The study critically focuses on the investigation of the relationship between employee motivation and the productivity of Sainsbury’s. Sainsbury is one of the largest chains of supermarkets for everything including groceries to electricals and homewares in the United Kingdom. Through various opportunities and incentives, the company motivates its employees and therefore results in high productivity.
1.2 Problem statement
There are several key issues that arise in the relationship between employee motivation and productivity of the company. The presence of some annoying and intrusive employees does not satisfy the organization and are not motivated at any cost. Therefore, a certain negative impact of demotivated employees results in the high productivity of such organizations as Sainsbury’s.

Motivated employees can help Sainsbury to implement new and innovative business approaches, ideas to achieve their created goals. Management of Sainsbury has hired qualified employees of different cultural backgrounds so that has created easy solutions of problems for employees towards their given job roles.
Employees need to be motivated which helps them to improve their skills and creativity, knowledge regarding their position and job roles within the workplace. Motivation can help the employees to reduce their negative attitude within the workplace that encourages them for efficient and effective performance. In order to improve the performance of employees, Sainsbury can organize motivational trainings, educational events that can increase their willingness and capability (Gomathi and Vishnumoorthy, 2020). Business organizations can improve their financial competitiveness by reducing prices for their existing consumers to increase productivity demands in the market area.
The retail company named Sainsbury can translate their effort into a good communication system and service by increasing productivity to meet customer satisfaction. Productivity helps the company to gain positive feedback from their customers that ensures customers’ loyalty and influences other visitors for purchasing their products (Elvina and Chao, 2019). In order to improve employee performance with healthy investment, Sainsbury has used the daily productivity result to motivate their employees that boost their culture, environment within the workplace. Company can implement incentives or appreciation to motivate their employees in high productivity that sustains business growth and profit in the competitive retail market.

3.3.1 AMO Theory
This retail company Sainsbury has adopted AMO theory that consist of three individual properties Ability, Motivation and opportunity to explain the potential relationship between productivity and employee motivation. In the case of Sainsbury, these three individual components can work independently to build high performance that contributes business growth and success in the international retail industry. AMO theory has determined strengths and weaknesses of employees to increase the ability of individual employees to develop their better understanding regarding workplace issues and resolving solutions. Sainsbury has motivated their employees to improve creativity and knowledge that impact on enhancing productivity to achieve market and customers’ demand (Leijdekkers, 2017). AMO framework has provided many opportunities to Sainsbury employees which attract more growing talents and boost employee engagement within the workplace to increase productivity.
3.3.2 B2C Marketing Theory
Sainsbury has applied Business to Customer Marketing theory (B2C) to improve its business marketing operation in the international retail industry. This theory implements innovative technologies to change their web design and working style for e-commerce business that can improve profit ratio, product optimization and inventory management. Business to Customer Marketing theory has determined entire practices, managing systems and technical uses of Sainsbury to provide good service with fair product quality. Sainsbury has established a modern website design that attracts their customers by ensuring their health and safety in the present scenario (McGreevy et al. 2020). Customers of Sainsbury can access this website through any internet facilitated devices at any moment and purchase their essential products from anywhere. This implementation saves important time for both Sainsbury and customers by recording ordering products with delivery time, location of customers.

Sainsbury has offered their employees incentives and started reward schemes to satisfy them. In order to develop organizational operation and survival effect, Sainsbury has improved its demographic, competitive, civilizing and regulatory factors through employee motivation (Dimri and Chauhan, 2021).
Employee motivation can enhance productivity in an impressive way which helps Sainsbury to meet market and customers’ demand as well as improve competitiveness in the retail industry. This retail company can achieve their productivity expectation through employee motivation that increases engagement within the workplace. Employee motivation can allow workers to collaborate, make their own decisions which ensure their job stability within the organization and enhance their individuals’ performance (Sainsbury et al. 2018). Sainsbury pays equal salaries and incentives to both men and women workers that can retain their employees and attract other employees of competitive firms for joining their workplace. Employee motivation can be beneficial for Sainsbury that builds flexibility and eco-friendly culture within the workplace. Flexible environment and employees can act as motivational tools to improve productivity by resolving expected and unexpected organization risk.

Sainsbury’s achieves high productivity through various employee motivation processes like recognition, financial incentives, training, feedback, career growth choices, and opportunities. Additionally, there are some key advantages of the high organizational production of organizations like Sainsbury’s, as follows.
Benefits for the customers: High organizational production or high productivity always ensures superior product quality and focus on customer satisfaction. High productivity enables more concern for cutting the product price and therefore attracts more and more customers towards the product. (Belgraver and Verwaal, 2018)
Benefits to the organization: The stability of the unit is ensured by the higher organizational production and evokes more profits. In the words of Quesadoet al., 2018, additionally, high productivity provides the entire reputation and prosperity of the industry or organization like Sainsbury’s. As opined by Bezzubchenko (2017), the higher production or the higher sales volumes impact the expansion of the wider marketplace.
Benefits to the country: High productivity of large organizations like Sainbury’sin the United Kingdom, also increased the national wealth and per capita income. As stated by Ge et al., (2018), additionally, the high productivity benefits the nation from various levels through improving the standard of living. Consequently, high productivity helps in greater utilization of the country’s resources and therefore makes several advantages.
Benefits to the employees: The employees are also benefited by the high productivity of the industry through the improvement of the wage structure. Maximum wages also improve the employee’s living standards and improves employee’s job satisfaction and morale. (Brauweileret al., 2019)

Research projects of investigation on employee motivation to increase productivity of Sainsbury in the international retail market are going to be restricted due to facing issues with high purchase value of journals. Lack of resources can ensure burden to explain the literature review widely.

4.1 Research Philosophy
The section explains various key steps with several key activities of the research process in the research program. According to the view of Tian et al. (2018), it can be easily stated that this research work is centered on the two dependent variables that are closely linked with the research work. Therefore, it becomes easy to inspect the relationship between employee motivation and productivity of Sainsbury’s. In this case, positivism philosophy will be used in the study for collecting beneficial, accurate information from respondents. As cited by Schneider (2018), positivism philosophy elaborates the method in the scientific process and has been taken to understand the brief advantages of the relationship. Additionally, the positivism philosophy promotes the internal behavior within the organization, and therefore, the organization can implement various plans for employee motivation.
4.2 Research Approach
The positivism philosophy has been approved for the research work to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity. There is a particular cause for the selection of the philosophy of productivism as the research philosophy in this research work. In the words of Beloor et al. (2017), this positivist philosophy is well structured as well as reliable and it is the reason behind choosing this philosophy. Additionally, the researchers have selected the deductive research approach to analyze the information about the high productivity of the organization. For maintaining several social theories on the basis of scientific investigations, deductive research approaches are considered. The descriptive research design will take to understand the characteristics, categories, current trends, plans for the strong relationship. It is required to understand the trends of the marketplace before making any decision or planning to adopt the strategies. Fundamentally, the researchers will consider a survey on political opinion, demographic data, product definition, employee background. As stated by Barik and Kochar (2017), current research is going through the help of journals, case studies, newspaper reports, observation, and business reports. Descriptive research design relies on hypothetical data, theories, models and helps the researchers to measure the relationship and its impacts.
4.4 Sampling
For the research work, from various resources, sampling has been taken, and based on the exclusive and inclusive criteria, random sampling is considered. PRISMA method and random sampling are taken to understand this relationship and random sampling is taken as the simple method for data collecting. A total of five employees of different hierarchy levels from Sainsbury will be selected in the study. However, random sampling provides the researchers an equal opportunity to share their knowledge and define employment skills, working principles with the behavioral approach of the employees. As opined by Massoudi and Hamdi (2017), additionally, the PRISMA method is the systematic research approach based on the evidence which is selected by the researchers. For improving the systematic review and improving some parts, the PRISMA method is extremely beneficial.
4.5 Data Collection
Data collection methods play significant roles in the development of quality research findings. The study will select primary data collection methods based on interviews of Sainsbury’s employees for understanding their relationships. Primary data collection method through taking multiple data for inspecting the relationship between employee motivation and organization productivity. In the words of Malik (2020), the information related to the employees and their eligibility will be taken to understand the data to create a proper search work. Data collection is one fundamental and essential part of research work that is taken by the researchers. Consideration of interviews will help to understand multiple aspects of the relationships between Sainsbury employees effectively.
4.6 Data Analysis
Research work linked to direct marketing will be on the qualitative analysis of the gathering data. Additionally, various strategies have been implemented according to the collective data from sources and a qualitative research approach is taken by researchers to understand several data for the research work. As cited by Krekel et al. (2019), the interview response of the Sainsbury employees will be evaluated effectively for the development of research findings. Consequently, the qualitative data easily analyzes several numerical data and depends on the ground theory.
4.7 Ethical Consideration
The research has been conducted to increase the knowledge on the given issue through the implementation of several scientific tools. Additionally, the research work is done with the application of integral information of the data collection technique. Ethics is another fundamental approach of the research work that requires considering the values of the large organizations. The current research work is maintained and arranged through transparency, technical tools, and proper data analytic tools. As stated by Padhi (2017), researchers have also gathered several types of data regarding this relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity. Furthermore, the research work has conducted several data of the impacts of the high organizational production with several benefits.
4.8 Summary
In the research work, several data have been collected to differentiate the qualitative data and various key factors have been gathered to formulate the research. Special support has been given to the major factors for supporting the relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity. The current chapter analyses different types of scientific tools for this research work. Qualitative, descriptive, deductive and PRISMA method is used by the research for building the research work.

From the above discussion of the study, it can be concluded that Sainsbury’s has made a strong relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity. The company formulates various plans and strategies in this case like the opportunities, career growth option, training, feedback, recognition with financial incentives. These plans directly and effectively motivate its employees and therefore the organization produces high productivity. Therefore, using several tools and techniques, Sainsbury’s motivates its employees and creates a favorable organizational environment. Additionally, this motivation has made a great impact on organizational productivity and there it benefitted the entire organization. The study has critically discussed these tools and techniques, the impact of motivation as well as several advantages of the strong relationship.
6. Recommendation
There are some recommendations that can help to create a strong relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity in Sainsbury’s.
- i) HRM method for hiring:The company should apply the Human Resource Management method for the hiring process of the employees. Therefore, the organization can select efficient and workers almost from the entire country and it can increase the productivity of the organization. (Bawa, 2017)
- ii) Several opportunities:Through providing several incentives, tickets, vouchers, career growth options the company can motivate its employees. As stated by Bawa (2017), it is another easiest process for motivating the employees and it can also create a friendly and favorable atmosphere. Finally, the organization can focus its plan, trusting the employees through conferences, meetings, and seminars. This process is also recommended for the organization to create a strong relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity.
