Introduction
Depending upon the several aspects and past professional experiences one may arrive at a certain point of life where field experiences are proven more effective than theoretical knowledge. As in this section, it will be described the challenges of a marketing manager, that come into being. Of an individual, there are options when a situation seems a lot different than the assumption and in that context; a theoretical approach is proven more effective.
As per the reflection criteria, the Gibbs reflection model is selected to provide a detailed description of the current scenario. Experiences can pave the pathway for a company as well as an individual if importance on the basic aspects is taken into count for a higher marketing advantage.
Gibbs reflective model
Being a marketing manager, I wish to share my past experiences in the context of explaining Gibbs reflective model. There were challenges faced by me when I was appointed as a marketing manager in a reputed organization and since the beginning, a tremendous amount of responsibilities were laid upon me. In my defense, I can say that I was a novice even though having a prerequisite educational background.
The thing that was clear to me while working in the organization was that prudent knowledge is not enough to handle the pressure and work balance of an institution.
The responsibilities that I have performed over those days in the field were data listing, data analysis, dealing with customers, conducting meetings with staff and clients, managing inventory, delivering management, supply chain management and lots more. There were too many things to do in a day with fewer workforces available to me similar to my field.
People and companies had faith in me and my responsibility is to keep that trust as it was. There will be more discussions on this in the later context but prior to that, a brief of Gibbs reflective model is required to be explained in order to provide support to my actions and find out flaws that can be rectified in the future.
Gibbs reflective model gives an elaborate idea about systematic thinking of previous experiences that have been obtained and utilization of the outcomes in future endeavors. In 1988, a famous psychologist and sociologist of America, Graham Gibbs published his reflective cycle model in his famous book Learning by doing (Truong, 2017).
In this model, he classified the decision-making capabilities of an individual into six divisions. These six steps are description; feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan (Yang et al. 2017). I am going to give a brief overview of the points mentioned above as my experience is closely associated with this method.
Description deals with the elaboration of a situation and it depict a visualization of a situation that has taken place (Sum, 2021). Coming to the explanation of this matter I can say it is more of an elaborate view of a situation that has earlier taken place and describing it is the objective here without any conclusion.
It includes some specific questionnaires and their relevant answers and these are about the situation, time at which the situation has taken place, venue, involvements or participants, the role of the individual who is mentioning the situation, the role of other participants and the result of the action taken place (Di Gregorio et al. 2019). In the context of these questions, I wish to elaborate one by one about a certain situation that I had faced when I was employed as a marketing manager.
There was a time when the orders were at a peak and I was the responsible person to maintain the continuum. But, there were certain mistakes that I had done which could have definitely resulted in the job loss of my fellow colleagues or mine. I was given the records of a bulk order that required to be shipped over the night to a distant place. It needs to check the stocks and inventories, available goods and supply chain management.
I was informed that the order had a high priority and no mistakes could have been afforded due to the huge order quantity. But, on the same night, there was another order list landed on my table. Despite the products being different, the quantity was almost the same. Due to the heavy workload and without previous experience in handling this amount of quantity, I mistakenly passed the order to ship the wrong container to the earlier client.
Everyone believed that I was experienced and checked before passing the order, of which others neglected to check the containers by themselves and the parcel was shipped with the delivery agents. After the delivery, the client called and informed me about the situation, but it cost a lot to the organization for packaging, taxes and shipment.
Feelings are associated with the facts about an individual realization about a situation that has been taken place (Li and Peng, 2018). Feelings about the event, feelings at the time of commencement of the event, after effects, realization from the event, considerations of other people on the event at that time and at the present time or scenario is a major concern here (Hamilton and Sodeman, 2020).
Coming to the case example of mine as mentioned earlier, while passing the order I was confident enough that no mistakes were going to take place, but after the incident, I felt terribly bad and awful as I was proven inefficient in handling the workload. My colleague seemed to have faith in me but after the mishap, inspire of being flattered as per my expectation I faced giggling.
Till today I feel sorry for the incident but one thing that satisfied me is the experience which I have obtained from that failure and since then there is rarely such time when I have overlooked anything important.
Evaluation of a situation deals with the justification of any situation to check the outcomes that is either good or bad (Dressler et al. 2018). It is associated with such questions as good or bad things that may have resulted from the situation, what was the reason behind that, participants contributed to the situation and the contributions that other people make (Sekarwinahyu et al. 2019).
In my scenario, the resulting outcome definitely had bad effects on my business and professional career of mine due to the losses that occurred while it also had well just as it taught me how to focus during adverse situations and avoid mistakes at all costs.
Despite the giggling and controversy that I had faced from some of the staff, there were some people who took my side, understood the situation that I had gone through and helped me to correct the situation and showed me the way, how to avoid this kind of scenarios in future.
The analysis is the stage where an individual deals with a situation and justify oneself and find the loopholes in one’s work and thinking (Sekarwinahyu et al. 2019). Soon after the incident had taken place and after coming to my notice, it definitely shocked me but I remained calm and tried to find out the way to correct the mistakes. Stress working environment, heavy workload, understanding and realization of responsibilities are some inevitable facts which I have dealt with.
The conclusion is the step where justification of the matter after realization takes place and results are listed which can be used in future to tackle similar situations (Dhaliwal et al. 2018). Positivity or negativity, future planning and skills developed from an experience are the summary of all the discussions that have taken place so far (Ahmed, 2019).
One can assume that an adverse situation only brings repentance but it is required to be mentioned that in my case it also brought learning lessons like courage to face a situation, keeping mind calm during an adverse situation along with judgmental capability to justify myself and the nature of others at the time of turmoil.
The action plan is the final stage of the Gibbs reflective model that is mentioned depending upon the future plans to be adopted to tackle a similar situation if occurs in future (Lai, 2019).
The reason is to discuss an action plan at the end is to maintain the quality of work, avoid mistakes, generate better opportunities and keep all the unfavorable situations away. In my case, I wish to make the action plan depending upon the pre-mentioned situation are as follows –
- Keep the focus on work and think before taking any action
- Every corner of a situation needs to be checked and verified not only by me but also by associates to avoid chances of failure
- The reputation of the company and client dealings must be provided with utmost priority and take pre-measured and work in advance to avoid last-minute pressure
- Improve technical and theoretical knowledge on the traditional methods as well as on the experimental facts of which new ways to recover from an adverse situation can be adopted
Conclusion
In most cases, people become too much dependent upon the supplies instead of believing themselves. All the requirements to do work either managerial or labor are dependent upon the sector where an individual is working for. Management can often be challenging as mentioned in the above context, but there are definitely ways to perform exceptionally and increase the productivity as well as the reputation of a company.
It is a matter of time when someone needs to focus on the facts to pick up the right tools to eradicate the turmoil from the path. It not only benefits the user but also does well in the social and economical context. A countless number of doing and undoing can be done during academic learning but the options are limited for a person when it comes to the practical field of application.
Gibbs reflective model is chosen for the purpose of depicting the above-mentioned sensation has definitely a reason. This model is very flexible and can be put into any situation to determine the desired outcome. Therefore all the steps are mentioned with an example which is a personal review but the field of applications and learning outcomes of it are diverse.
