreement, need to plan and determine as well as report on global warming mitigation strategies on regular basis. The United Nation sustainable development goal is the road map for sustainable and prosperous future. The 2030 agent for sustainable development endorsed the member states of United Nations as the action plan for achieving the sustainable development and it has 17 goals (Thommandru et al., 2023).
Each country is expected to design individual action plan for implementing the sustainable development objective and implemented sustainable development as the national policy making. The focal point of the country has been established to ensure that the implementation of 10 year framework program on sustainable consumption and production is coordinated. Similarly in March 2018 the European Union sustainable finance action plan which was held by the European Union Commission ensure that the commitment of the European Union to channel the private financial flow into the project will support the Paris agreement and United Nation sustainable development goal. The deal also contains green deal investment pillar and sustainable European Union investment plan (Heimerl et al., 2020). United States national environmental policy is a federal law which require the study of environment implication before Federal action can have major impact on the environment.
Results
The data collection of the report has been done from in-depth secondary data analysis. One of the most popular methods of a collecting data for qualitative study is conducting secondary method of Data Collection as it gives the researcher access to the insight and perception of the authors about the topic (Bell et al., 2022). Conducting in depth data in qualitative research needs to greater understanding that enable the researcher in deeper analysis of the issue. A secondary method of Data Collection has been considered in the current study where the researcher has collected the data from various secondary sources like online journal articles and books or newspapers and publications. The researcher first examined the secondary data and check on the authenticity and reliability of the sources. It facilitated the accessibility of the dependable information to study by utilising credible sources like newspaper and journal articles. The researcher also took into consideration the sources such as data that is accessible on the Internet or the content released by non-Government and government agencies. The outbreak of pandemic to certain extent has positively affected the sustainability through reduction in the motor vehicle and air flight traffic (Taylor and Bogdan, 1998).
By actively engaging into secondary method of Data Collection the researcher has been able to ensure that the assessment uses accurate data and facilitates the progress of the project. As a result, the pollution level and greenhouse gas emission are also reduced. However due to tremendous increase in the e-commerce there is also a growth on the carbon footprint. Sustainable practices of restaurants particularly during pandemic and practices like increasing the recycling or reducing food waste enabled achieving sustainability focusing on locality for quality and recruitment of knowledgeable and creative individuals.
In the following stage the discussion has been carried out where the views and opinion of authors and writers have been compared and contrast to achieve the overall Project objective. Variety of academic journal with focus on the appropriate approach has been conducted and the studies have been used to gather the data regarding green tourism. The sampling approach employed in the qualitative and secondary method of Data Collection involved selection and identification of the credible sources that align with the objective of the project (Saunders et al., 2019). The decision is made by considering the nature of the study which is why the secondary qualitative method of Data Collection has been used. A critical examination has been carried out in the discussion part where academic articles have been revealed to ensure comprehensive utilisation of different views and opinion of authors and writers and extensive search strategy has been conducted from official sources and industry journal or academic data base from commercial organisation.
When on the significant issue related to the use of secondary data in any project or research is lack of relevance and accuracy. Given that the use of secondary data analysis is designed to find the answers of different issues and fill the gap but use of secondary method of Data Collection might not always provide the exact type of data which is needed to support the decision. In addition to the at secondary data can be incomplete and have lack of accuracy depending on sampling design or source as well as the data analysis and collection technique that has been used by the author or writer in the study (Saunders et al., 2019). These issues for collecting the data from secondary sources have been eliminated in the current study by the researcher by considering ready to use data and the information which required further processing available on publicly available domain.
Company directed with business information and reports based on market researcher or other similar authentic sources have been used that provides information about the current industrial trend and future scope. Initially the researcher had spent long hours to research on online portals in search of external sources. However, these external sources held limited understanding and overview. As a result utilising secondary sources like journal articles and books or reports and videos have been considered by the researcher from which the data has been used and analysed as the sources provide summary of the data from particular prospective. The information generated from these sources also has provided the researcher with the indication of the type of data that has been used. In case of collecting the data from reports and books the researcher also has considered actual raw data that has been used to draw the conclusion on the value of the research objective.
Discussion
In the current age of increasing concerned among the guest for environmental conservation and corporate social responsibility the concept of green tourism and sustainability are having significant impact on hotel and Hospitality also. Accommodation and travel are moving into the area of Sustainable hospitality that is looking out for exceptional blend for the guest experience and ecological well-being (Jones et al., 2014). The hospitality industry considered range of business including event venue and resort or restaurants all of which offer services catering to travel and tourists. However, considering the business operation of EasyHotel it is found that the impact of environment and ecological degradation often comes with environmental cost as the industry overall is responsible for growth in the ecological footprint for which the company also needs to promote and shift towards sustainable practices. Sustainable hospital for EasyHotel can involve integrating eco-friendly practice in every operation.
It can include reduction of waste and conserving water or energy as well as Sourcing organic or local product and adopting responsible tourism practice (Kim et al., 2019). By doing this EasyHotel will be able to generate multitude of benefits like improving the brand reputation or reduce operation cost as well as enhance the loyalty among the guest. The hotel and hospitality sector overall is responsible for substantial amount of food wastage from consumption to production. Similarly EasyHotel can minimise the food waste carefully by planning the proportion and controlling portion as well as a conducting donation initiative. It is eventually now becoming common for budget hotels and restaurants to focus on seasonal and local produced vegetables that can also support the local producer and reduce the transportation of food. Unregulated tourism also leads to environmental degradation and overcrowding in a location or cultural in sensitivity. The Sustainable Tourism practice, focus on preserving cultural and natural heritage while ensuring local community benefit from the growth of the industry (Rosa and Silva, 2017).
From switching to enabling the customers to make sustainable choice to renewable sources of energy EasyHotel can incorporate the sustainable initiative. For this the budget hotel can use solar and geothermal energy to power the operation which will also reduce its dependence on fossil fuel. Similarly implementing the recycling program by the budget hotel can help the company to invest in waste to energy technology and composting that further can divert the waste from land field and minimise the impact on the environment.
Ideas like re-using cooking or conserving the water and laundry water to be used in the garden area can help EasyHotel to cut back on the use of water. In the first section of the project it has been found that positive hospitality practices in courage guests also to reuse the bed linen or towel and reduce depends on paper through digital communication and offering eco-friendly immunity (Cozzio, 2019). These small changes can be introduced in EasyHotel which collectively can make a significant impact. According to the findings in the literature review it can be found that guest nowadays are actively looking out for hotels where they are not contributing to environmental damage and EasyHotel with help of this small changes can improve guest experience and sustainability standards.
The concept of sustainability in recent years has gained significant traction across various Industries including the hotel and Hospitality business. As Travellers are becoming more conscious about the impact to the environment, hotels are also taking proactive measures for embracing the eco-friendly practice. The data collected and analysis conducted in the previous section explore the rise of Sustainable hospitality and highlights the ways in which Neha can implement innovative Strategies for minimising the carbon footprint providing the customer with a greener experience. Sustainable Hospital role in shaping the future of tourism and travel industry. According to EasyHotel with the environmental changes the significance of adopting sustainable practice in this sector cannot be overstated. In support to this EasyHotel stated that by integrating eco-friendly initiatives such as an infrastructure which is energy efficient and responsible Sourcing the hospitality industry can not only minimise the ecological footprint but can also contribute to the preservation of natural resources and local culture. In addition to that, sustainable hospitality also enhances the brand reputation attracting the socially conscious Traveller prioritising the environmental responsibility choices. It improves positive feedback loop encouraging business to embrace sustainability.
Apart from environmental benefits EasyHotel stated that it also stimulates economic growth by creating local job opportunities and supporting community development. As the Travellers nowadays are becoming more aware of their impact on the environment they are also looking for accommodation which is in line with their value driving the need for sustainable offering. The transition ultimately towards sustainable hospitality is not only about the choice but it is necessary for long term competitive advantage. By embracing the shift the hotel and hospitality sector will not only safeguard the planet but will also secure a resident and prosperous future. There is a symbiotic relationship between renewable sources of energy and Energy Efficiency to transform the landscape of the industry in the hospitality sector.
Embracing the pillar not only addresses the environmental concerns but also enhances operation and efficiency and guest satisfaction. EasyHotel can incorporate Energy Efficiency measures like efficient appliances and significantly reduce the energy consumption that can reduce the operational cost and carbon footprint. Integrating renewable sources of energy like turbines and solar panels provide a clear and sustainable power supply further reducing the dependence on fossil fuel. Hospitality establishment by implementing these strategies according to EasyHotel can not only contribute to the Global climate objective but can also enhance the appeal for environmentally conscious Travellers. Incorporation of green technology resonates with the guest improving positive brand image and customer loyalty. The practices improve financial dependency by mitigating the impact of energy price fluctuation. However, according to Han (2021), the shift of the hospitality industry towards renewable and sustainable energy stands as Testament to the commitment for environmental stewardship and guest satisfaction. Efficient recycling and waste management also have become a significant aspect in shaping the environmental impact of the hospitality industry.
As easyHotel is looking out for sustainable solutions, effective waste reduction strategy is emerging as a game changer. Kaur (2021) said that hospitality establishments are increasing adoption of a comprehensive recycling program by segregating the waste at source and diverging the material away from landfill. It will not only minimise the environment and impact but also cultivate a responsible image resonating with the Eco conscious guest. In addition to that easyHotel can also embrace the circular economy principle where the items are represented or recycled into new products reducing the need of raw material and conserving energy. Efficient waste management practice also streamlines the operation by cutting the cost associated with disposal. easyHotel can prioritise recycling and reduction and choose a more sustainable path to align with the evolving Expectations of the customer. The shift can be a Testament to the commitment of the sector for both environment and quality service stewardship. Duric and Potočnik Topler (2021) states that water conservation has become a Paramount concern in the hotel and hospitality sector as the sustainable practices take the centre stage. The author adds that resort and restaurants or hotels are adopting innovative Strategies for minimising the use of water and reducing the ecological footprint.
Conclusion
From the above discussion it can be concluded that sustainable practices make the hospitality organisations stand out. Conserving energy and reducing waste benefit the budget hotels to cut down the cost and encourage the customers to choose the company over its competitors. While sustainability in the hospitality is offering a clear advantage managers of EasyHotel still need to overcome certain challenges for building the sustainable strategy. It is important for the company to provide adequate resources and training to the employee about the misconception that sustainability cost more money and consumer always it not care about it. Advancement in the technology related to the renewable energy is reducing the cost to use sources like geothermal and solar energy. In this aspect the budget hotel can collaborate with tour operator supporting local culture and economy which in the long run will be financially beneficial for the company.
It can be found from the data and sources collected through secondary method of Data Collection that organisations are also concerned about sustainable practices that can distract the guest experience one of the objective of the work was also to examine the effectiveness of sustainability standards on the guest experience in the hotel and hospitality industry. Considering the case example of EasyHotel also it can be stated that by carefully focusing on the needs and Expectations of the guests the company can customise the service accordingly and improve the aspect of the business. In this aspect easyHotel can implement a low fixer like toilet or in shower that significantly reduces water wastage while at the same time maintaining the comfort of the guest. Sensor based technology and irrigation systems or rainwater harvesting can also optimise the water management. According to Calisto et al., (2021), encouraging the guest to participate in the conservation of water like reusing the tower and using water judiciously can help the companies in the hospitality industry to create collaborative approaches towards sustainability. Implementing these approaches will not only help easyHotel to contribute to the Global Water Preservation but will also resonate environmental conscious Traveller demand and handsome the reputation in the competitive market.
