Introduction to leadership and change
Leaders are playing a significant role in the organization and it is important for companies to have effective leaders. Being a leader and leading the team is not an easy task as the individual needs specific skills, knowledge, and traits that can help them in being an effective leader for the organization (Guzmán et.al. 2020). In this report, the researcher would reflect on his effectiveness as a leader and will also reflect regarding his leadership qualities. Along with this, the researcher would also explain different concepts related to leadership in detail and for reflecting on his effectiveness as a leader, the researcher would focus on using the Gibbs reflection model which would help them in reflecting in an effective manner (Markkanen et.al. 2020).
Classic and Contemporary Theories of Leadership
Leadership is being defined as an ability to motivate others to act effectively towards the goal. Leader of the company needs to be effective at leading the firm and motivating the team members and for this, the leaders should implement effective leadership style and theories which can help them in being a successful leader (Sousa and Rocha, 2019). There are different leadership theories that are being referred to as the contemporary and classical theories of leadership and it is important for the leader to use these theories in an effective manner that can help them in leading the team in an effective manner. Widely used leadership theories are transactional leadership, transformational leadership, and contingency leadership theory. All the leadership theories are based on different concepts as according to transactional leadership the leader focuses on making use of rewards for motivating the employees to deliver high-quality work in the team and help the team in reaching the goal (Iordanoglou, 2018).
In contrast to this in transformational leadership the leader focus on motivating the team members by working with them in an effective manner and also focuses on motivating them to create a change in their working pattern which can help them in reaching their goals easily (Bernarto et.al. 2020). Moreover, the contingency theory of leadership explains something different related to leadership and according to this theory, no particular leadership theory can help the leaders in all the different situations. This theory states that the leader should implement different leadership theories on the basis of a different situation than it would help the leader in being an effective leader.
Critical Self Reflection
Description
According to me I can be a successful leader in my future and can lead the organization in an effective manner as I believe that I am having better leadership skills. Once I got an opportunity to lead the team on a task which had helped me a lot in getting better knowledge related to how to be an effective leader for the team. For this task, we were working in a group of ten students and I was leading the team and I want that we should complete the task in an effective manner. When I was leading the team I faced some of the issues and challenges which had helped me in analysing my strengths and weakness and knowing that what are the important skills and knowledge essential for the leader. We have completed the task on time but the team is not having better teamwork among ourselves and as a result of this we have faced a lot of issues and I think I was not an effective leader for the team.
Feelings
When I was leading the team I think that I was not a good leader as I was only giving instructions to the team members rather than motivating them to work in an effective manner. I feel that if I would have working in a better manner and had focused on developing better teamwork among the team members then it would have helped me in being a successful leader and would have also helped in solving the issue which was being faced by the team members while working in a team. I feel that I was good at communicating with the team but was not effective at developing better cooperation and collaboration among the team members. I was happy while leading the team but was not happy with the result although we have completed the task I felt that things could have been done in a much better way.
Evaluation
I think it was a good experience for me to be a leader and I want to be a successful leader in my future as well. According to me, this experience had helped me a lot in understanding myself and analysing my own personal and professional skills which are important for me as an individual. Along with this, I have also got a better opportunity to learn how to communicate with others while working in a team and how to develop better teamwork among the team members.
Analysis
According to me if I would have focused on understanding my roles and responsibilities in an effective manner then I would have led the team in an effective manner and had developed better cooperation and collaboration within the team. I think I should have focused on working with the team members instead of just allotting them their tasks and If I have worked with them then it would help me in understanding the team members in an effective manner and on the basis of it would have motivated them to do the assigned task nicely. It can be said that being a part of this task had helped me in learning a lot regarding leadership and had also helped me in self-evaluation.
Conclusion
From this task I have understood that for being an effective leader it is important to have a specific set of skills and better knowledge. Form this experience I understood that the leader plays a major role in the organization and the leaders can bring significant change in the organization as they are having an ability to influence of the employees of the company or their followers. I think that leaders play a major role in the change management process of the company and If the leader of the organization or the team is capable to bring effective change to the organization then only the firm can get benefitted from the change. Along with this, I understood that when the leader wants to bring change then they should focus on developing the skills and knowledge of all the employees and work effectively with them during the change process. While leading the teams it is important for the leader to understand the team and implement effective leadership styles such as transactional, transformational, or any other which can help them in bringing the change and leading the firm in an effective manner.
Action Plan
As a result of being a leader in a group activity, I have gained better knowledge related to my strengths and weaknesses which are important for me as a leader. I think that I am not good at motivating others which is my one of the biggest weakness as a leader and along with this I was also not good at developing better integrity and teamwork among the team members which is also a weakness for me. In contrast to this effective communication skills had helped me a lot in communicating effectively with the team members and understanding them which is an important strength for me. Along with this I am good at decision making and managing things which is also a strength for me as an individual. Also, I think that I am not good at emotional intelligence and due to this I was not able to manage the stress while working so I think I should work on developing these skills. I think that I should develop an effective plan for developing my some of the personal and professional skills which are important for me as a leader.
Recommendations
I think that I should focus on developing my teamwork skills which can help me in being a better team member and effective teamwork skills are also important for me as a leader. I think I should try to attend online sessions related to the development of teamwork skills or might attend the workshops so that I can develop my skills. According to my it is important for me to develop better emotional intelligence for which I should focus on controlling my emotions and my reaction towards my emotions then only I would be able to manage the stress and can work effectively while working in a team.
Along with this, I should focus on developing the conflict solving skills for which I would be studying different case studies or viewing different videos related to problem-solving so that it can help me in developing these skills. I think that I should also focus on attending the seminars or the webinars related to leadership and the development of the leadership skills that would help me in being an effective leader. In conclusion, it can be said that it is important for all the employees to have better leadership skills which include a set of personal and professional skills that would help me in being a better employee and leader in the future.
