Lean Manufacturing Assignment Sample

1. Introduction

The aim of this particular presentation is to develop a critical understanding on owners seven waste. The following sections of the presentation is going to identify with a specific video and helping understanding three different types of waste an articulate them effectively. It is also by providing possible solutions for elimination of the identified ways that the presentation is going to develop a few solution improvements in relation to the chosen video content.  The presentation aims to summaries with an overall conclusion of the knowledge and understanding attained from the video and the discussion.

2. Summary of the seven wastes

The seven wastes are based on the lean theory that describes the seven predominant areas where one can identify with different Muda activities or lean waste activities. The seven wastes of lean are related to

  • inventory
  • waiting
  • defects
  • over production
  • motion
  • transportation
  • and over processing.

Transportation wastes predominantly relate to moving of resources that does not add value to any product or the business (Ramkumar et al., 2019). The inventory wastes related to excessive inventory that is often a result for an organization to experience an increase in storage and deprivation costs.  The motion waste involves the movement of employees and machinery’s which do not add value to the production and manufacturing process.  Waiting is an easily recognizable waste that relates to delays and waiting for products or humans to work effectively (Sutrisno et al., 2018). Over production is related to producing more while exceeding customer demands that leads to additional costs in the business.  Over processing is a type of waste that refers to commitment towards work that does not bring additional value to the business or to the products and services. Defects are the reworks that can often worse the quality of product identify with defective work and bring delays to the entire production process costing valuable time (Chahal and Sharma, 2019).

As observed from the video of mobile phone case manufacturing one can identify with a plethora of operations that goes one after the other in order to develop the final mobile covers as the ultimate product. In the video the three most notable wastes that are identifies relate to defects, over processing, and waiting.

Firstly in the video one can identify with the amount of time each method or stage of the mobile case manufacturing is taking for which people need to wait for one process to be completed and move to the next. This certainly delays the overall manufacturing process as people are also involved using manually operated hand machines that take a lot of time to wait for the products to reach its final form.

Another waste that is observed in the video relates to over processing.  This type of waste is observed as it is not bringing any additional value to the mobile case covers that are manufactured in the video.  For instance the mobile case is passed through different stages where it is being decorated and simplified into specific shapes and sizes that does not really bring more value to the product nor adds additional benefits to the business.  It certainly increases the business costs and allows the product to go through multiple stages that customers are not willing to pay for.

Lastly defects are the most notable waste that is observed in the video.  It has been noted that nearing the end of the manufacturing process it is shown that manual testing and reworks are performed on each and every product where defects are found manually leading to extra labour manpower costs and time.  It is with the help of a small scissor that small changes are made on the final product of the mobile cases and that defective work is taking valuable time while exploiting labor and tools.

4. Provide possible solutions for eliminating the identified waste you have identified.

Some of the possible solutions in eliminating the identified wastes are related as follows

  • The mobile manufacturing process should follow Agile manufacturing process in swiftly addressing and catering to the market demands by producing exactly what the customers require and not create extra work or customized outlook that the customers are not willing to pay for (Hemal Atha et al., 2021).
  • The mobile manufacturing process can also be done without the different stages of the production process and reduce them down two fewer stages that add more value to the business product.
  • Lastly the reworks can be eradicated from the overall process an all defective products must go to a specific department and zone where automated machines will take over manpower and make needful modifications in the products to eliminate chances of rework.

5. Summaries the Presentation

It is observed from the presentation that the mobile .cover manufacturing process creates a lot of delays and uses extra costs time and labour through the process.  It can be stated that the manufacturing process can be reduced down to fewer steps and completely focus on simple yet strategic design of mobile covers that the customers are paying for an not create extra designs that leads up to higher costs in the business.
