Introduction
Technological advancement assisting organisations to adapt to new and effective digital channels helps in developing opportunities in performance improvement. It essentially includes utilisation of digital channels for workflow management, collaboration opportunities by using cloud technologies to drive operations. This study has focused on critically evaluating change needs in Tata Motors and associated opportunities while including a digital agility model for understanding new emerging technologies important for this organisation. Further, recommendations for developing digital ready culture as well as effective leadership activities would be necessary for streamlining of digital disruptions opportunities for Tata Motors.
Task 1: Change Analysis and Opportunities
Overview of Tata Motors
“Tata Motors Limited” the India’s leading automobile manufacturing companies incorporated with extensive range of integrated, e-mobility solution and smart product ranges in its business portfolio. Bringing new-age mobility services within an extensive reach is worth US $37 billion and offerings across commercial cars, passenger cars and electric vehicles (TATAMOTORS, 2022). This company focuses on introducing engineering and tech enabled automotive solutions to bring the future mobility closure. The concerned automobile manufacturing company is pioneering India’s Electric vehicle transitions and measures considerable advantages in one of the leading positions into the fastest growing automotive market within the global perspectives.
Based on a report of “Economic Times”, Tata Motors reported consolidated net profit ofRs 3,043 crore in the third quarter ended of December 31, 2022. Tata Motors is also postulated robust sales across the market (ECONOMICTIMES.INDIATIMES, 2023). However, due to sudden disruption in supply chain operations, this company reported potential net loss of Rs 1451 coerce in October to December 2021. On the parallel note, based on performance review, Tata Motors is involved in developing resilient performance during the on-going pandemic situations. Technology based business operations like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in supply chain operations guided this company to fulfil robust demand and growing traction within the emerging segment of business (TATAMOTORS, 2021). Resilient performance and operational activities of Tata Motors has positively impacted on enhancement of core business products along with services within industrial support.
Three organisational areas impacted by digital disruptions
Supply chain disruptions in Tata Motors caused by lockdown period in China
Amidst of COVID-19 pandemic had adversely impacted on the supply chain network of Tata Motors Limited by which suppliers are unable to deliver products as per demands. In relation to this, unavailability of required resources, and raw materials in supply chain network, Tata Motors faced potential disruption in management of semiconductors in business operations (TIMESOFINDIA, 2022). Recent lockdown in major parts of China, Tata Motors failed to supply critical parts of cars which negatively impacted the overall production process in China.
Cutting down production in UK factors due to global shortage of essential sources
After the on-going pandemic situation, potential disruption in availability of raw materials including computer chips, Tata Motors faced potential difficulties in production of Jaguar Land Rover. In UK factories, Tata Motors Limited has a potential struggle to maintain the source of semiconductors and computer chips in production of Jaguar Land Rover (THEGUARDIAN, 2022). This was negatively impacted on cutting down the production of these cars at factories in Solihull and Halewood between January and End of March 2022. It has already been reported by Tata Motors that production of cars in UK was 69,524 which is considerably down by 48% in 2022 as compared to the previous year’s production process. Therefore, care makers related to Tata Motors faced lower demand in UK and failing living standards.
Delay of production in post-Brexit auto industry trend within UK
Tata Motors owned Jaguar Land Rover to make a potential return of profit amid an overall gloomy outlook for global automobile sectors following the post Brexit situation. After acquiring Jaguar by Tata Motor, Tata Group posted strong revenue of £6.4 billion in the quarter ending December 2019 and made 2.8% of hike in next year (NDIAGLOBALBUSINESS, 2020). However, during the post-Brexit situation, overall production of Tata motors dropped by 14.2% in the last least of 2020 which was attributed to multiple factors. It has negatively impacted on weakened customer’s satisfaction level and reduced business confidence as well.
Key opportunities available for CIO for successful digital transformation
Analysis of three challenges such as supply chain disruptions, cutting down production prices and delay of production due to semiconductor shortages, CIO of Tata Motors would need to optimize leadership through innovation. For instance, Tata Motors delivered a comprehensive “Business Agility Plan” to navigate demand as well as supply challenges issues in COVID-19 situation (TATAMOTORS, 2022). 89.9% of spectacular sales validates in the innovation product segment which ensures fair allocation of semiconductor and fulfill demands of productions effectively. Innovation and customer centric business model was introduced by this company to offer industry-leading performance and attain strong positions in competitive markets.

Hyperawareness is considered as an ability of a company to detect and monitor changes in its existing business environment. Maintaining hyper awareness in evolutionary architecture, Tata Motors can manage its technology and business evolution with TML digital components and enterprise systems (Tatamotors, 2022).

Managing hyper awareness in business performance management guides organisations to undertake potential actions to avail opportunities in matters of risk factors and threats. As per views of Acciarini et al. (2021), sudden restrictions in physical operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic situations in 2020 has adversely impacted on increasing digital economy from 4.5% in 2019 to 15.5% in 2020. In relation to this, growth of digital economy suppressed new strategic approaches of Tata Motors to set a single and clear vision to avail success as a creator of the most desired luxury vehicle company. A soaring of hyper awareness among organisations related to customer purchasing decisions towards digital platforms along with shopping activities. Considering hyper awareness activities towards digital transformation revealed application of AMT technology used by Tata Motors in Bus to initiate a powerful new generation of engine (TATAMOTORS, 2022). Therefore, Tata Motors has actively worked on innovation in matters of hyper awareness activities that would likely enhance opportunities in digital transformations.
Make Informed Decisions
In Tata Motors, informed decisions by introducing Fleet Edge solutions for its vehicle management systems can create advantages for heavy and medium vehicles. Telematics Control Unit tracks and monitors real time fuel efficiency, vehicle health and trace driving behaviours (Timesofindia, 2020).
Likewise, based on make informed decisions, Tata Motors has decided to turned around “New Forever” content in business process to initiate new journey in generation of electric vehicles (THE ECONOMIC TIMES, 2023). In this regard, annual market share in 2022 was 12.15% which is higher than 8.27% in 2021. On the parallel note, 360-turned around initiative in passenger vehicles increased domestic sales surged by 82% in the current financial years. Therefore, making informed decisions in business processes would positively impact enhancing opportunities in maintenance of business operational resilience.
Execute Fast
Strong transformation improves measurements in controlling business continuity endeavours that can strengthen the atmosphere for customers and target market based opportunities (Investors.tatamotors, 2021). Cost optimization, new technology driven and stylish design can help this business to connect with different consumers and maintain the execution procedures in a fast manner. Adapting process, apple and capability of organisational culture involves embracing the digitalisation process that defines the concept of “Execute fast” in business operation management.
2.2 Implementation of new technology trends for future market needs
Machine learning
Partnership with Microsoft Azure helps Tata Motors to enhance safe, fun and productive experiences with the vehicles for consumers. Microsoft machine learning technologies improve automation procedures that can help in connecting services with Microsoft cloud as advanced analytics (Tatamotors, 2017). It can help in improving supporting activities through which vehicle centric services and external points of interest can be maintained depending on requirements. Increasing safety and delivering optimised solutions can also give the opportunity to Tata Motors to improve their location based opportunities and control automobile based functions.
Internet of Things
IoT platform for Tata Motors helps in improving scalability and higher performance based operations and presents Tata Elxsi to perform transportation and automotive operations. It can assist in bringing domain experiences and develop their range of electric, passenger and commercial vehicle management operations (Tataelxsi, 2020). Cloud native approach can also give the opportunity to Tata Motors to enable innovation in consumer experiences that can lead to success for this business.
Artificial Intelligence
Tata Elxsi’s cloud based Connected Vehicle based platform helps in managing automotive based performance and improve data driven business activities. AI in Tata Motors can also give the way of handling in-vehicle connectivity and electrification based operations (Tataelxsi, 2020). In this way, safety and better experience based operations can create advantages in developing user experiences depending on current digital based situations.
Virtual/Augmented Reality

Development of a digitally ready organisational culture, Tata Motors would be required to incorporate customer’s needs and requirements at its priority to enhance sales effectiveness. As narrated by Morze and Strutynska (2021), primary reason for digital disruptions in an organisation was identified as customer needs shifting. This helps businesses to enhance their operational effectiveness as well as improvement of organisational opportunities to meet customer’s demands. In the context of Tata Motors, use of advanced technologies such as “Machine learning, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual/Augmented Reality” would be beneficial for improving technological intervention in customer management. This would be beneficial for Tata Motors to incorporate skilled employees who can deliberately manage overall digital disruption activities as well as enhance overall quality and efficiency in management of greater approaches of organisational performance improvement. This would require Tata Motors to focus on improvement of its technological leadership and human capital resources would be essential for managing collaborative approaches of managing digital disruption and becoming digital champions. As observed by Ghobakhlooet al. (2021), increasing individual skills and knowledge develop collaborative aspects in business operational streamlining. Task 4: Developing Digital Leadership
4.1 Application of Goleman’s leadership styles
Adhering to informed decision making functions are integral attributes facilitating operational as well as organisational transformation under any emergency situations. Eisman et al. (2020) stated that in the growth of the digital economy, organisations focus on economic considerations that influence implementation of evidence-based innovative approaches in business processes. It can help this business to incorporate digital solutions to enhance flexibility in business performance to improve productivity operations. Goleman’s leadership style consists of coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching leadership that helps to improve leadership approaches in organisations. Similarly for Tata, it can be recommended that development of business performance would be possible by taking the help of Goleman’s leadership styles.
4.2 Justification of Goleman’s leadership style in relation to Tata Motors
The higher authority and leaders of Tata Motors have decided to implement a strategic business agility plan in addressing short and long term challenges and modifying its innovative mobility based solutions. Organisations functioning in fluctuation of social and economic scenarios are involved in enhancing hyperawareness aspects to understand the reason behind existing challenges. As Goleman’s leadership initiates to develop leadership approaches in organisation and in this regard, it can be justified that application of democratic leadership styles would be supportive for Tata Motors to operate well in competitive markets.
4.3 Application of Grow Model
Application of GROW Model would initiate to identify the goal focusing on reality, presenting options followed by what to do next. In case of Tata Motors too, implementation of GROW Model would be suitable as it would help in improving goal identification. Based on goal identification, it would help Tata Motors on which further operations would evolve and would be able to run its business smooth.
Conclusion
From this study, it can be concluded that Tata Motors including advanced technologies has helped in increasing its demand for its products and services. This has positively assisted this organisation to incorporate advanced technologies such as “Machine learning, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual/ Augmented Reality” for operational performance improvement activities. Further, Tata Motors effectively using emerging technologies to enhance their customer focus, managing collaboration and innovation opportunities would be beneficial for management of digital disruptions for operational improvement.
