MMK226175 Ustainable Design and Construction Assignment Sample
1.0 Introduction
Sustainability consultants play roles as a “project manager”, “business developer”, “designer” and also as a house team trainer. Within the construction sector it is required for Sustainability consultants to have required knowledge about building science and energy efficient principles. Daily work of Sustainability consultants has included arranging meetings with stakeholders like developers, engineers, architects and owners. Sustainability consultants help companies and businesses to become more socially and environmentally conscious. Sustainability consultants also have some titles such as eco consultant, environment consultant, green consultant and sustainability advisor. Organizations hire sustainability consultants when they want an advisor to develop their plan.
Caledonian Eco-town is a UK construction industry that wants to establish a future development strategy. This company is based in Glasgow which is looking to grow the company’s portfolio within the international market to develop their reputation in the market. This company will want to establish a floor neighborhood within BedZED (South London).
2.0 Analysis
2.1 Sustainability challenges
Sustainability Consultant needs to be ‘expert’ in their working sector and also require some knowledge about marketing and administration. Sustainability Consultant helps companies to develop but they also deal with some challenges. Consultant has a task to find news customers. Consultant give better service to customers, they share their number with their clients that help them to deal with their clients in future. Consultants do not want to live in insecurity so that they face challenges to find reliable customers that help them to grow their new business.
Relationship between consultant and client is very personal. It requires frequent maintenance in the relationship. Either consultant work or done their work by team in both cases consultant personal reputation is overshadowed.
Consultant mostly charge their times which they give to client and company. It means the value of time is most important for consultants. Some Consultant who work in a small company distrust their times. Consultant spen there lots of time outside of the company this also impacts their personal life. Consultant is also a competitive business. This career helps to make a popular career path. It is very important for Consultant to complete their task at time. Many times become challenging for consultants. Time tracking gives consultants a clear view of what they exactly want to do and for whom.
Consultant has responsibility to record all the details such as phone number, e-mail id, appointment, meetings and also project relegated details such as invoice and quotation. If the Consultant loses the record then it becomes very difficult for the consultant to find all the details about the clients. In the market, demand for professional service is increasing. Customers expect more from consultants, they need good quality of work and fastest direly of their service. Sometimes customers ask for more information about accountability so it is very important for Consultant to have full knowledge about their project.
Clients are more dependent on consultant service so they understand the competition and want to choose service at lower price. So the changing in customer behavior is more challengeable for Consultancy. Consultant does not charge more and receives less profitability. Innovation of new technology helps to do more with less effort. New consultants enter the market with advanced technology so therefore old consultants always need to update them with new technology.
There is some detailed information about construction which. help to understand the process of construction
- The concentration process is making an impact on the environment and it’s becoming the reason for global warming. Construction projects are done in large areas where large numbers are cut. Construction projects generate carbon dioxide and methane in large amounts. It develops the causes of pollution in the environment and also produces large amounts of waste. The outcome products during infrastructure development increase risk to damage the environment.
- Land is a very important recruitment for the construction process. Density refers to the ratio of plant and the given land area for construction. Based on the area of the land, architecture and engineers plan their infrastructure and make designs.
- Development pattern refers to the idea or process through which infrastructure is built. It is followed by the engineer to complete their project. For the construction process three development patterns procedures are followed. These procedures are parallel line, radial line and triangular development.
- Infrastructure refers to built assets such as hospitals, schools, society, houses, and buildings.
- In the field of construction resilience is important to avoid small damages. Resilience refers to the ability for small damages without destroying complete structure. The objective of resilience is to maintain its design, and maintain infrastructure.
- Governance for the construction related to the agency that maintains the structure and leadership. It is the authority of governance to find how the project is directed and whether the construction project follows all the government rules and decisions or not. Project governance has the responsibility to maintain accountability and all the details about the project.
2.2 Three pioneering developments
As encountered all challenges in the field of the sustainable design of the infrastructure and the effective implementation in its construction (Sirin et al 2016). Now with the closed observation analysis of SWOT Analysis of the three pioneering developments that are Freiberg of Germany, Bedzed of the South London, Masdar City of UAE tries to figure out the what are the strengths, what are the weakness, what are the opportunities in that development projects and also what are the possible threats of that developing constructing projects.
FREBERG
The eco-town was built in the Vauban district of Freiburg as a sustainable model district on a location which earlier belonged to the French for their military bases. Its construction began in the year 1998 and became a place of residence in the year 2001 where over 2000 residents moved there. It was one of the first urban development projects based on sustainability principles.
Strength
Freberg’s due to its demographic strength gives it an edge. The Freberg demographic model’s success is due to the direct involvement of the citizens in the town planning, the town has a dynamic plan for the development and consensus among them (Azhar et al 2011). The involvement of the citizen in the land use planning, the budget allocation, forming of technical expert committees, awareness among the public on sustainability and becoming as s stakeholders in local renewable energy sources. All homes are built to consume less carbon and also less emitting of low carbon making their significant contribution on the field of fight against global warming. The fund raised by selling the commercial plot of land to cooperatives, people and small developers covered the cost of land. |
Weakness
Frreberg eco-town was developed on a sustainable basis but it convinced the majority and found difficulties for some people who live in suburbs to get accustomed to the sustainable way of living. The people of town also have to keep updated with renewable technologies as there were huge changes in the field of technology from 1998 to the present. |
Opportunities
With the advancement in the field of renewable sectors, global warmings. There is a need for awareness among the people about the more use of the public transport, cycling, pathways for the people side by side making parking expensive. Making the plans for the development flexible and easily adaptable to accommodate changes over some time. Long term goals of reducing carbon emission are met by helping the other developing urban ecotowns use renewable devices across Germany (Ayer et al 2011). To gain support from the local and national governments.
|
Threats
Initially the cost of the renewable products was high as there was not much technological advance in the renewable sector, aware the people about the sustainable ways of development is quite new and if the people doesn’t support it this development is not possible. |
BEDZED
The Bedzed which is located in south London is the UK first Ecodevelopment and acts as a premier demonstration project in the UK as it is the first UK low carbon residence at the time of its completion in the year 2002-2003.
Strength
The Bedzed model is based on the use of renewable energy as is quite different from the traditional approach of developing a town. This model tries to reduce the carbon emission of the people of the town as their electricity demands are being fulfilled by renewable sources (del Caño et al 2016). Reducing the waste of the people by frequently auditing them. Water treatment system so that the scarcity of the water, developed the pathways. Making people accustomed to renewable sources. The houses of this town have the least dependency on electricity and also try to reduce it. They also developed the renewable electric grid. This will reduce the net emission of CO2 to produce electricity over the years.
|
Weakness
Although it was based on the renewable model/ sustainable model of town developments which differ from that conventional model of the town planning. The overall cost of developing the township is quite high. The budgeting was not properly taken care of which makes the plots of this town quite expensive and may face some decrease in demands of its plots at that time. |
Opportunities
The Bedzed model on its successful implementation has not only created a space for the other constructional developments of township projects to be based on this model by covering the drawback that was there (Pulaski et al 2003). Making the township program to the commercial level so that it is quite affordable to the common people and also to attain the desired results of decreasing the carbon footprints. The Bedzed model also helps the government to frame its policy regarding the environment. So that the overall reduction of carbon emission across the country can be achieved. |
Threats
The extensive use of the expensive renewable products in the developments of the town is quite risky and also if it does not execute well then there might not be any further developments in this sustainable township planning and not the desired results of reduction of carbon emission through township model in England can be achieved. |
MASDAR CITY
After the successful implementation of sustainable energy/ renewable energy in the township projects, the demand for such a township has got the boots and from there the UAE announced to develop its first planned sustainable city and will account for a huge profit demonstration. The construction was started in the year 2008 and was estimated to be complete in 2016 but delayed in constructing it.
Strength
The UAE government has announced that Masdar City will be the zero carbon emission city. According to the UAE this city will facilitate around 40000 residents and 1500 companies making the further developments in the Sustainable development in the design and construction sector attractive. This will make a positive impact on the environment (Hammond et al 2014). Masdar City is a 1483 acre green city which also aims to produce the city with zero waste. The UAE government is also aiming to make Masdar City one of the most energy-efficient cities by effective planning, design, and transportation with sustainability at its base. Masdar City tries to integrate all the aspects of the city,i.e., office and residence of the individual nearby so the need for transportation is minimised. |
Weakness
Masdar City was aimed to develop a zero carbon emission city with minimum or zero waste emission. But the delay in its implementation emerges as its weakness with many might lose involvement with this city and also the UAE government reduced the government’s budget from 22 billion dollars to 19.8 billion dollars has helped to increase the doughnuts of its future potential. |
Opportunities
Masdar City will be seen as a stepping stone in the development of the many cities or the modification of existing cities developments with renewable as their core. This will boost many companies in the development of the latest renewable energy product (Molenaar et al 2010). So that also gives more options to the developer about the use of renewable products. These projects will be necessary for the world to reduce its carbon emission and also attracts huge investment in the upcoming future
|
Threats
As Masdar City delays prolong delays in construction may lose the interest of many investor which are necessary for such a huge project but also a discouragement to many for the further developments in this projects as comparatively a newer field there also a lot of developments is needed for the timely execution of such kinds of projects (Durmisevic et al 2006).

2.3 Locations
The location of suitable specific sites is very beneficial as the core theme of the projects revolves around sustainable developments. This is one of the very basic inputs for the developer. The sites should have suitable renewable energy generation place like solar is the major source of renewable energy at a place then the calculation of solar concentration i.e., the total amount of the solar energy received at a place calculated that the required solar inputs are feasible for the sustainable construction at a place or not means through the solar demands the amounts of the electricity demands that have been fulfilled and generate the profitability in a longer run (Murtagh et al 2016) . Governments across the globe are promoting the use of renewable energy products to reduce carbon emissions and achieve a net-zero carbon emission target as soon as possible. The Government gives various tax rebates and allocated separate funds to the promotion in this sector which is beneficial for the initial funding process. This renewable energy sector has drawn the attention of many investors in this sector as it is a high demand in the upcoming future (Velazquez et al 2005) . The preferable sites should be brownfields as it will save the cost of developing it and as the time as compared to the green fields where there is a need to develop the sites for the commercial use. The sites should be owned but not to be taken on lease. The preferred location should be a place where there is ample sunlight received throughout the year and there is a natural flow of winds, easy availability of water source nearby, a suitable location for the waste management for sustainable developments. All these stated requirements might be difficult to accomplish within the city so a suitable location nearby the city will be preferable. Its infrastructure design and construction is to make with the use of renewable products like solar panels at the roof, use of the solar wall to capture the solar energy, all the offices and the residents should lie in proximity so to reduce the use of the fuels car and the promotion of cycles (Robichaud et al 2011). Separate pathway for walkins. The design of the townships is as per the latest infrastructure design and also all the standard of the ISO: 14000 series regarding the construction is maintained and also during the construction ISO: 27000 standards are followed to ensure the safety of the products and avoid any unnecessary accidents during the construction. As renewable is one of the most important topics for the upcoming future against the fight against global carbon emission. This has drawn the attention of many investors, financial firms, banks in this sector. A suitable proposal to them will not make any difficulties in acquiring the required funds for the projects. Through government incentive programs and ordering renewable products, construction equipment in bulks also allows a discount on its products (Luo et al 2015) . This will reduce the overall cost per house in the towns. The sustainable townships products have gained its popularities over the periods as the increasing awareness amongst the people about the harmful effects of the increasing carbon emission that bought some ecological changes like climate changes, increasing the global earth temperature etc., this increased awareness will create a good demand for the people to switch in this sustainably developed townships.
3.0 Conclusion
Sustainable Design And Construction has a lot of potential for the future as this is the need of the present and has a huge future space to reduce the carbon emission, fight against global warming. Although not enough research on this sector has been done yet, over the years with the increase in sustainable Design and Construction sectors has created space in the future. The effective maintenance of the waste also helps to make the environment greener and cleaner. Sustainable Design and Construction helps the governments to formulate their policies on the reduction of the emission of carbon emissions. Several intensive plans to promote the sustainable Design and Construction sector will create new employment opportunities for the people. It is also beneficial in pollution reduction. Through sustainable development, benefits are observed in the long term as it not only saves the money of the people but also through energy storage and supplies this will create a source of side income to the individual. So the Sustainable Design And Construction will be in high demand in the future for its various benefits such as environmental, financial etc which makes it apart from the traditional methods of construction.
