This report deals with highlighting the sustainable approach that has been adopted by Costa Coffee. Costa Coffee is operating as the second largest coffeehouse chain globally and is headquartered in Dunstable, England (Costa.co.uk, 2021). Costa Coffee deals with products such as coffee, sandwiches, sweet snacks, tea and further iced drinks. However, there have been several challenges that have been faced by Costa Coffee with respect to sustainability management. These aspects have been causing major issues within the organisation leading to hinder financial and management aspects. Costa Coffee is currently operating with 18,412 employees globally (Costa.co.uk, 2021).
2. Overview of Sustainability Strategies and Challenges faced by Costa Coffee
There have been several sustainable challenges that are being faced by Costa Coffee. These challenges can be highlighted as coffee producing nations have reportedly portrayed extreme levels of poverty and further lack of appropriate social infrastructure (LealFilho et al., 2019, p.179). The economic sustainability of coffee processing industries and cafes are directly linked with social sustainability of communities that work for extraction of coffee beans. Moreover, wastes that are being produced contribute to the huge amount of landfill that reportedly acts as polluting elements. Additionally, Costa Coffee lacks measures that are responsible for reduction of energy wastage within an organisation, and further this aspect leads to hindrance in sustainability management.
However, there have been several strategies adopted by Costa Coffee to ensure sustainability management. These strategies have helped Costa Coffee to ensure progressive approach towards environment friendly business and further effective satisfaction of consumer base (Costa.co.uk, 2021). These changes and sustainable adaptations can be highlighted as adaptation of waste management facilities in roastery of Costa Coffee. This has ensured reduction in waste that add up to landfills. Moreover, there have been measures that have been adapted by Costa Coffee that have helped with reduction of energy consumption within the organisation (Lee et al., 2019, p.133).
Moreover, Costa Coffee has incorporated a rainwater harvesting system that is responsible for generation of hot water that is effectively utilised by roastery. In addition, Costa Coffee has also adapted to sources and machineries associated with renewable energy generation. Incorporation of this approach has been accomplished with installation of solar panels that generate 249Kw of energy and supports entire Costa Coffee’s functional aspects (LealFilho et al., 2019, p.179). Furthermore, Costa Coffee has established “Eco Pods,” that is a concept of sustainability management and low-energy consumptions. In addition, it has also adapted to strategies with respect to carbon mapping (Costa.co.uk, 2021).
3. Sustainable strategy plan of costa coffee

Costa coffee faces several environmental issues with its product and therefore for mitigating environmental impact on product it is necessary to formulate a sustainable development plan for attracting customers through its product. Presence of plastic polyethylene lining on coffee cups generates environmental threats and it takes several years to break down properly. Data suggests that Costa coffee throws 2.5 billion coffee cups each year and therefore it leads to significant wastage of coffee cups in the UK. Through adopting a sustainable strategy, the negative impact of disposable cups on the environment will be mitigated. In order to recycle products it is necessary to adopt a specialist recycling facility for addressing these issues. In order to deliver sustainable service to customers and planet costa coffee, replace plastic cups with paper cups for mitigating the impact of plastic pollution on the environment (Tomislav, 2018, p, 67). It is necessary to adopt a sustainable development strategy for delivering quality service to customers considering the impact of plastic pollution on the environment.
3.2 Sustainable strategy plan and its relevance in costa coffee
It is necessary to formulate a sustainable strategy plan for bringing growth and productivity to an organisation. Costa coffee adopts effective measures for attracting customers to its service. Customer satisfaction is given priority for building productivity and growth to an organisation. Replacing plastic cups with biodegradable cups will provide costa coffee an added advantage for their market expansion and therefore it plays a pivotal role in the market expansion strategy of costa coffee (Saleh et al., 2020, p.530). Successful implementation of a strategic plan requires coordination and cooperation from employees as well as leaders of an organisation. Costa coffee makes a strategic plan for providing a competitive edge to this organisation and therefore it helps to build growth and productivity to this organisation. In order to retain valued customers as well as increase the customer base it is necessary to put special emphasis on environmental sustainability to its product. Development of recyclables and biodegradable cups will attract customers and it will bring growth and productivity to this organisation. Coffee cups lead to industry related problems and therefore it is necessary to develop a recycling strategy for meeting challenges. In order to build a sustainable future it is necessary to put special emphasis on recycling strategy as it helps to bring productivity and growth of Costa coffee. Costa coffee launched an introductory offer while starting the Costa coffee loyalty scheme. According to this scheme, customers will get an extra bean for buying barista drinks though using reusable cups. Through adopting the sustainable plan, costa coffee achieves growth and productivity in the market and therefore it helps to build a sustainable future for costa coffee (Ge et al., 2018, p.3631).
3.3 Mission, vision and values towards sustainability
It is necessary to have a vision, mission and goals for an organisation for achieving growth and productivity in business. Without a definite vision and mission, the organisation faces many hurdles and therefore it acts as a restraining force behind growth and productivity to an organisation (Narimissa et al., 2020, p.247).

4. Implementation strategy of costa coffee
Costa coffee is a leading coffee brand, which adopts effective measures for delivering environmentally sustainable service to its customers. Meeting customer’s needs is given priority and therefore for delivering suitable service to its customers it adopts various strategies for bringing growth and suitability to this organisation. In order to reduce the environmental impact of coffee cups on the environment, Costa coffee changed the lining of cups with plant-based plastics instead of oil-based plastics. New cup launched by costa coffee helps in lowering carbon footprint by 26% and therefore it plays a pivotal role in maintaining environmental sustainability (Chofreh et al., 2018, p.1345). Strategic partnership with Veolia helps costa coffee to recycle various cardboard and plastics through operational recycling methods. In order to build sustainable growth of an organisation it is necessary to implement strategy effectively and efficiently for achieving growth and productivity to an organisation. Costa coffee introduces BURT facilities for making cups reusable and it helps to tackle environmental issues effectively. BURT is the abbreviation of borrow, reuse, use and take back and therefore adoption of BURT makes it easier for reusing its product. Strategic partnership with Valpak helps it to launch the “national Cup recycling scheme” and therefore it helps to maintain environmental sustainability. Recycling of around 155 million cups was done through utilising this scheme and it helps to bring sustainable growth to the organisation. In order to mitigate environmental impact Costa coffee builds cooperation and coordination with others for meeting customers’ needs.
5. Conclusion
This report effectively summarises the sustainability and environmental management plan of Costa Coffee. There have been several sustainable challenges that are being faced by Costa Coffee and have impacted its brand image and further revenue generation approaches. This report has highlighted several strategies and approaches to sustain sustainability management within the organisation. Costa Coffee has considered establishment of “Eco Pods,” that is a concept of sustainability management and low-energy consumptions. In addition, it has also adapted to strategies with respect to carbon mapping.
