Agriculture and farming are related to the UK for a thousand years. As the population increases the demand for people also increases so the growing population needs the crop to feed them adequately. Without using the technology, the entire nation cannot get the perfect shape of crops and animal products more shortly. However, in the 18th century the process of the horse-drawn seed which is making a farmer more productive as well as labor-intensive in the field of work.

Despite having skilled farmers and suitable factors for agriculture the earnings were relatively low due to high pricing of land and shortage of farmland. This was a cardinal reason for the de-motivation for the youngsters who could have joined the farming business. As mentioned by Sekaran et al. (2020), moving towards organic farming, the United Kingdom tried to sustain profits and diversifying the conventional ways of farming to encourage people. The government continues to spread awareness regarding the new technologies incorporated in farming for better yield and fertile soil.

Application of technology in the agricultural sector

The application of technology in the development of agriculture is most important as the share of agriculture is the essential source of revenue for the economy as well as livelihood. As per the view of Singh et al. (2020), technology can be used as a tool for scientific activities for the practical uses of technology to get better facilities. It can be used as the reduction of the labor-intensive which is required to the field.

Technology plays an important role in the diversification of agriculture in modern days. The advancements in farming have gone far in a different way than the old conventional ways incorporating sensors, machines and information technology. As mentioned by Karimi et al. (2018), the need for the advancements was for precision in agriculture allowing it to be more profitable and efficient towards maintaining soil fertility and environmental safety. The main focus of technology inclusion is to use minimum quantities targeting large areas which cannot be maintained manually. The benefits of technology are crop productivity, minimized use of chemical fertilizers, better ecosystem maintenance and increased safety of workers.

The agricultural industry with technological advancements in the country provides with research and development in different sectors and work on updates of the devices used. As stated by Pandey (2017), employing technology helps economically with no or less disruption to the existing ways by assisting and instructing farmers for using the tools. Sustainable agriculture practices protect the environment and help to expand natural resources by enhancing the quality of life for farm families. Emerging technologies for methods used for sustainable farming are:

Bioenergy: An integrated process of combining research, farmers and private entities bioenergy creates new economic ways of farming. Encompassing all forms of renewable energy, the method helps in deriving energy from biological sources of wood, plant remains, animal remains and several others, helping in keeping the land fertile.

Biotechnology: The method of biotechnology uses biological processes for developing technologies to address farming issues to produce enough food, preventing pests and safeguard the environment. As mentioned by Raman (2017), biotech benefits people in areas of improving the nutritional value of food, lowering the prices of food and minimize the use of harmful pesticides. The additional benefit of improving the biofuel potential of plants is done by the maximization of a plant’s ability to convert energy.

Nanotechnology: This method comprises the information of engineering products at a molecular and atomic level. The detailed study of threats at the molecular level benefits in identifying the capabilities to produce advances regarding agriculture. This involves food safety and cost-effectiveness in the arena of agriculture by identifying harmful pathogens and creates improved digestibility, better nutrient content and taste. As mentioned by Pandey (2017), there have been introductions of smart systems which allow real-time monitoring of food systems including medicines and nutrient content in food. These systems are introduced by robotic technologies, providing greater control over production and distribution (Wang et al., 2019).

Benefits of implementing technology in the agricultural sector

There are some advantages of applying technology in the agricultural industry. Such as reducing the time of a farmer they can fertilize a crop in a very shorter time and reduce the stress of a farmer. As per the view of Kamilaris et al. (2019), the standard of living increases as the increase’s advancement of technology in agriculture. The quality of life also increases as the industry. It also helps the stages of packaging as well as marketing strategies. Technology in agriculture can also reduce the stress of a farmer it can increase yield.  The advancement of technology can reduce the use of water also as it increases the high rate of crops and also productivity of a farmer. The farmer will also be efficient as the technology is implemented in the agricultural sector.

5. Methodology

5.1 Research philosophy

This research would include positivism philosophy and deductive approach for getting research objective. The deductive approach removes resources with ambiguity of language barriers, time constraint and other issues making the study authentic and reliable. A positivist approach helps in setting the study by deeply analyzing the results based on the measures taken and confines the result in a certain set of regulations needed. Positivism, stating the science as the only authentic way of gaining knowledge objectifying factual orientation of a study authenticates the validity of the same.

5.2 Data collection method

Data collection procedure is one of the most important aspect in research process. In this research work, secondary data collection would be selected over primary one. Reason behind gathering secondary data is to explore varied range of data from different sources which would enrich the research process (Singhand Tilak, 2020). Varied range of reports from different agricultural institutes, government sources would be considered as the source of key information. Despite this different articles and governmental sites would be considered as major source of information.

5.3 Search engine

Google Scholar, ProQuest and different governmental website would be considered as major search engines for collecting this varied range of secondary sources. Any kind of blog information, Wikipedia, Investopedia would be excluded and mostly reliable sources from governmental site would be included within this research work. Some key terms such as “technical improvement in agricultural industry”, “name of technology used in modern agriculture” need to be used for gathering relevant sources (Kumarand Ilango, 2018). All articles beyond of 5 years would be discarded and only current articles would be taken for further research work.

5.4 Data analysis method

In order to analyse the gathered secondary information, qualitative analysis would be utilised which would provide a systematic review of several governmental websites, articles properly. Qualitative data allows the researcher to be more spectacular about the investigated areas incorporating the researcher’s intuition, making the study a content generator. The use of qualitative research provides specific insights to an organization with an open end. This research analysis method helps in exploring large areas of development and also help to understand technological sequence since past (Pandey, 2017).

5.5 Ethical consideration

All research ethics and etiquettes would be thoroughly covered in this research method. It would be ensured that no controversial information would be placed within research study that might violate the integrity of paper. All information would be accurately placed in paper and no manipulation of data would be done. Along with this, confidentiality of sources would be maintained and it would be ensured that all this information would only be used for research purpose.

6. Conclusion

The report discusses how agriculture plays a vital role in the economy in different areas. It discusses how to improve the agricultural industry to increase farming rapidly in smarter ways.  Discussions are done regarding the different methods of application of modern technological farming. The need for technological advancements incorporated in agriculture has however increased for sustained development of the sector.  The report deals with the major issues faced by farmers and how technology helped them and the economy as well to thrive. The shortcomings of existing methods are discussed and recommendations are given for the same regarding the technological advancements made.

7. Recommendations

Despite technological advancements in the field of agriculture, there have been shortcomings in the existing technologies. The advancements in the addition of technology to the conventional ways of farming can be upgraded as:

  • The elimination of ecological balance in the environment and soil can be avoided by the rotational cropping technique maintaining the nutrient content and fertility of the soil (Karimi et al.2018).
  • Use of robotic and aerial advancements for better run time based on rising and leveling run time heads and use of proper nozzles and by measuring soil moisture.
  • The method of preparing the soil for sowing the seeds can modify the physical and chemical properties of the soil by cutting, mixing and loosening it. As mentioned by Rahmannet al. (2017), tillage can be advanced by reducing soil compaction and growing cover crops which can loosen the soil on harvesting.
  • The genetic mutilation of the crops can be advanced by preserving the cultural diversity of the crop. As per the views of Raman (2017), integration of conservation in mutating a species provides food security on the biodiversity by providing nesting areas for pollinators and an increase in organic matter.
  • The use of organic fertilizers and compost is a better way to deal with soil fertility and food security with the conservation of environment.
