In this connection, an individual reflective essay has been presented based on my experience in the company Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Through this consideration, my focus would be to reflect on the importance of responsibility as a future leader in the workplace. Thus, with Gibbs’s reflective cycle and an appropriate theoretical perspective sustainability and its importance will be presented. Moreover, enterprise engagement with sustainable practices will be identified in this essay with a critical approach toward leadership. In addition, further improvement for employability prospects in the future will be analysed with a thorough presentation.
Discussion
Meaning of sustainability
In my experience, I feel the equilibrium of the economy, environment, and equity is referred to as sustainability. In addition, the integration of social justice, environmental health, and opting for building resilience leads to the prosperity of the future generation (Villar et al. 2023). Based on my experiences until now, I feel sustainability is one of the most important aspects that lead to the interconnectedness of problems in a systematic way that can impact the overall profitability of a business. During my work experience at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, I was trained regarding the importance of sustainable aspect in an individual interpersonal skill that impacts on contributing to the overall ecosystem as well as the organisational growth. Hence, I acknowledged that sustainability is a key concept that meets the presentation of maintaining accuracy in society.
Enterprise engages with sustainability
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has been identified to be dedicated to promoting sustainability with new car technology and innovation. It has been identified that the company is benefiting the environment by accepting and advocating to engage with sustainable practices (Enterprise, 2024). Moreover, the organisation prioritises the best for its employees, customers, as well as business. Undertaking this context, I feel that stakeholder theory is one of the most essential theoretical perspectives that are properly aligned with organisational engagement approaches toward sustainability. According to the theory, it portrays that businesses focus on maintaining relationships with investors, employees, and the community while creating value for them (Freeman, 2023). In this regard, businesses focus on ethics and development for managing organisational interests. Thus, in this context, the organisation is dedicated to sustainability with effective management experiences while ensuring that more renewable fuels are being used to address environmental impact. As a result, the company consequently provides the most efficient car models such as hybrid and electric cars as a means of sustainable engagement (Enterprise, 2024) (Refer to Appendix 1). Referring to the experience and evaluation of the organisation, I feel this sustainability engagement is authentic, as the organisation has had this approach since 60 years ago (Enterprise, 2024).
Individual areas of interest
I believe that action is mostly required for sustainability besides aspirations. Companies need to stop just making lofty claims about sustainability while creating comprehensive achievable plans (Zhang and Gibson, 2021). My experience has led me to believe that teamwork is essential to achieving my potential leadership goals, which could entail collaborating across conventional lines of competition to share resources, best practices, and expertise. Furthermore, in my experiences, I faced few difficulties in my role related to data execution and utilisation. Using massive amounts of data for meaningful applications and the transition from planning to execution was one of the biggest challenges I had to overcome.
Based on the sense of the situation, I feel these instances in my experience have impacted my roles and influenced my leadership approach. Due to my experience, I have gained an understanding of the aspects of sustainable business practices that can impact on overall business understanding while improving my leadership approach toward engaging and promoting sustainability among individuals. Other than these, the issue of data execution and its utilisation has influenced my leadership approach as I have focused on improving my digital capabilities and technology skills that might impact the overall profitability of my interpersonal skills as well as promoting digitalisation among individuals.
Besides this, I have learned about the context of stakeholders, as it has been effectively managed in Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I have learned that the company specifically focuses on its stakeholders and shareholders, which has improved its competitiveness in the marketplace impacting overall sustainable initiative and understanding. Moreover, I have learned that I need to focus on having courage and conviction that would empower me with a sense of dream and vision that can set and develop interpersonal capabilities that would lead to enhancing my employability aspect. Moreover, from the learning and experience in the organisation, I have further understood that digital skills are required for the improvement that would support my employability prospect. For evidence, currently, businesses are focusing on those individuals who acquire knowledge regarding digital technology and understand appropriate analytical aspects (Urbinati et al. 2020).
In terms of the reflective cycle, I learned that an action plan is the most important aspect that leads to focusing on changes that can impact future instances (Refer to Appendix 2). Regarding this, I would further focus on improving commercial awareness and problem-solving capabilities that can impact my responsibleness. In an organisation, the leader needs to focus on problem-solving areas along with understanding the positive attitude that can lead to offer quality instances to the environment. Thus, with these considerations along with understanding sustainability and shareholder perspective, these improvements are required for my professional development.
Conclusion
Based on the overall analysis and experiences while working in Enterprise Rent-A-Car, I have gained numerous skills in terms of teamwork, collaboration, and sharing resources effectively. However, there are issues that I have faced during my experience, such as data execution and utilisation, which requires further development while undertaking the context of sustainability. An aspect of stakeholder theory has been aligned in this essay, which has improved my understanding regarding organisations responsibleness towards its potential shareholders. Besides this, an appropriate focus on further development has been put into while reflecting on enhancing positive attitudes towards problem-solving capabilities, and commercial awareness along with considering quality instances for responsibleness.
