Corruption
In the words of Pelizzo and Stapenhurst, (2014), Corruption can be defined as an unethical practice conducted by a trusted authority so as to gain personal advantage. It incorporates number of activities such as bribery and embezzlement. It can of several kinds and in this study heed is paid to the Grand corruption, Organized corruption, Moral Corruption and Business corruption.
Organized Corruption: FIFA
FIFA is the abbreviation for Federation Internationale de Football Association which is one of the famous bodies to conduct football, beach soccer and futsal. With more than two hundred associations FIFA has earned a strong goodwill for itself. However, even such a reputed organization is again and again charged with the corruption allegations and id even found guilty may times and it is difficult to understand from where it begin and the massive amount it involved. One of the biggest sports corruptions was observed when FIFA was charged to take bribes from the broadcast networks so as to hold the rights to broadcast soccer. FOX network with the other media tycoons such as Media Pro, Full Play Argentina, Grypo Televisa to name a few were charged to bribe for soccer rights. Albeit, with the involvement of US government Burzaco who is CEO of Argentinian sports was found guilty and is now cooperating (Rollins, 2017). Later, in an astonishing revelation it was found that all the companies offered bribes and the top authorities of FIFA were well aware about it which ensures that the corruption took place on a much wider platform. In 2008, Mr. Ganley who is the CEO of Fox Pan American sports even entered into a false contract which was planned to cover $4million bribe given for the soccer rights. Furthermore, Fox was even the official broadcasting partner of FIFA World Cup till 2016 from 2015 (Hurtrado, 2017). This decision even surrounded a lot of controversy as no auction process was done before giving the rights. Many of the executives of FIFA were even held for trials while the investigation was carried on concerning the soccer carried out on international platform.
Conclusion:
FIFA stands as the epitome for football and the whole world has football fever when the FIFA gets started. A sport is not about a country, caste or creed but it unites the whole world as one. Any corruption taking place on such a humongous and famous platform which even plays with the sentiments of millions of people worldwide must be treated with utmost care and strict regulations must be made so as such corruptions do not take place in future. This is the form of Organized corruption where in the culprits have an clear idea about whom to bribe, how much money must be ordered and even how well the person will reciprocate to the bribe. This type of corruption takes place mostly in white collar jobs such as FIFA.
Business Corruption: Hampton Creek
Matthews and Methews, (2016), stated, Hampton creek was a very famous food company located in San Francisco. The brand is quite popular because of its eggless mayonnaise. Since the year 2011 the company was sailing smooth until it fell into the pothole of corruption. The brand fought many legal battles and even won them even when the allegations were put by the bigger food companies. Most of the allegations which were put on the company were concerning its heath claims. But, the company faced a lot criticism when in September 2015 the Bloomberg Business Week accused it for misleading the consumers by exaggerating the health claims by their food products. To mislead the sales to the customers the company even asked its employees and the contractors to buy gargantuan quantity of the product from the retail market by which the sales of the company can get boost up. As the customers today are concerned about the environmental benefits the company even claimed to be environmentally sustainable but later these claims were even proved to be false. On the other hand all such allegations and claims are denied by the Hampton Creek and stated that although the bulk purchases of the products were done but it was to ensure the quality check of the offerings. Later the investigation into this matter was done by the Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Departments (Kosoff, 2017). The corruption was not in terms of money but the company made fool of the customers who are the building blocks of the profitability of any company. With the help of this case a lot of companies came into scrutiny especially the start ups which took place that time.
Conclusion:
The brands do manipulate and modify the facts and figures of the company so as to ensure high return on investments and raise the value of shares but is profitability more important than the customers themselves is the question. Business corruption is a type of corruption where the corruption is not regarded as corruption but it is done so as to increase the turnover of the business. In such cases the companies are not as such affected but under it the acceleration of brand is done. Other forms of such corruption are: money laundering, trading, accounting irregularities and tax evasion. The above case of Hampton Creek is of money laundering where in the money raised by buying the company’s products is used to boost up the sales.
Grand Corruption: Nigerian Politics
In the perception of Eboh, (2016), in 2015, the Presidency of Muhammadu Buhari commenced. He reviewed the past financial status of the country and it was observed that a total amount of $150 billion was not to be found. This corruption took place gradually over the course of a decade. Efforts were put to find where this gargantuan amount went missing and every aspect of the past years was studied so as to find who the culprit was and how the fraud with the citizens of Nigeria was done. Later, Sambo Dasuki who was the former security advisor and even the President of Good luck Jonathan’s National Security was arrested and charged for the theft of $2 billion by manipulating the budget for defence which was formed to defend the country from the terrorist group of Boko Haram which was operative in north eastern regions of Nigeria. Later, Dasuki denied the charges, for using the amount to the contractors so as to make the purchase of helicopters, ammunition and fighter jets. Actions were taken against him as he was abducted by the government officials from his home in Abuja (Paden, 2016). Furthermore, later on investigation it was found that Attahiru Bafarawa who was the proprietor of a T.V station and Raymond Dokpesi were even charged for the corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). All the people involved in the case were politically associated with the past government. The fraud was carried on a wider platform as when the investigation by the anti corruption body was done even Minister of finance Bashir Yuguda and many people from the political background were held responsible for the arm deal (Uddoh, 2016).
On the other hand from the perspective of Mr. Dasuki the present government did not give him or his political party any chance to prove its innocence and blamed it as political conspiracy.
Conclusion:
The corruption which took place in Nigeria engulfed the whole country. It was grand corruption which is the most dangerous type of corruption. Herein, the government and the country were compromised because of the corrupt practices. Under it the public officers are involved which effects the economy and the policies formed for the country. Other than political scenario this corruption even takes place on financial front and administrative offices.
