Answer 1: Ethical Reasoning
The ethical reasoning from one of the normative ethics theories was applied in doing the case study analyses. The virtue ethics theory was chosen and applied. The virtue ethics theory emphasize in the recognition of virtues that give sense of a virtuous person and good/ honest conduct. This theory do not focus on outcomes and do not judge actions but is concerned with the individual personality and mind set (Crossan et al., 2013). Thus, it signifies a character-based ethics approach and considers an act right or ethical for the action that a virtuous person would take in similar situation. The general principle of this ethical theory is to develop and implement qualities that are considered to be morally good (Annas, 2015). The qualities such as fairness, truthfulness, empathy, trust and self-control are found in virtuous personality. In practice, I consider that the virtue ethics also points towards disregarding non-moral virtues like lying, fraud, cheating, corruption and dishonesty in order to make ethical decisions. Thus, virtual ethics are practical ethics as they provides an individual to ask themselves on what kind of person or moral character development they would like to become through their actions and impact of this decision on other life. I have realized that virtue ethics principle have applicability in today time where it gives opportunity to individuals and business to learn and see their effect of business or household activities ad actions impact on environment such as pollution, climate change etc and can develop abilities, qualities and competencies that shape their moral personalities.
It can be said that virtue ethics principle to develop and implement virtuous qualities can be helpful to guide actions in day to day life situations in the event of ethical dilemma. Here, a person can acquire good qualities as well as give appreciation to development of virtuous habits through practice. In situation of my professional conduct in my family business and in dealing with customers or recommending or selling them product, the virtue ethics principle can guide the action and conduct in not to be dishonest in providing information (dealing with integrity) and dealing fairly with all customers without discriminating them based on their age, gender, race, religion, etc. It can be said that in the situation to avoid misconduct with other persons due to injustice and discrimination the virtue theory can guide the action of an individual and help them to avoid these by adoption of virtues or virtuous person conduct.
Answer 2: Applying a Difficult topic
I propose the topic from week 10 i.e. issues in marketing ethics that I initially found difficult to gain insight and understanding towards it. It was a struggle for me to understand the ethical issues under the concept of marketing. This topic was challenging to learn as it is based on ethics philosophy to be responsible in online and offline advertising and different areas under the marketing effort. The area under discussion of ethics made this topic challenging for me as is involved with subjective judgment about an act or decisions to be considered as either right or wrong. Thus, I can say subjective nature of judgment in ethics on what is wrong and what is right has made the topic difficult to identify with my existing knowledge of marketing to uphold integrity, fairness, and responsibility aspects in marketing. Also, considering the complex nature of marketing activities (Eagle and Dahl, 2015), it was difficult for me to realize what irresponsible and unethical marketing behavior is and how to differentiate it with ethical marketing behavior.
Thus, learning about this challenging topic has developed my perspective to realize the importance of ethical marketing practices in the time of conscious consumerism and well informed customers and with the emergence of big data. This has affected my personal learning and thinking towards modern day marketing practices where still there are deceptive marketing practices being adopted by companies. My personal learning has also been improved in understanding the ethics of bid data where storing of customer data from sources like social media and mobile devices raised ethical dilemma due to lack of consent from the customers. Thus, the ethical framework in my understanding is changing towards cotemporary marketing where existing ethical frameworks are difficult to analyze on what can be done as there is still no wrong or right prescribed in the use of big data analytics.
I can envision that in future workplace situation, I might need to apply the learning from marketing ethics and deal with ethical issues in forming marketing decisions to make certain that I practice fair standard of advertising in my family business. This will be important for the workforce and customers to develop a positive attitude towards the business in developing ethical reputation. In particularly, in micromarketing issue such as price, in making the pricing decision the learning of issues in marketing ethics would be referred and kept in mind so that a strategy of pricing ethics is made and followed so that there is no price wars to make profits as well as there is no chelating of the customers or defrauding of the competitions to sell products and earn profits.
Answer 3: Living up to personal values in the workplace
To live up to my personal values, I consider and intend to put in place measures like awareness and empathy to deal with unethical dilemmas and situation arising in the workplace. The awareness and empathy would be useful to develop innovative thinking so that ethics are maintained and contribute in making me successful in workplace behavior and decision making. In relation to awareness, it can be said that consciousness in workplace will be helpful keep personal values strong so that I not become lost in listening to other individual perspectives and it will also help me in sticking to my own perspective in solving ethical challenge. In addition, the awareness about self will help me give an impression on how my character is and also give me a vision of the person I want to become in my professional life, thus, it will be helpful in my professional development and conduct. The self-awareness will also help me in identifying my personal values (Ugur et al., 2015) that I need to be preserved in my professional life.
At the same time, empathy will be supportive to live up to my personal values of commitment, teamwork and co-operation in the place of work (Pohling et al., 2016). Thus, to be empathic would help in understanding other perspective and concerns and also help in forming agreement and disagreement. The promotion of empathy in workplace will be helpful in making moral judgment in concern of others without considering self-interest.
Thus, awareness and empathy in workplace will guide my personal values and to implement them in my workplace to assesses the task and decisions to be made by me and to judge want action and decision are the correct things for me to take in relation to workplace and their impact on others (self, colleagues, customers and business). These measures will also help in integrating my personal values in my regular work and conversation with my fellow workers to express my perspective and hear others perspective to hold and stay true to my personal values. In addition, awareness about self and workplace factors will help in applying my personal value as a motivation to determine my future character development that will allow me to avoid self-conflict and struggle in my professional journey.
