Article date: 23rd February 2020
Summarization
The article “Corporate leaders should show a little human kindness”, published in Financial Times on February 23, 2020 had dropped the spotlight on a global inequality issue faced now and then by an employee through his employer. The article addresses how misconduct surpassed as the top reason for forced chief executive departures at the global companies (as somewhere held guilty under #MeToo scandals, while others were comfortable being paid a thousand times more than their employees). The past research studies undertaken indicate that narcissists are more likely to be elected as leaders or a one on the top of the scoreboard or a person with the lowest emotional score. Though the above research studies have indicated a true focal point that has been followed for years, yet the self-centered leaders fail to address the sustainability challenges. There is a requirement for leaders who instead of “sympathy” focus on “empathy”, who instead of putting their opinion ahead, puts a collective opinion of all the members of the organization. The person with the above opinion sustains empathy, compassion, honesty, and humility, which are quite rare attributes that can boost you to the top of the organization. And today, the approach used to elect the leader is quite contrary to this, where these qualities are neglected (Financial Times, 2020).
To reduce this gap the article has some suggestive ideas such as: First, the corporate boards at the time of electing leaders apart from considering their ability to execute and deliver must also consider their ability to demonstrate honesty, humility, and compassion. Second, the regulators must consider certification requirements from CEOs. Like doctors, CEOs should be licensed to practice: live are at stake. The reason behind this is that the role of the leader directly impacts the lives of the people in the workplace. The article finishes up on the note that given the profundity of twofold atmosphere and disparity emergency confronted, and the broadness of the change that needs to happen this decade, rethinking the administration model is just the basic way for one’s endurance in the organization.
Importance of the article to the leadership and management
The article highlighted the main reason for the departure of many brilliant and smart employees from the organization as there is a quote:
“People don’t change their jobs, instead they change their managers”
The above quote emphasis on the employees who are not willing to change their jobs, but are compelled by the behavior of their leaders and resultant they quit. This “quit” is not their failure, instead, it is their self-respect that has been tested to the limits (Soon et al, 2019). No one wants to be part of the organization where they have to act as the puppet at the terms of their boss. The success of the organization apart from depending on the profit numbers also depends upon the efficiency of its people. An efficient leader is the foremost pillar of the organization, who considers all with equality. He doesn’t discriminate one based on position and considers everyone as the core member of the organization and their suggestions valuable. He doesn’t elect one only based on the scoreboard and creamy layer colleges instead check them at the grassroots level i.e. on the job training. He considers no one is born trained for a job, so provide one with effective training too, such as to unveil there hidden innovation and ideas. Further, employees can only act efficient towards work, when they are provided with a compatible environment, where their opinion is not judged but is welcomed and discussed upon. A friendly and compassionate environment in the organization only depends on the interactive approach adopted by its leader, where everyone is provided with equal opportunity. The above article has provided certain suggestive ideas to elect an efficient leader. An organization with an empathic leader and efficient employee acts as the center for excellence, where practices are taken up to make one better person by sighting them with different opinions, knowledge, and training.
Example of a good leader
CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella believes that innovation comes from having a deep sense of empathy. During the keynote meeting at the Adobe Summit 2019 in Las Vegas, Nadella said organizations ought to enable workers with the best apparatuses to have pride in their specialties. He expressed until this is done, it will be difficult to continue with the business change venture.
