Title: Climate change simultaneously presents the most significant threat to human prosperity
and well-being, and the greatest opportunity for economic and technological transformation
in the 21st century. To what extent do you agree with this claim? Discuss with reference to
specific examples.

As per the given statement which claim climate change is the biggest threat to humans but
simultaneously opportunistic to economic or technological transformation. In respect to this
claim, there is partial agreement as climate change cause threats to both humans as well as
economy development. It could be the opportunistic for the technology transformation. It can
be proved with the following article findings. The IPCC report (United states
intergovernmental panels on climate change) revealed that earth has warmed by 1°C since
after pre-industrial era and two-thirds of this rise has occurred since 1986. The twenty
warmest years on record have occurred over past 22 years (LINDSEY & HERRING, 2020).
This is because of air temperatures are significantly determined by ocean temperatures. The
year 2015 and 2017 were shockingly have warmest temperature. It is claim that China in year
2015 has produced 1.51 x 10^22 Joules or amount of electrical energy. It particularly become
problematic for phytoplankton that produces half the oxygen for humans. As per the global
carbon project carbon emissions are expected to increase by 2.7% for 2018 due to increasing
oil consumption to last five consecutive years. In current scenario, carbon dioxide measured
at over 400 parts per million which is 65% increase over pre-industrial levels in last three
million years ago (Introcaso, 2018). In regards to concerning problem of climate change
definitely become an important topic for discussion for identifying its threat to humans or
how much it is opportunities or threat to economy and technology transformation.
The above information clearly shown the increasing threats or negative consequences of
climate changes, it’s important to understand these threats over certain areas like humans or

economy.
The warming climate is already a concern area for human health as it affects the social
community in adverse manner. Likewise, climate change causes widespread of hunger or
illness that will grow exponentially worse. The climate change has arrived and is accelerating
faster than expected with more severe effects (CHO, 2019). According to US national
institute of environmental health sciences claimed that climate change makes many existing
diseases of people worsen for them. Likewise, now-a-days huge population is facing
problems such as breathing one, cardiac attest or many related to viral. These problems
humans are facing with the frequent change in climate as now weather is not stable as winter
become more worsen with extreme low in temperature whereas, summer time create a
problem of redness with extreme hot. The occurrence of COVID-19 is another consequence
of climate change within which humans get attack with virus that create worsen situation of
people which many of time become resulted into death.
Additionally, the effect of global warming on human health are apparent worsen as past few
instances clearly shown the negative signs for human lives. Mosquito and tick population are
spreading northward as the climate warns bringing with them a number of infectious
diseases. There are some viruses which are become endemic and these are Zika virus in
Florida and Dengue in many Asian nations (Alagidede et al., 2016). Extreme weather events
that threaten the human life and health and it become more common as wildfires broke down
recently in California due to which the sky is filled with throat-choking smoke and threaten
neighbourhoods with destruction. In a similar manner, the climate changes also bring various
problem in Sub-Saharan African areas in the form of increase hunger and starvation problem.
This is because of climate change threaten crop yields and warming ocean causes fish
populations to decline. This also create the problem of breathing problem among humans.
That’s why, marine ecosystem needs to be balanced properly. But the current scenario clearly
shown the negative consequences of these climate change over the human body. In respect to
this adverse effect, the peoples are responsible for disturb the marine life through dump
wastage in seas, improper utilisation of resources etc (Pizhuk & Mynchynska, 2021). These
unethical actions become responsible for the increasing temperature or frequent climate
changes. It directly become a threat for the humans’ existences for longer duration. Thus,
these instances have proved the ill-effects of climate changes over the humans which are
currently struggle with lot of virus diseases which are extensively spreading and its solution
still unknown to scientist.
The climate change effect on economic growth can be considered as a both threat and

opportunity. The climate variables, temperature in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) indicated the
impact on economy development. The article stated that increase in temperature significantly
reduces economic performances in Sub-Saharan Africa (Arndt et al., 2014). Likewise, SSA
relies heavily on the agricultural sector for the economy output in that case higher
temperature could actually reduce agriculture output with damaging industrial growth, job
creation and poverty reduction etc. The estimation of short or long-term relationship between
climate change and economic growth in SSA, it is identified that climate change in short-
term level create various problems related to the damage of agriculture, production process
etc. The frequent problem of floods, cyclone or earthquakes are affecting the industries on
adverse manner. In case of long-run, it is estimated that climate change could create adverse
conditions such as unemployment, weaker society and high deaths rates (Rezai et al., 2018).
Therefore, the climate change has brought negative consequences for economy for short or
long-term level. It clearly indicated that climate change is the ongoing threat for economy
development.
At the same time, it can also be stated that climate change is also become a factor for
economy transformation as with the increasing problem of global warming, the green
economy is the newly developed concept which is largely followed by the global industries
or nations. The purpose of green economy is to achieve the sustainable goals through
optimum utilisation of resources or converse the energy in order to reduce the environmental
issues (Li, 2014). The green economy term was coined in 2008 with the purpose to make
discussion on anti-crisis policy, but today its recognised as an economy that improves human
well-being and strengthen social justice through simultaneously reducing the risks to the
environment and scarcity of environmental resources. The green economy focuses on
building proper awareness about the ill-effects of human unethical actions or train them to
use right actions for society and environment. Basically, green economy has mainly been
defined as a practical approach to attain sustainable development. According to this term, the
focus of people towards maintaining, restoring of natural capital, excessive use of renewable
energy technologies like solar panels or wind-mills etc, to produce energy instead of burning
of fossil-fuel which create lot of air pollution (Burke et al., 2016). The conventional practices
need to be replaced by the advanced technology for transform the economy into green-
economy for achievement of eco-friendly environmental goals. The responsible behaviours
of urban people are also important for achievement of green-economy. It is found that urban
residents are the major responsible for the increasing problem of climate change. The

deforestation is the major problem due to which economy faces problem of breathing or
increasing temperature. These need to be balanced by the urban people. It can be done
through design the construction building projects through even become responsible for
environment as well. The requirements of residents should be evaluated for constructing any
building as construction work takes huge resources utilisation, deforestation or air pollution
which causes the rise in temperature (Owusu & Asumadu-Sarkodie, 2016). Basically, the
ethical behaviour of people is important to achieve the green-economy proper
implementation in present scenario then only the future positive impact could be gained.
The example of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) clearly presented those human actions are
responsible for the threats to economy. The countries which are in SSA are in developing
stage as these countries are covered with dense forest and extreme faces the consequences of
climate change in a way of agriculture crop damages due to which the population get
affected. Similarly, the employment rate is also affected in SSA due to poor weather
conditions as no employment opportunity exist in the African areas due to investors does not
find favourable climate condition to bring any project (Cairns et al., 2013). Thus, this
instances clearly indicated how climate conditions influences the global economy in adverse
manner. In a similar manner. right governances over the humans’ actions also supports the
achievement of green-economy. This could give opportunities to social community to grow.
Governances has a positive and significant impact on economic growth as per the selected
SIDS (small Island developing states). The finding of this article stated that weak governance
arrangements in small islands states which fail to have well defined goals and strategies in
the climate change sector. Therefore, it is need to administer holistic and coordinated manner
to build the proper governance’s structure to reduce the impact of climate change
(Mohammed & Uraguchi, 2013).
In respect to increase opportunities for technology transformation, climate change has a
major role to make countries realise about the significance’s of adopting advanced
technology as compare to conventional practices. This would also support the economy to
grow in a way to introduce more employment opportunities for people or improve their
standard of living. Likewise, the growing technology related to Artificial intelligence or
machine learnings helps the industries to understand the customer needs or even connect with
different stakeholders with use of technology (Webber et al., 2014). This practice reduces the
logistic or transportation cost. Even the internet technology or AI/VI system supports the
people in present situation of pandemic and allows people to stay connected or perform
work-from-home. They are also engaged with the start-ups via use of internet. These

practices support to reduces the wastages or converse energy in a way that entrepreneurs
avoid to hire multiple employees for office work as with use of digitalisation they hire them
or ask to do work-from-home. This practice supports the people to avoid the hiring of big
space or even equip the electric devices into it. These areas support a lot towards converse
energy. Thus, this way technology transformation is assisting to reduce the ill-effects of
climate changes. However, the increasing emphasis on the renewable resources such as solar
panels in the construction projects to converse energy as these technologies support with low
pollution or positive sustainable outcome in comparison to conventional practices like fossil-
fuels burning which is another big threat to climate. Thus, it is proved that advanced
technology adaptation could replace it as an opportunity for economy or even for human
health (Guo et al., 2014). The replacement from conventional method to focus on innovative
process would assist more towards gaining sustainable goals.
The achievement of opportunities required for the development of right governance system
from government side to properly build the strong regulatory system over the industries or
people activities. The use of right action plan would only assist the countries to move towards
achieving sustainable economy or eco-friendly environment (Kula et al., 2013). Therefore, it
all depends upon the society actions, government policies or monitoring activities to convert
the threats of climate change into opportunities by converse energy or provide green or clean
environment to people to live in.
From the above discussion, it is concluded that climate change is the biggest threat for
humans and proved that right human actions or policies could be the biggest areas to bring
transformation in the form of green-economy. Currently, the concept of a green economy is
being actively initiated in global level. It can only be achieved with the replacement of
advanced technology practices with the conventional methods. This would give opportunity
to people to get employment or even converse energy. This could support towards the
achieving of sustainable goals (McLaren & Markusson, 2020). Hence, it is proved that
climate change is the biggest threats to humans, economy until the right technology hasn’t
adopted and this would support towards gaining sustainable goals. It helps to covert threats
into opportunities for the people or economy development.
