Assignment Sample on Personal Effectiveness
Introduction
Personal effectiveness is an extremely crucial component that can be considered by individuals in the prevailing times. There is an intense competition in all aspects of life in the prevailing times and this calls for constant growth and development of the skills of any individual. Thus, personal effectiveness can be an extremely effective tool, as it can help in facilitating better personal growth and development of skills. Personal effectiveness is a branch of self-help movement, which allows an individual to ensure betterment pertaining to success and achievement of the goals that have been set. Therefore, personal effectiveness can be an extremely important tool, which can help in driving higher levels of success overall.
Personal effectiveness can be extremely beneficial when it comes to the generation of better professional development. As personal effectiveness generally deals with self enhancement, coming up with appropriate skills that are completely new and essential as well can be generated using the same. Therefore, the use of appropriate personal effectiveness can help in coming up with better skills, which can ensure future professional growth and development. An understanding of personal effectiveness has been generated in the study here along with various aspects associated with the development of the same. It must be noted that the study here has focused on the CEO Genome project to understand the traits of a leader. Further, the Honey and Mumford learning styles questionnaire has been answered to understand the personal learning style and evaluate the same.
Task 1
The leaders of any organisation have an extremely crucial role to play in the overall success of the same. In the opinions of Zeleke et al. (2021), the leaders of any organisation must have a specific set of skills to ensure that the best results are being generated. In this regard, a study called the CEO Genome Project was developed, which helped in understanding the key skills that can ensure a successful leader. The CEO Genome Project was conducted for over a span of 10 years, and included a study of more than 17,000 executives and this included 2000 CEOs. The results of the project have indicated that for a leader to be an effective one, four skills are extremely necessary. These four skills are deciding with speed and conviction, engaging for impact, adopting proactively and delivering reliably. It has been mentioned that out of these four, a successful leader does not showcase that they possess all these skills. However, the prevalence of one of the above mentioned skills can mean that an individual can succeed as a leader (Oddone et al. 2019). This can be exemplified through the examples of various leaders. However, it must be noted that the skills that have been highlighted by the project are all only soft skills.
One of the major examples of leaders who have showcased the above skills and ensured a higher level of success is Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo. As per Borup and Evmenova (2019), communication is one of the most important soft skills that can propel an individual towards better success as a leader. Effective communication is one of the main areas that Indra Nooyi has showcased, which has helped her to ensure better engagement with her employees and subordinates. This has allowed her to ensure a more motivated and dedicated workforce, which is one of the key requirements of present times to ensure success. Further, it has been outlined in the case study that the communication skills of Indra Nooyi are so advanced that it allowed her to understand problems better and breakdown. As per Ramos-Rodríguez et al. (2021), one of the major areas that can be extremely beneficial as a leader is effective decision making. The results of the CEO Genome Project have outlined the fact that making decisions with speed and conviction is one of the major skills that can contribute towards a successful leader.
As the communication skills of Indra Nooyi allowed her to break down complex problems into simple ones, her decision-making skills were largely enhanced. She was able to come up with fast and appropriate decisions, which allowed her to ensure a greater impact on the overall organisation and its performance. As per Ghimire et al. (2023), without appropriate decision making, there is a minimal chance that an organisation might be able to ensure appropriate strategic management. This can lead to the lack of competitive advantage, which can ultimately result in the failure of the business. Thus, there is a need to understand that owing to her ability to solve complex problems, Nooyi was able to ensure swift decision making, which is a key requirement to become a successful leader. Therefore, her success as a leader can be attributed to both are communication skills, which enabled her to engage with the target audiences, especially her employee base in a more appropriate manner (Doufexi and Pampouri, 2022).
Another major skill that Indra Nooyi has been able to deliver through her appropriate engagement is to ensure that proper flexibility and adaptability is generated within the workforce. She was able to outline the need for any given change, which helped her to ensure that all the workers adopted to the requirement and proper implementation of the same was generated. However, there are examples of leaders who have failed to come up with the desired skills to ensure success. One of the major examples of such a leader, who has been unable to ensure success due to the lack of effective skills is the leader of Enron, Kenneth Lay. As suggested by Borup and Evmenova (2019), ensuring ethics in business is one of the major areas that can propel a business towards greater levels of success. Without ethical practices in business, failure is bound to take place, in the long run. Thus, without ethics in business, a leader fails to deliver reliably. This has been exemplified in the work of Kenneth Lee, who made use of fake reporting, in their financial statements, which led to massive losses for the stakeholders. It ultimately led to the bankruptcy of the business and its overall closure. Therefore, it must be considered that, without delivering reliably, a leader cannot ensure the success of the firm and the success of oneself.
Task 2
Main learning style
Table 1: Honey and Mumford learning style
The results of the Honey and Mumford learning style test have been presented in the table above. The results have clearly indicated that the learning style that I possess at present is the theorist style of learning. With a score of 17, which is the highest, it is proved that theorist style of learning suits me. Nevertheless, reflector and pragmatist styles are also dominant in my case as per the result is mentioned above. However, the main style of learning that can be associated with me is the theorist style. This theorist style of learning is based on appropriate analysis and synthesis of any given context. As per Stander et al. (2019), is to assimilate disparate facts and data, and then convert them into coherent and logical theories. The focus is on the aspect of logic and rationality and therefore, this can be seen as one of the most effective learning styles when it comes to the development of key skills.
The major strength of the purist style of learning is the fact that it is extensively based on research, which is essentially one of the most appropriate ways in which both the phenomena and the key factors impacting the phenomena can be understood. This allows a more extensive study, which can be beneficial and can help in facilitating better understanding of the main areas associated with the same. According to Dyulicheva and Kosova (2020), undertaking a thorough research and ensuring appropriate usage of models and theories is one of the major areas that can be considered in the case of the theorist style of learning. Therefore, a more detailed study can be facilitated when the learning style is theorist in nature. Further, the use of this style can be extremely beneficial when it comes to the assimilation of detailed information about any given aspect. A more comprehensive study can be conducted by a theorist, and therefore, it can be extremely beneficial when it comes to the generation of better understanding and ideas about the required aspects.
However, the major downside that can be associated with this learning process is the time consuming area. It can be said that the process of learning that is followed by any theorist is largely time consuming (Yadav et al. 2020). It can have extensive time requirements, as there is a need to conduct effective research work. Therefore, this is one of the major weaknesses that can be associated with this learning style. Another major issue that has been pointed out in the case of the theorist learning style is the lack of creativity that it has to offer. As the overall learning style is largely dependent on the use of existing data and understanding of existing knowledge, this style lacks the levels of creativity that must be considered. Further, it also results in a decline of creative thinking, which is an essential skill and can foster better results in the professional endeavours of any individual.
Critical evaluation of main learning style
The above analysis has clearly indicated that the overall process of learning of a theorist is extremely time consuming and lacks the levels of creativity. Both these areas are extremely important when it comes to online learning and remote working. Therefore, this can be a problematic issue in this domain. However, as Childs-Kean et al. (2020) suggest, online learning requires correct analysis and visualisation of the key aspects. This can be largely facilitated by making appropriate use of the theorist style of learning and therefore, it can be beneficial in this case.
Task 3
Online platforms
LinkedIn learning
LinkedIn learning is one important online learning platform, which has gained immense popularity in the last two years. According to Abuhassna et al. (2020), the pandemic highlighted the need for an effective alternative learning process, which is online learning. It also allows flexible learning and LinkedIn learning is extremely important in this regard. LinkedIn learning is an American online learning platform which provides video courses. The best part about these courses is the fact that they were taught by industry experts and are generated on a wide range of topics. The major topics that are covered or taught in LinkedIn learning include software, creative and business skills. All these skills are essential in the current era, as they allow better personal effectiveness, and can ensure the generation of appropriate skills that can be beneficial for an individual in the workspace.
Udemy
Another crucial online learning platform, which has gained a high rise in popularity in the last two years is Udemy. Udemy is another learning platform that is similar to LinkedIn learning in terms of its mood of operations and usability. However, the main area of difference is the number of courses that are offered by Udemy. Udemy easily surpasses LinkedIn learning, when it comes to the number of courses that are being offered. Like LinkedIn learning, Udemy is also filled with courses which were largely being taught by industry experts. As Sari and Oktaviani (2021) suggests, learning from industry experts adds to the overall experience and expertise of an individual by ensuring that current trends in the industry are being easily understood. Udemy allows better understanding of key skills and competencies that are required in any given domain. Besides, there are a number of domains from which an individual can select a course to work upon. Each domain has multiple courses, which have their own ratings. An individual can select based on these ratings and study as per their own needs and requirements. Therefore, using Udemy becomes extremely easy as it has an interactive interface which is usable and can generate betterment in the long run. Udemy can be considered to be one of the most effective online learning platforms in the current times.
Critical evaluation
As mentioned earlier, the learning style that I currently possess is theorist learning style. In this regard, one of the key areas that I tend to be inclined to words when it comes to learning is appropriate research and knowledge. This requires me to take an enormous amount of time to come up with an appropriate and fulfilling learning experience (Liu et al. 2020). Therefore, given such criteria of my learning process, it can be said that using Udemy over LinkedIn learning can be an extremely beneficial option for me. The first major reason for the selection of Udemy is the number of courses that are offered in the same domain. This will allow me to access more than one course and can help me to generate more in-depth understanding through appropriate critique of the information provided in the different courses (Agung et al. 2020). Besides, another crucial area that can be beneficial for me if I use Udemy is the fact that it allows lifetime access to the courses that I purchased. Therefore, this is a crucial area that must be considered and this can help in engendering the best possible outcomes in the long run.
Conclusion
Personal effectiveness can play an extremely important role in generating betterment for an individual. It can help in coming up with the most effective skills that can ensure betterment. Further, it can help an individual to generate the desired skills and competencies that can be beneficial in the professional field. The future professional endeavours of an individual can be largely enhanced by making appropriate use of personal effectiveness. The CEO Genome Project has highlighted the major skills that can be beneficial for any leader to be a successful one. These skills can be largely impactful in the overall performance of these leaders and can facilitate the best outcomes in the long run for these leaders as well.
In this regard, the study has effectively pointed out the fact that there is a need for all individuals to come up with extensive development of critical skills. I have a theorist learning style, which makes me dependent on existing theories and models to facilitate a better learning process. This is a time consuming affair, which I must consider as a weakness as well. Nevertheless, with online learning that has set in, the use of the correct learning, styles and techniques can be beneficial. Udemy is one of the most essential and effective online platforms, which can be beneficial in my case. I can make use of Udemy to gain access to a wide number of courses in similar domains. This can help me to ensure a better learning process.
