Advanced Project Management Assignment Sample
Brief Introduction to the Project
The project of Burj Dubai is an engineering marvel of the 21st century and the tallest ever human construction in the earth having 800 meter tall and accommodating around 160 floors which is built upon the Y- shaped structure. The brief collaboration of the stakeholders and investors has successfully implemented the structure in accordance with uniqueness and strength with the high-performance concrete design of the massive structure. In order to sustain the wind disruption in the valley of deserts the construction has incorporated the high-performance concrete and steel braced structural frame as well as wind engineering techniques to reduce the dynamic wind excitation and other challenges to sustain own self. Around the beginning of the year 2004 the construction of Burj Dubai started while after six years in the year 2010 the building was inaugurated at the name of Burj Khalifa. Moreover, Owings & Merrill has designed the structure of the building where Adrian Smith worked as an architect and William F. baker worked as structural engineer for the project to accomplish without any dispute. The building is designed on the shape of geometries of desert flower with Islamic pattern of architecture to become culturally reflective design and identity to incorporate in the world order.
Risk Management
The main approach of risk management is to mitigate the risk of a project and in the Burj Khalifa building project, a risk management group has been developed to reduce the project risks in an effective way. It may be opined that the project of making Burj Khalifa may be considered as one of the most successful projects in the world while this project has faced many risks. The project team played a central role in ensuring the success of the Burj Khalifa building project while without effective teamwork the project may not be successful. Additionally, one of the main roles of the project team is to focus on them and need to identify the risk and resolve the risk by implementing effective solutions. The Burj Khalifa building project is a proper example of innovative construction engineering as the building is extremely tall and based on three wings that are linked with four bays. It is one of the biggest duties of the project manager to analyse the existing and upcoming risks by creating effective communication management which is useful in providing the entire information of the project to higher authorities (Abraham, 2019). The engineers of the building have designed a Y shaped building that provides Burj Khalifa maximum sunlight in the area.

Risk management is one of the most important things which needs to be marinated in every project or else the workflow of the project may be disrupted or many problems may occur in the project. A successful project manager needs to follow some rules or steps such as proper planning, monitoring the detailing of work and many more as regular monitoring may be able to mitigate the risks of the project. A multiple level building is always associated with the risk of smoke propagation as the engineers of the project implemented Markov modelling which is extremely beneficial in mitigating this risk in an effective way (Gomez et al., 2021). Proper construction planning will be influential in mitigating the risk of the project as the expert team members of the Burj Khalifa building project designed proper planning to make this project successful. The project team of Burj Khalifa also maintained an effective procurement framework which helps the engineers in analysing the environment of the project area and choosing proper suppliers for the project. The team members of the project also designed a Gantt chart and identified existing and upcoming risks which played a crucial role in establishing a proper risk magnet team for the Burj Khalifa construction project.
Stakeholder Management
The construction of Burj Dubai was a development of a multipurpose, ultra-high skyscraper to become the world’s tallest building with several optimistic engineering plans, policies and pro-efficient management of investor Emaar properties with the joint venture of Samsung, BeSix and Arab Tec (Bodolica et al., 2018). It might be noted that the employee ‘s hard work was considered as the ladder to become a successfully developed tallest building on the earth. The other stakeholders are Turner international who worked as construction engineer with other counterparts to successfully execute the building project of Burj-Dubai. On a specific note, government authorities and regulation are the prime consideration for implementing flexible stakeholder management with law boundedness and government authorization. The investor and client management were quite crucial for coordinating the different team and company to pro-actively cooperate in the structural design and implementation (Abraham, 2019). Project management had engaged with all the stakeholder to successfully outcome the result within a short period of time through incorporating the cross-functional flexibility in operational procedure with multi-cultural competency to collaboratively prepare, plan, arrange and do participation to effectively build the construction.

It has been mentioned that the construction project had followed the key communication strategy to ramp up the infrastructure development according to the atmospheric pressure of the region; political stability of the nation has helped to accomplish the large developmental project. The allocation of land, climate impact, sustainability, resilience of the building has taken into deep consideration for the building. The corresponding developmental project across the world is envious of the success of the project with comparative management of stakeholder to finish the project within six year. The project management has gained the confidence of investors with the participation of globally acknowledged organizations and collectively engaged with the project management and respective authorities to fulfil the demand in an authentic way with complete features of highly attractive attributes. On the other hand, it becomes more important to manage the individual team to work according to the routine development of real time information sharing and getting checked regularly for further minimization of complexity. The improvement in corporate resilience has helped the business world to participate in the construction project considering environmental jolts (Balasubramanian, 2020).
It may be stated that project management had offered an inclusive cooperation and cross functional capability to boost the productivity and performance of each contributor to greatly achieve sustainability among the adverse conditions of desert country. Developer, architect, contractor, suppliers, regulatory bodies, buyers, end users and non-government organizations are the stakeholders of construction projects where managing conflicting interests and challenges are vitric for the project management to continue the progress in the mega project (Shaheen, 2019). The project management has coordinated the critical issues with effective communication, engagement, information sharing, making decisions with regulatory framework to successfully accomplish the dream in reality with structural genius Burj Khalifa. On a brief note, the successful integration stakeholder is vital to cooperate the building finance and the use of innovation for making a better, transparent and accountable approach. It also contributes the end user’s feedback to actualize the creation of construction for quick follow up with plumbing technology and others in building construction projects (Aredah et al., 2021). On a contradictory note, the influence of social feedback with the attrition management from different partners for commonality in working progress had effectively been addressed for ensuring the construction project of Burj Dubai.
Success Review
Project managers always prefer the success of the project as in this case the managers of the construction project worked hard and effectively in achieving the success of the project. In addition to that, Emaar properties has mainly designed the Burj Khalifa which is one of the most famous construction companies in the Middle East. One of the main visions of the company is to convert the impossible task into possible as the design of the buildings is extremely complex. Moreover, many oyster ventures and economies are included in this project management such as Merril architecture, turner Construction Company, constructer of Samsung and many more. A reputed journal states that the final cost of the project was$ 1.5 Billion which is a huge amount that has exited the estimated budget and for that reason the project was not able to meet the satisfaction level of many stakeholders (Papadaki et al., 2019). Due to good project management, the engineers have completed this impossible task as it was extremely difficult to construct this tall building in the arid surface of UAE. There are many negative points which makes this project an unsuccessful one such as the massive increase of budget and later deliverables of the project, however, there are many more reasons which may be treated as the positive points of this project and that makes the project successful.

It needs to be implied that Burj khalifa is a historical monument as the hardworking and proper planning of the team were able to make the tallest building in the world in a professional manner. Gravity was one of the most challenging things which occurred during the construction of the building, however, the brilliance and intelligence of engineers and general workers have designed a proper plan to resolve these issues which make this project a successful one. UAE mainly has an oil based economy and for that reason, the government of the country wants to convert this economy in order to improve global recognition. Burj khalifa has played a central role in improving the economy of the UAE and it attracts many foreign tourists and organization to business in this country which indicates the UAE is one of the most successful construction projects in the world (Messeidy, 2019). Along with that, Burj Khalifa is mainly used as a business convention centre as many popular brands of the world have opened their branch in Burj Khalifa which has created a beneficial impact in improving the economy of the country.
Recommendations to Project Managers
Project managers are one of the most important parts of any kind of project and in this construction project managers play multiple roles which have ensured the success of Burj Khalifa construction project. Project managers need to understand the requirements of projects and for that reason, a project life cycle needs to be maintained properly to mitigate the risk of the project. The Burj khalifa building has based on innovative technologies structural engineering method which indicates that without implementing latest technology a company may not be able to get success (Refers to Appendix-1). In a project life cycle many challenges may occur such as financial difficulties, technical issues, coordination issues and many more and due to this cause an effective communication needs to be executed in the civil project life cycle (Rad et al., 2018). Moreover, the project managers needs to maintain an effective communication channels between the all teams as it will make this project extremely information driven which ensure the success of project management. In other responses, if the project managers of a project will not coordinate with each other than many difficulties may occur in this project which denotes that effective coordination needs to be maintained for the success of the project.
It should be recommended that project managers need to make a proper plan before starting the project and are required to strictly follow this plan. One of the prime benefits of an effective project plan is that it helps the project managers in completing the project on time which will be helpful in meeting the expectation level of stakeholders. Project managers need to find the project within time or else it may be dissatisfied with the stakeholders which may create a negative impact on the success of the project. One of the main roles of stakeholder management in a project is that it increases the trust among stakeholders about the success of the project. An effective stakeholder’s management needs to maintain a healthy relationship with stakeholders with the help of effective communication and leadership (Oliveira and Rabechini, 2019). A risk response team needs to be developed by the project managers or else the risks of the project may be increased and that may hamper the final outcome of the research. A quick risk response team will also provide financial, technological support and provide the best solution in order to reduce the risk of the construction project. A work breakdown structure needs to be followed by the project managers and also required to implement a step by step approach in order to complete the project within the estimated budget.
On the other hand, an effective team needs to be built by the project managers such as engineers, workers, interior designers and many more as a successful team may be able to provide a successful project. Every project manager, labours and engineer needs to be properly engaged or else it may create an adverse impact which ruins the final outcome of a construction project.
The recommendations for project managers are as follows:-
- It should be recommend that project managers needs to always implement an innovative and effective technologies in order to ensure the success of the project
- It is one of the duty of the property managers analyse the entire land of the construction project which may help the managers in designing an proper construction plan for the project
- Project managers needs to maintained an effective communication to mitigate the risk factors of the project
- A quick risk response team needs to be designed by the project managers which may identify and resolve the risks factors of the project
- It should be recommended that project managers require to make proper budget plan which helps to complete the project within the budget
- An estimated project timeline needs to be maintained to ensure the delivery of the project within time.
Final conclusions
From the above discussion, it may be concluded that Burj Khalifa is not only a successful construction project of the Middle East, however, it may be considered as one of the most successful construction projects made by humans.
