There are several challenges that are faced by Kerala tourism. Tourism is mainly for travelling for the promotion of leisure and recreational purposes. The “World Tourism Organization” defines tourists as those people that “travel to and Stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited”.
Kerala is a state in the southwest coast of Indian Peninsular that stretches 360 miles along the coast of Malabar and is considered as the paradise of tourism. Kerala is considered as he high-end destination for tourism lying in the Indian Subcontinent. According to the National Geographic Channel Kerala is “one of the fifty destinations to be visited in one’s lifetime”.
The tourism in Kerala is flourishing because of the its moderate climate, cultural attractions, rich art, diverse natural, colorful festivals that makes the “physical quality of life” compared to the developed nations of the country. In comparison to the other states Kerala is unique because of it’s the geographical diversity among all other the nations (Mukhezakule and Tefera, 2019).
The diversity in Kerala offers a range of attractions to the tourists and experiences such as diverse fauna and flora, wildlife sanctuaries, backwaters, evergreen forest, beaches. It is often considered as the “Green Gateway” to the India.
There is a need for critically analyzing and evaluating the challenges that are faced by contemporary tourism, events and hospitality sectors and the skills that are required by the industry professionals. The tourism industry of Kerala is inevitable to the country for a variety of reasons. There are several reasons for the importance of Tourism in Kerala:
- have the ability of earning foreign exchange without the need for exporting
- Promoting hub for the development of the economy
- Generation of opportunities for employment
- Helps in improving the standard of living and the per capita income
- Facilitating the development of the infrastructural facilities
- Tourism is related to the industries such as furnished goods, handcrafts, jewelry, gems, coir, textiles and spices.
- With the involvement of the private entrepreneurs there would be business projects that would be coming up
- Generation of income from the government
- enhancing of multiplied effect
- Promotion of social mobility
There are several challenges that are faced by the tourism and travel industry:
- Disposal of the wastage – Cleanliness and hygiene forms a very important part of Kerala tourism. The waste disposal system of the Kerala is not at all effective (Rao and Zaidi, 2020).
- Road journey – another important challenge is that the road journey in Kerala is very horrible.
- Lack of coordination among various departments – there is a lack of coordination among different departments of Kerala tourism. Hence various department of Kerala tourism should be coordinated properly..
- Guiding services – the guiding services in Kerala is not good enough. The tourism industry of Kerala could be improved by providing proper and effective guiding services.
- Basic amenities – Kerala should try to arrange basic amenities for its tourists. The amenities of Kerala are not according to the requirement and hence the government of Kerala should try at providing better services to their tourists (Mukhezakule and Tefera, 2019).
The tourism sector of Kerala can be developed if these challenges can be improved. Kerala is known as the “God’s own country” for its natural beauty. Moreover, the current pandemic has thrown several challenges to the tourism sector of Kerala. Due to this pandemic people are more cautious of maintaining social distancing.
Tourism industry is the most badly effected sector of the Indian Economy due to the pandemic. Tourism service is one such sector whose service cannot be afforded to the tourists at their homes. Hence, this pandemic have through various kinds of challenges on the tourism sector of Kerala.
Moreover, the main occupation or the means of livelihood of the people of Kerala is dependent on tourism and it is the made industry along with other industries like handmade products making chocolates, soaps and other things.
Hnece, the government of Kerala should undertake proper roles of leadership for improving the tourism sector that is affected by the pandemic (Rao and Zaidi, 2020).
Self-developmental activities for the creation of awareness in leadership, developmental practices and implementation of skills are crucial. There is a need for evaluating and integrating experiential and contextual evidence that are developed through mentoring and learning activities for articulating employability skills. Building of network and working with others from various backgrounds for supporting self development and the development of others.
There is a need for recognizing the need for engaging in the process of lifelong learning for their professional and personal development (Mukhezakule and Tefera, 2019). Kovalam beach is referred to as the prime location as it attracts huge number of visitors from various parts of the globe as a certain time of the year. However, due to this pandemic this could not take place.
The peak season for the attraction of tourist in Kerala is the month of May. During this time of the year we can see travellers flocking at popular destinations. The coveted destinations of Kerala are covered with tourists and these destinations include palaces, lighthouses, museums, and beaches. However, this peak season of Kerala is painted as a bleak picture because of the global pandemic and the resulting lockdown in the nation.
The tour operators, hotels, restaurants, and lodges are visualizing an uncertain future with almost no business the year through. The tourism industry is vulnerable to the changes in the social changes and is regarded as the most unfortunate condition. The impact of the challenges especially the pandemic is creating great impact on the existing adaptations and abilities.
Moreover, the tourism sector of Kerala is vulnerable to the afore-mentioned challenges. Kerala tourism has within itself mountains, sea, backwater, tea garden, and everything (Hagger, 2019).
The Kovalam beach of Kerala usually is swarmed with tourists however is seen deserted on Sunday. However, Kerala at that time has only reported 22 positive Covid 19 cases. However, with the outbreak of the disease the condition became very worse. As days passed by less number of tourist visited the place.
However, the Kerala sector of tourism is supporting the government and the health department for the steps taken by them for the prevention of corona virus. the government is supporting the guests that is the domestic and the foreign travellers that are with them. Till the time tourists are checking out the tourists are provided with the required facilities.
Moreover, they are not allowing their tourists to go to any kind of beach or are avoiding any kind of public contact. Moreover, the hotels and the resorts of Kerala are informing the government authorities as soon as their foreign guests are checking in their hotels.
The guest is put in quarantine for 14 days in a hotel. The tourism sector of Kerala would suffer a loss of 24971 crore rupees from the month of January to September 2020 (Sürücü, Maşlakcı, and Şeşen, 2020). Hence the loss in the earnings has declined with the arrival of the foreign tourists. This loss in earning is estimated at 5274 crore rupees. Again in the domestic front the amount of loss is 19, 697 crore.
The tourism sector of Kerala has rebounded strongly in the year 2019 after the floods of the year 2018 which witnesses a growth of 8.52% with the arrival of foreigners. The growth of the arrival of tourist in Kerala is 17.81%. The foreign and domestic exchange in earning in the tourism sector of Kerala in the year 2019 is Rs 24785.62 crore and Rs. 10271.06 crore (Mkono, 2019).
The Kochi in Kerala is reviving at its own path past the stage of lockdown. However, due to the Covid 19 cases there is a spurting of more cases and several tourists are avoiding travelling too the “tourists locations” in the state (Spasojevic, Lohmann and Scott, 2017).
However, after this lockdown phase the tourism sector of Kerala is trying to revive but tourists are not coming as the positive cases of Covid 19 are increasing day by day. There are strong chances of lockdown being imposed due to rising cases of Covid 19. Hence, there are chances that the Covid restriction would curb the cases of positive Covid 19 (Alegria, 2017).
The leaders and the policy makers are becoming smaller and is affecting the business and considering redesigning of the strategies, branding and positioning. Hence, there is a need that leaders should have a clear vision and sufficient expertise of the market.
There are options for reorientation and differentiation. Painting, climbing, biking, nature and events, learning, outdoor recreation are the facilities that are offered to the tourists of Kerala. “Leadership is ideally both being inspirational and getting results”.
These are the elements of the Participative Leadership that help in implementing and determining the transformations and visions. It is important for understanding the perceptions of local operators and community for the acceptance of tourism activities (Koo, Mendes-Filho and Buhalis, 2019). The growth management of tourism is based on the values of the members of the community knowledge and members of the experts and thus offering solutions for providing high quality of life and “sustainable tourist destination”.
Mutual support and shared knowledge are essential to the approach of leadership. Regional collaboration increases the number of attractive destinations at reasonable vicinity. The destinations at Kerala require stimulating, stable and dynamic leadership to the tourists. The leaders should prepare themselves for handling with the potential obstacles with the development of new segments. There are a variety of stakeholders like investors, communities, business, property owners, investors and employees.
The development of the profile of the investor helps in understanding the patterns of expenditure and the behavioral patterns. Changes in the climate are referred to as threats and it serves as a threat to different economies, environment and societies around the world. The changes in the climate are showing impacts on the tourism industry of Kerala.
Through application of participatory and visionary leadership, the tourism could be divided as the reliable and sustainable segments because of the natural surrounding and the resources. The tourism industry of Kerala is being affected by the changing behavior and demands of the state.
There is early inclusion of the community members and various other stakeholders into the process of decision-making for improving the understanding at specific site location and it is important for the development of tourism approaches (Na et al. 2020)
With the increase in the influence of globalization, economic diversion, tourism, and distress have been a popular choice for enhancing the local economies, responding to the environmental and social conditions and striving for new benchmarks. With the changes in the global patterns that are accelerating changes there arises the need for embracing new ways for the creation of sustainable positive change.
Another benefit that is arising in the field of tourism is that the tourism sector is greatly affected through the connection of various patterns of leadership and followers are very important. The charismatic leaders are capable of developing ineffective na defective relationships with their followers. These leaders help in fostering, discouraging, community and civic engagement that are critical to social capital and growth network in various communities.
Hence there is a significant relationship of the leaders in tourism community and there is a need for integrating the role of tourism and building awareness on the theories of leadership in PR actioners and students (Haddoud and Elbaz, 2017).
Leadership is crucial in the achievement of positive outcomes and hence lead to the cultivation of leaders having exceptional kills of leadership. Moreover, the “Destination Marketing Organization” are working tirelessly for improving, promoting and improving the quality of tourism services and products. Hence this study explored the development of effective leadership in the industry of tourism from the current perspective of the industry.
There are three key areas where leadership can be applied to the tourism sector. Firstly the way leaders learned their skills, secondly making of an effective leader, and thirdly on advising the aspiring leaders. The findings of the study show that leaders have learned their skills from their own experiences and from the experience of others.
This study also made the fact exposed that effective leadership can be gained through the combination of various personal skills and business knowledge which includes determination, skills of team building, excellent communication, open mindedness and self-reflection (Alabadi, Sultan and Alkaseer, 2019).
The advice for the leaders who are aspiring is that they are required to be knowledgeable and passionate about the industry and should not fear about the hard work. the findings of the research shows that there is a relationship of individuals with the development of effective styles of leadership (Morrison, 2018).
Leaders should prepare for the potential obstacles that help in the development of segments as there are people from opposing and different interests and there are variety of stakeholders such as policy-makers, communities, property owners, investors and employees.
There is need for the development of the profiles of the visitors and thus understanding the expenditure and the behavioral patterns. Mutual support and shared knowledge are the key requirement s of the approach. The approaches of leadership help in increasing the impact of tourism in Kerala (KOÇ, 2017).
The hospitality industry is self-engaging with people from different geographical locations and from different cultural background. Hence there applying effective theories of leadership there is a need for managing of diversity in the hospitality sector.
However, this can be managed in several ways possible. Hence, leadership and the motivation of the employee ia an effective approach that could be studies. Leadership refers to the willingness and the ability of motivating and leading groups of people (Chen and Wu, 2020). It refers to improving the performance of the team and also articulating the vision for the improvement of the business. Moreover, leadership in any organization plays three different roles that is decisional role, interpersonal role and informational role.
However, playing of these roles requires development of relations with the peers and motivating of subordinates, resolving of conflicts, making of decisions and allocation of resources. Leaders are provided training for managing the cultural diversity in Kerala that loks after the tourism sector.
There should proper training goals with the increase in collaboration with employees for improving the cross-cultural skills and for encouraging the participating the participation of the employees (Rao and Zaidi, 2020).
