Question 1
For me, being a nurse means providing care and healthcare services to needy persons with the consideration of ethics and values (Alligood, 2017). The SoNM philosophy of nursing reflects on four areas which include autonomy and self-determination, social and reproductive justice, collaboration and community engagement, and accountability (Nursingmidwiferyboard, 2022). I follow the philosophy to provide services to needy persons with the consideration of my own values, beliefs, and qualities. My values, beliefs, and qualities in providing services are based on empathy, compassion, and safe practices to care for and the health of the patients. My values and belief in providing services to the patients involve the accountability to the safe practices as per the standards of SoNM philosophy. In consideration of the literature associated with nursing, it can be said that my value of prioritizing safe practices with compassion is aligned with the basics of nursing.
Question 2
My culture has always taught me to show empathy to every human being without considering the race, religion, or ethnicity of the person. I feel these aspects of my culture are influencing in delivering of services to all. It is also considered due to the importance of providing care to all persons in the profession of nursing (Nursingmidwiferyboard, 2022). Though my culture taught me to provide care and support to every individual without considering any personal aspects of a person or patient’s culture the scenario of nursing in the UK is quite different (Buchan, Sercombe, & Smith, 2018). The UK is full of people with diverse cultures which is why people from a different cultures can avoid taking services from me. However, the values and ethics of the profession along with my cultural aspects influence in delivering care with the consideration of a patient’s needs. In the future, I would also like to continue delivering services to needy persons with the consideration of professional ethics and values.
Question 3
Being a nurse, I feel the profession plays an important role in society. I play an important role as a nurse to advocate for health promotion and educate patients and the public to prevent illness as well as injury. Along with this, the importance of my role also includes care and support for treatment along with assistance for rehabilitation. My personal quality of patience and calmness can have a positive impact on society through the practice of nursing. This is because patience and calmness can help in providing better and improved care (Meehan, Timmins, & Burke, 2018). The SoNM philosophy or nursing can also have an influence on society through my work practice. For example, community engagement can influence improving the health of a particular population with safe healthcare related practices.
Question 4
In order to maintain my commitment to the profession of nursing, I would like to perform my work with the proper obligation to the ethical standards of nursing as well as the procedure of delivering care in the profession (Chao, et al., 2017). In the future, I would also like to continue with my commitment by engaging in professional development. Professional development helps individuals in improving their knowledge and understanding of delivering care in the profession. With professional development, I feel the ability to understand and learn new ways of care and treatment would be easier for me in near future.
