The purpose of the report is to provide the executive board with an overview of the CSR practices at Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer. Amazon is involved in kindle e-reader, e-commerce business which is one of the largest providers of cloud computing services. This report will mainly discuss the issues that are perceived as bad and not socially responsible. The reason for the development of the CSR activities will be shown related to the problem the company is facing for a better understanding of sustainability in the future.
Reason for the executive to commit to CSR
The CSR practices help the corporate to have a good relationship with corporate governance keeping a good balance. It helps to support the company control mechanism, increasing the value of the shareholder alongside improving the stakeholder’s satisfaction.
The Amazon company’s main problem related to CSR is the avoidance of sales tax in almost 45 countries out of which only in 5 countries the company pays sales tax (Etchart, 2022). In addition, avoiding country sales tax companies is going against national legislation. The avoidance of the tax has been noticed by many countries that are increasing interferences of the government legislation decreasing the business reputation and customer loyalty mostly in Europe.
The company also has a deteriorated working condition for 50 to 70 long working hours in a week, no holiday leaves, changes in a shift without warning, poor management practices (Mathew and Athishu, 2021). The company has harsh working conditions in the UK, the USA in warehouses where employees have to work for hours increasing employee turnover rate.
CSR benefits
The company needs to focus on ethical responsibilities and the CSR practices will help to get support from the government, no community interferences and the company can satisfy the shareholders with good financial performances. It will help to build a reputation and support for the country’s growth with tax payment, labour ethical practices will increase the value of the company in customers’ eyes (Singh and Misra, 2021). This will increase sales and reduce unwanted intervention from legal institutes. The company is responsible can make it easier for the workforce to stay longer and motivate them for better work performances. The unethical labour practices will be reduced which will reduce public interferences, reduce penalties within the organisation (Park and Kim, 2021). The smooth operation can be easily conducted with employee satisfaction. The attraction of positive media to enhance company reputation, reduce local authority burden, access more investors with no public controversies, and will help get support from employees to develop new business ideas.
Recommendation
Amazon can improve the CSR activities with proper implementation of legal and ethical responsibilities towards the countries that will reduce the interferences of public media, government, legal institutes.
Legal responsibilities: The company has effective economic growth but legal practices to conduct the business are very ineffective. A company with proper legal regulation in a country can operate successfully without future damage to goodwill (Rashid, 2022). The proper sales tax payments on time in various countries where the company earns a large share from the e-commerce industry will help avoid penalties, legal action against the company.
Ethical responsibilities: The employee are part of an organisation and company to survive in the e-commerce industry where the competition is high has to reduce the employee turnover that is high due to various harsh working conditions. The company can restructure the organisational culture practices of remunerating employees higher with overtime, seeking employee permission before changing shifts (Oliveira et. al. 2021). Also, monitoring working conditions to reduce accidents, health insurance policy, safety measures. These are some ethical responsibilities that a company can consider to reduce employee turnover increasing business reputation and creativity while retaining the employee for the long run.
Conclusion
Thus, it can be concluded that CSR activities are very important for the future sustainability of the business. Amazon is a multinational company and due to various business reach in e-commerce platforms, the business reputation needs to be managed with ethical and legal consideration for better brand recognition. The CSR practices will help to economically grow, maintain operation efficiency without legal institute, public community interferences.
