Assignment Sample on Language Barriers and Their Effect on the Provision of Care to Inpatient Service Users
Introduction
The language barriers in healthcare services is one of the noticeable problems that gives a huge impact on providing healthcare services. In the UK, a diverse health care system has been presented where patients from different parts of the world come here to avail better health care services. Sometimes, it has been seen that people with less English proficiency cannot communicate with nurses to make them understand the actual problem. In mental health care services, this is very important to do proper interactions to get satisfactory treatment and avoid medication errors. In this research proposal, the impact of language barriers on the provision to care for inpatient services users will be analysed from the experience of nurses to do further research on this topic in the near future.
Background
There is a huge risk of misunderstanding from both sides. In the UK, English is the main language for doing interactions; hence, this is very important for both patient parties and nurses to have a decent knowledge of this language. Patients with limited English proficiency cannot understand their problems sometimes and be misdiagnosed and mistreated with wrong medications (De Moissac and Bowen, 2019).
Language barriers are a vital problem that invade the patients to explain their issues and nurses to understand those details. In the case of mental health services, it is not even possible to appoint a professional interpreter to mitigate the gap of language barriers. People dealing with mental health issues do not want their problems are disclosed to others. The nurses has to face complexities while dealing with patients with limited English proficiency (Watts et al. 2021). According to their perspective, this s very tough to do an effective communication and understand the problem of the patient, if there is any kind of communication gap due to language problem. Communication gap often leads to mistreatment and misdiagnosis of the patients (Watts et al. 2021). Because of that, This miss diagnosis also creates medication error. According the nurses of UK national hospitals, People coming from diffferent multicultural background often face problem regarding taking appointments or getting treated (Huot et al. 2019). As a result, the nurses can not do satisfactory treatment of the patient. Even, in their opinion, some patients also feel anxious and stressed in the hospitals. Therefore, this is major responsibilities of the nurses to make the patients comfortable and relaxed while giving them inpatients services. In this case, language barriers create a gap that invades them to give person centered care. In this phase, three major portions have been considered such as multicultural linguistic diversity, the effect of language barrier and taking help of the interpreters. Multicultural atmosphere and the effect of language barrier have been discussed previously. Taking the help of interpreters is going to be discussed by bringing light on various aspects.
In this scenario, maintaining privacy and confidentiality are compromised by hiring a professional interpreter. In addition to that, there is an additional charge for appointing professional interpreters. Even, taking assistance of professional interpreters cannot be fully satisfactory and gives uncertainty about explaining actual issues (Guillouet et al. 2021). The process is not smooth at all to taking the aid of professional interpreters. Hence, this can be considered that, language barrier is the main problem that needs to be settled down for better provision of care for patients.
Research aim:
The aim of this research proposal is to evaluate the impact of language barriers on the provision for care of inpatient services within mental health services from the experience of nurses.
Research objectives:
- To evaluate the effect of language barriers to bring light on actual issues
- To analyze the impact of the language barriers on practicing person centered approaches in nursing care
- To explore the area of examining methodologies for better person centered care.
Research questions
- What are the impacts of language barriers in mental health care services in the UK?
- What is the effect of language barriers in giving person centered care to patients?
- How can methodologies examine minute details to improve the quality of person-centered care?
Methodology
Design
In this research proposal, the researcher will take the help of descriptive research design that will help him to analyze the minute details of the language barriers issues in terms of giving person centered health care services in nursing (Kohlenberger et al. 2019). In fact, the descriptive research design will also allow the researcher to do this research without giving any restrictions or boundaries. In this scenario, the researcher will execute a primary qualitative descriptive approach that will help him to get the personal experiences of the participants and portray an actual scenario.
Methods of data collection:
The data collection method is one of the crucial factors to proceed with a further research proposal. In this research proposal, the researcher will choose descriptive research design and deductive research approach to collect the data. The deductive research approach will make it easier for the researcher to do scientific investigations on a pragmatic basis (Ali et al. 2018). In addition to that, the researcher will also focus on choosing a primary qualitative data collection method by executing a survey for analyzing perspective and opinions from others. The researcher will execute a survey on 51 participants consisting of 26 female and 25 male nurses in mental health care service. The researcher will also think of taking interviews of the health care supervisors to evaluate the current issues regarding language barriers that they are dealing with. In order to take the interview, the researcher will choose 5 participants and record their opinions
Sampling
In order to analyze the actual scenario, the researcher is going to execute a survey to get in depth knowledge from their perspectives and experiences. The researcher will also maintain confidentiality and accountability while taking their opinions. In this case, the researcher will take 51 nurses consisting of 26 female and 25 males in order to evaluate their experiences and perspectives. The researcher will also consider taking nurses whose experience ranges from 2-20 years. The researcher will also provide a sheet where the aim, objectives and areas of research will be provided to the participants. This primary qualitative approach will help the researcher to get information from practical experiences, which is fruitful for further research.
Data analysis
The researcher will choose secondary thematic analysis in order to get in- depth knowledge about the findings. The researcher will establish some themes and do a detailed analysis to get knowledge about those research areas. The researcher will gather up all the information from surveys and interviews involving the nurses, supervisors. Apart from that, the researcher will also take the advice from the human resources to know about linguistic diversity and multicultural work atmosphere in the health care sectors. The researcher will establish the themes based on the effect of the language barrier, multiculturalism and consideration of professional interpreters.
Ethics
The Researcher needs to maintain some ethical principles to avoid unethical practices. The researcher should abide by the confidentiality and privacy of the participants. In fact, in order to access legal information of healthcare sectors the researcher needs to take official permission from the authority. The researcher also needs to abide by all the principles of Data Protection Act 1998, to avoid data breach issues (Lipovec, 2021).
Variability and reliability
The researcher needs to ensure accountability, credibility, and conformability to make the research paper more trustworthy. In order to do so the researcher needs to adapt some strategies such as “member checking, triangulation and peer debriefing’’with the members to evaluate the minute details in an effective way. In fact, the researcher should consider more variables and enriching measurable techniques and avoid any kind of bias in sampling.
Dissemination:
Thematic data analysis
The researcher will establish some themes in order to evaluate the issues regarding language barrier and miss communication. The thematic approach will also help to get into the core factors of the research topic.
Theme 1: multiculturalism and linguistic diversity
It has been identified that, in the UK, linguistically diverse health care systems have been represented where people from non-western countries or migrants from European countries come to seek medical help. In this situation, the nurses have to work in a multicultural atmosphere where language barrier is the biggest problem (Huot et al. 2019). Language barriers also somehow create miscommunication between nurse and patient, which prevents the nurse from giving person centered care to patients. In this case, of mental health services, this is very important to do proper communication so that, the nurse can understand actual issues and give proper medication (Squires, 2018). This language barriers results in mismanagement of mistreatment given by health care authorities.
Theme 2: effect of language barrier
There are huge effects of language barriers, which result in mismanagement and medication errors. Language barriers also do not allow both patient parties and nurse to make an effective communication so that the nurse can analyze the actual problem. In the case of mental health care services, it is very important for the health care service providers to acknowledge the mental health issues of the patient as this needs effective interactive sessions just to understand the problem (Watts et al. 2021). In order to give a person-centered care to patients to reduce their anxiety, it is also very important to communicate with them. A person with limited English proficiency cannot be able to explain the situations that results in misdiagnosis. Hence, the treatment is not satisfactory for both patient and nurses.
Theme 3: taking help of interpreters
The idea of taking help of interpreter’s is not worthy it at all. Appointing professional interpreters is expensive and this is not going to solve the communication gap fully. In mental health care sectors, privacy should be maintained between patients and nurses (Guillouet et al. 2021). Hiring an interpreter also raises questions on maintaining privacy. However, this can be said, appointing interpreters can partially solve the problem of filling the communication gap but is not helpful for long terms.
Conclusion
In this research proposal, the researcher will do research on the effect of language barrier on provision of care to patients and service users with limited English proficiency. The researcher has evaluated that, this is very problematic for people from non-western countries and migrants from European countries. In order to get information, the researcher has talked about implementing descriptive research design and deductive research approaches. In addition to that, the researcher will also execute surveys with 51 participants consisting male and female nurses with different experience. The researcher will also consider taking interviews from supervisors to get their views and opinions. This is very problematic for nurses to comprehend the actual issues the patients deal with because of language barriers. In this case, the researcher has established some themes to justify the findings.
