BUSI1360 Job Search and Theory Assignment Sample
Module code and Title: BUSI1360 Job Search and Theory Assignment Sample
Introduction
Job search can be stressful without having any relevant experience. As mentioned by Altman et al. (2022), getting a job opportunity without experience is considered a loss for an organisation according to labour market theory. This report is going to use “Gibbs reflective cycle” for reflect on the real life experience of job searching. It emphasises the benefits of association with “WORP 1003 module” for getting the first job through sound knowledge and skills.

Description
I was looking for a job in my stream or industry in “Job today”, “Indeed” and “LinkedIn” apps. I was a fresher and finished my graduation recently. Now, I was looking for a job because I was a fresh graduate. I was researching online and also attended interviews, which were recommended by my university and college. I had applied all of them and I had found one from “Job today” app. Now I got a job in a management team for supervising which was recommended by some of my friends.
Before that I had attended many of the interviews I had applied for many jobs and experience was required everywhere. I also asked them if I could get a job with my student visa because I am a new graduate and don’t have any job experience. They said that there is no job for the student visa but will ask their headquarters about this. Internships can make us learn new things like CV making, interview preparation and for some recommendations (Guijarro, 2018). I had learned that without any experience looking for a job is very difficult. Then I felt that, to have a job I need to do an internship.
Feelings
When I had joined the university or the college there was a drawback that I had got a lot of space before joining the college. The span of coming the joining letter from the union has caused the problem, which made it late to start the higher study at college (Nassaji, 2021). This is the main drawback I had while joining the college. So, then I had gone through many interviews, some of my college recommendations and some from the job apps.
I had attended all of them but all of the companies wanted experience in those fields they were hiring for. I had enquired about the student visa card to get a job but all of them denied, some said they will ask headquarter then they will contact. Now, I was desperate to get a job where I can gain some experience.
Evaluation
I was a fresher graduate and I was suffering from having one job. I just wanted to get a job in any field. After a while, I got one for this current job which I am doing now. I met this friend only one year ago, before that I did not have many friends who could recommend or help me for a job. This was a weak tie from my side and this made me slow from getting a job. I had come through “WORP 1003” module and did some research about it online.
This is actually a module, which will prepare a person for an internship. It actually helped me to prepare for an internship; helped me in interviews, body language, support and also helped to make a CV. This actually helped me to grow and helped to prepare myself for an internship. I had completed the internship and was prepared to give more interviews. I found this job and this was a recommendation by a friend whom I met a year ago.
Analysis
So, I found a module which I found while researching online is called “WORP 1003”. It helped me to grow and got so many suggestions to make myself enough efficient to secure an internship. Then I searched online as guidance of this module. I had done many workshops online which helped me to know the practicality of industrial work. As discussed by Zhang and Li (2019) “Boosting employability”, “solving commercial challenges”, “building business knowledge” made a great impact on the career.
After that this platform also helped me to grow up and made me capable enough to give an interview positively. I had also posted my career-related questions in different platforms online from there I got my satisfactory answers. Coaching centers also helped me to learn new things about academics. I had also researched online on this topic and gathered more knowledge from there.
As discussed by Willison (2018), researching skill is vital for searching for a job by interpreting personal potentiality. Social media is rapidly used by me where can see many contents on social media and posted many questions regarding those which also helped me a lot (Blake and K, 2020). CV is the most important thing while applying for jobs. So, I did research about it and found that I can make a CV in different ways which should attract the interviewers for having a job.
Conclusion
These are the things I had experienced while I was searching for a job. I had learned that if one person wants to have a job in any field or industry then he or she has to grow their analytical skills. Guidance for the job searching with “WORP 1003” is the best module one can get from the internet (Avram et al. 2018). I should have worked more with my weak ties and searching for jobs online.
I should have not approached the union which made me late for joining my university. This span of time made me slow in the competition world and I had struggled in searching for jobs. Anyone who will come to me and ask for career-guidance I will surely recommend them these paths and the “WORP 1003” module which is a very efficient way for any student.

Theoretical perspective
Job search theory
Figure 2: Aspects of Job search theory (Source: Influenced by Boyele, 2021)
Search theory has various perspectives and in the context of searching for a job, this theory provides two main frameworks. As mentioned by Boyele (2021), search theory is broadly use for explaining the insufficiencies of employment in the labour market. Moreover, it has an impact on social networks in the process of job search. Job search theory in relevance with the job searching process consists of two main theories, one is social network theory and another one is “labour market theory”. This theory to some extent includes “unemployment, availability of vacancy, labour wage and job creation”.
This theory is mainly used for analysing “economic theory” and in context with job search it shed light on insufficiency of job in the market that leads to unemployment rate to go higher. Vacancy rate is higher in case of tightness in the labour market. Moreover, unemployment rate is higher in case of reduction in job creation. This theory also emphasises social networking in the procedure of job search.
A strong social tier is very helpful to get recommendation and a weak tie reduces the chance of getting employment through recommendations. I took a lot of stress while searching for a job and did not really know the ways of better opportunity in an organisation. Thus, I have joined an internship with WORP 1003 to gain better information and knowledge to get a job. (Referred to appendix 1)
Social network theory
Figure 3: Aspects of Social Network Theory (Source: Influenced by Chi and Martin, 2020)
Mark Sanford Granovetter is known for his best work that is to create a theory of social networking. As opined by Chi and Martin (2020), the social network theory by Granovetter emphasis on “strength of weak ties”. This theory means that a strong network often shares the same types of information as they have a very strong bond and know each other very well.
On the other hand, “weak ties” depicts a people, who know each other but not too closely. In simple words, a person from the same background knows each other but they do not share a strong bond. For instance, “old school friends, former co-workers” share weak ties as they belong from the same background but currently do not share a strong bond due to lack of communication.
Granovettor, in this theory depicts that strong ties are beneficial to motivate one towards getting a job, as they know each other very well. However, this theory maximises the importance of weak ties as they can provide valuable information regarding a job or can recommend a person for a job due to former relation or former same background. As mentioned by Pan and Chee (2020), strong and weak, both types of ties connect nodes of networking, but people tend to underestimate the importance of weak ties to get a job.
Weak ties are important as they work as a bridge to connect with new people and share valuable information regarding job opportunities. They can recommend a job that would be beneficial for employment. People with strong ties often share the same kind of information as they “know each other well” and are helpful for motivating them to get a new job. Thus, weak ties are beneficial for getting new job opportunities and help to get employed. Hence, Granovetter considers the “strength of weak ties” for getting new job opportunities, recommendation and most importantly connection with new people through the bridge of weak ties.
I have weak ties with people but not with the same background and I use to visit people to get a recommendation. I have come from a different country and that is why I did not have any friends with the same background. Moreover, my concept regarding weak ties was different initially and I consider that I only have weak ties.
However, after going through the theory of social network, I feel that I have only strong bonds and no weak ties. I have no friends with the same background but I am more associated with those that take active participation in my daily life. Hence, I face problems getting job recommendations or information regarding job opportunities due to no weak ties and more strong ties.
Labour Market Theory
Figure 4: Components of Labour Market Theory (Source: Influenced by Altman, 2022)
Labour market theory is a part of search theory that emphasises on “demand and supply of labour”. This theory depicts that an organisation never provides maximum wages or wages that are more than the revenue generation rate of a particular employer. For instance, an employee can create an $8 dollars’ product, which a company sells for $16 dollars. In that case, labour wage can be up to $15 but not more than this amount. The equilibrium of the labour market is determined by the employment level.
Organisations always prioritise generating better revenue and it causes lower wages. Thus, an organisation always wants to attract the best talents at minimum wage to increase profitability. Demand of labour depends on the unemployment rate of a nation. More unemployment leads to more unskilled labour that can cause low revenue generation. Hence, companies always want skilled labour with experience for better profitability. This theory emphasis the discriminations such as “labour discrimination, wage discrimination” for better profitability.
I have no experience as I have recently completed my graduation. I wanted to gain skills through a job that would provide me an opportunity to take active participation in their organisation. However, I did not get any opportunity, as I did not have relevant experience. Thus, discrimination of labour market theory negatively affects my employability.
Job search experience in context to the theory
I am a fresher graduate and was vigorously looking for a new job opportunity to get relevant experience in past. I was looking for a job initially through websites and online networking sites that release advertisements regarding job opportunities. I have attended many interviews and ghee interviews were scheduled as I applied for an online job application. Initially all of the interviewers rejected me as I did not have any experience and I was a fresher graduate. It indicates towards discrimination according to the theory of labour market (Lauder and Mayhew, 2020).
Generally, organisations want to gain more revenue through recruiting best talents or skilled employees. Skilled employees are required to provide more wages but that is also not more than their contribution in generating particular revenue. Thus, organisations always consider skilled employees to increase profitability and productivity of their company. Moreover, the interviewer also rejected me due to my migration and wanted to get a recommendation from the union. It gives me lots of stress as they provide less time for completing the task and getting recommendations is a lengthy procedure.
I had only strong ties as I was more associated with people that have an active participation in my daily life and know me well. According to the theory of Granovetter, weak ties are more beneficial to get new job opportunities. I did not find any weak ties as I belong to another country and have very less interaction with people in my graduation. Hence, in accordance with the “theory of social network”, I have a drawback to getting new opportunities.
I ask for people to provide me a job that is relevant to my studies but lack of ties with them is the main reason that none recommend me anything. I asked those people who were completely strangers to me. It took a lot of stress, as I was very unaware of knowledge that can help to get a job.
Alternative actions
I lost all my hopes to get a relevant job until I associated with “WORP 1003 module”. Everyone wants to get a job after completing preliminary education but I did not get any job due to lack of skills and “weak ties”. It was my first action, which was to associate with “WORP 1003 module” and learn relevant knowledge as well as understanding to get job opportunities. Currently, I am working at a high post of managers as well as supervisors for some time.
I did not know anything about theories of “social network” and “labour market” , which I got to know after joining the sessions offered by the “WORP 1003 module”. They not only provide relevant lessons that are important to find a new job but also provide placement opportunities. “WORP 1003 module” provides lessons that help to engage students entirely with the learning process. Collaboration skills, creativity and lifelong learning are important to get a job in the 21st century (Dörner and Funke, 2017).
They provide me with vital knowledge regarding CV making and provide training to prepare a CV that is the first step for applying for any job. They conduct events that are helpful to communicate with other people and sometimes it can help to get “weak ties” with people.
I have already mentioned that I belong from a different country and I did not have any “weak ties” that can help me to provide recommendation or information regarding a new job. “WORP 1003 module” provides the opportunity to create bonds through communication with other peoples that can act as “weak ties” in future. Moreover, associating this module helps me a lot to know about frequently asked questions in a job interview.
I sometimes cannot deliver a proper answer to interviewers before joining this module, which reduces the chance of getting selected. However, “WORP 1003 module” provided me with knowledge of frequently asked questions and prepared me for real interviews. They provide the opportunity of learning through “coaching groups” which helps me to gain various types of information and most importantly my communication skills are enhanced due to coaching classes.
I gain a lot of confidence due to group discussion and exchanging opinions helps me to gain various information, which can be helpful for the future. Besides, “WORP 1003 module” provides essential materials for study and it helps a lot to gain relevant knowledge for cracking interviews. They provide the entire season through E-learning and innovative techniques that strengthen the engagement with the entire session even more. Student engagement can be achieved through innovative methods of learning (Shenoy et al. 2020).
I used to watch mini vlogs and it helps me a lot to get detailed information regarding grooming personality for getting a job. I get a lot of information related to “Visa and sponsorship” through the provided material of this session. Thus, It helps to get permission and recommendation letters from the union in less time. They also provide training related to making CVs and preparing for an interview, which I have already mentioned before.
However, “CAR technique” was completely new for me, which is “context, action and result”. As opined by Hemming (2021), “CAR technique” is an excellent way to boost candidacy in the time of interview and get a competitive edge. In this way, the “WORP 1003 module” helps to get my first job in a managerial position that is relevant to my studies. I have gained a lot of knowledge that would be beneficial for future to crack toughest interviews.
Conclusion
This report has shed light on the importance of gaining valuable knowledge and understanding to get a relevant job. It has found that initially a migrant student faces many challenges to get a relevant job according to their education. “WORP 1003 module” helps a lot to get placement according to education background. It has found that innovative teaching techniques increase student engagement. Moreover, it develops skills and certain knowledge that are helpful to get better job opportunities in future. It can be concluding that “WORP 1003 module” extraordinarily prepares for job search and helps to obtain relevant placement according to educational background.
