1. Introduction
The present report focuses on the analysis of project management of Taunton Warehouse for Supermarket X. This report will focus on the aspect of project management with the help of Star Work PRINCE2 methodology. Supermarket X is one of the major UK food retailers with more than 400 stores. The market serves more than 9 million customers a week with the help of 32000 employees. This report will focus on creation of 860000 sq ft composite warehouse in Taunton, England. Discussions regarding systematic understanding of project life cycle will be included in this study along with phases of project life cycle with the help of PRINCE2 methodology. Critical evaluation and recommendations regarding PRINCE2 methodology will even be included in this report.
2. Main Body
2.1 Project Life Cycle Theory
Project life cycle is a sequence which involves different phases of a project, these phases start from planning of a project to the closure stage. Sequence and number of phases differ from project to project as the life cycle for a construction project is distinct from other project cycles. As per the study by Turk and Klinc (2017), project life cycle theory critically discusses the definite start and end of the project along with control points and constraints.
Present project is focused on the creation of Taunton warehouse for Supermarket X which will help in serving more than 9 million customers all across the UK. The construction contract is for five years and the site will incur models and technologies related to IT work and delivery of products as well.
The project life cycle consists of 4 stages in case of a construction project such as the initiation stage, planning stage, execution stage and termination stage. Based on the study by Dave et al. (2016), the initiation stage of the project concerns the definition of overall project and authorization of the project. In case of the Taunton warehouse construction, initiation is referred to the analysis of warehouse requirement and how it will serve the customers.
Initiation Stage
Initiation stage is even responsible for analysing the project’s vision and mission as well. As cited by Irizarry and Costa (2016), objectives of a project are decided in this initial phase of a project such as Taunton warehouse is being created in order to satisfy Supermarket X needs and administer back-office functions. Training drivers would also be recruited once the project is completed.
Planning Stage

According to the views of Steenkamp and Bekker (2018), major strategies and project approach will be applied in this stage. Entire supervision and control of the projects shifts towards the project manager. This phase of the project can even be entered as control and evaluation.
The entire project has been aimed at starting in March 2020 and major parts of this project should be completed by September 2020. This execution stage requires extensive control measures by the project manager for the Supermarket X Taunton Warehouse project and the front side of the Warehouse is required to be completed by the end of 2020. The entire project will be completed by April 2021.
Termination Stage
Termination is the last stage of any project management and all the documentation along with formalities are done in this stage (Enshassi et al. 2016). Taunton warehouse will be completed by April 2021 and closure will be done by May 2021.
2.2 PRINCE2 Methodology
PRINCE2 is a type of project management methodology that is aimed towards successful completion of a project with optimum quality and schedule management schemes. As stated by Matějka and Tomek (2017), PRINCE2 methodology is a strictly defined combination of logics that are related to practices of process and methods. These methods help in determination of the best project plan and continuous improvement plans.
Creation of Taunton Warehouse for Supermarket X will follow project management methodology determined by PRINCE2 processes. As cited by Volkov and Kuzina (2016), this will help in creation of structured methods for project management. PRINCE2 is a process-based model and is used in over 150 countries. Since the warehouse project is related to the creation of 8600000 sq ft construction, this will help in gaining excessive control over the project. There are several benefits of PRINCE2 such as this method is focused on business justification which will help Taunton to serve more than 9 million customers. This is a Product-based planning approach which will help in migration of chill, ambient and frozen products from 4 distinct sites of Supermarket X.
PRINCE2 methodology even helps a project to dive into manageable and controllable circumstances which later helps a project to be completed within the limited time. Taunton Warehouse creation is aimed at completion within April 2021 and the use of PRINCE2 will help its successful completion of the project. As stated by Ma et al. (2018), PRINCE2 even promotes flexibility in a project which drives change management easily. Taunton Warehouse will complete the first half of the site by September 2020 and change might be required for the latter half as Supermarket X will open the warehouse for Christmas 2020.
PRINCE2 is even focused at gaining control over other measures present in a project which is an inclusive aspect in case of a construction project. As cited by Naik and Jenkins (2019), PRINCE2 even gives the opportunity to work on Emid stage assessments which are not directly related to the current project workings. Resource constraints are even paid attention to the PRINCE2 methodology.
One of the major objectives of Taunton Warehouse creation for Supermarket X is the removal or closure of old warehouses. This is an integrated work with this project and PRINCE2 will help in focus to shift towards the closure of old sites. Transfer of more than 100 Colleagues will even be done in Supermarket X which also remains viable with the PRINCE2 business case analysis.
2.3 Critical Evaluation of PRINCE2 for Supermarket X
Justification for using PRINCE2 over Agile and PMBOK
PRINCE2 is one of the most commonly used project management methodologies all around the world and this methodology even helps in division of a project which is not present in case of PMBOK and agile methodologies. As cited by Murillo Gomez and Jiménez (2018), the communication aspect of project management is largely enhanced in case of PRINCE2 methodology which is absent in case of Agile. Management of external stakeholders in a project is extensively important as Taunton Warehouse for Supermarket X is majorly focused on all the stakeholders. Use of PRINCE2 will give the project manager significant advantage in case of controlling the stakeholders which cannot be done in case of PMBOK and Agile.

There are seven principles mentioned in PRINCE2 project management which help in attaining appropriate information for the project. Business justification helps in gaining knowledge about the business case which will help in appropriate creation for Taunton Warehouse for Supermarket X. As cited by Jamali and Oveisi (2016), project managers are required to learn from past experiences and can apply such learning in a current project. Definition of roles and responsibilities in such cases is the key for Taunton warehouse as it is a 12-month construction project. 3. Conclusion
Based on the above analysis it can be concluded that the use of PRINCE2 methodology in Taunton Warehouse project management is going to be a success. It has been found out that the project life cycle poses four processes which will be followed in Taunton development in order to achieve successful closure. PRINCE2 methodology in project management derives seven specific rules based on principles, themes and processes. These will be used in case of the Taunton warehouse project for Supermarket X in order to complete the project successfully. Evaluation and control are the main aspects of the PRINCE2 methodology.
4. Recommendations
There are several methods of gaining success in the Taunton project for Supermarket X. Success factors largely vary from project to project; however, several success factors are listed below:
- It is extensively important for a project manager to know all the information related to the business case and the organization in case of such construction projects. It is suggested that the project manager should gain extensive insights into Supermarket X and its previous ventures as well.
- It is suggested that identification of project requirement are significant since it will help the project manager to set extensive project boundaries for all the workers (Jaziri, 2018).
- It is suggested that Supermarket X should focus on recruitment of an experienced project manager as the warehouse creation is a lengthy and huge project in the aspect of construction (Coppola et al. 2016).
- It is suggested that the project manager should extensively focus on communication aspect of a project as transparent communication will lead to successful project closure.
- Documentation of the Taunton project is required to be done appropriately as the project might include change management after September 2020.
