1. Introduction
“Construction Project Management” is a combination of “Arts and Science” which comes with great challenges. The essay contains the background of construction management and effective approach to meet the expectations and needs of the clients. The ethics and governance of this business have been analyzed in this study. Governance of the projects has been discussed to check if the management precedes any unauthorized or illegal constructions. The malpractices have been found regarding the projects and research has been held to understand the reasons behind them. Suggestions and recommendations have also been given according to the malpractices to overcome the situations and to avoid any such conditions in future.
2. Background of the research
“Construction Project Management” is an important field to be focused on with immense alertness. Any hazard in this manufacturing field can hamper the reputation of the manager of the project and the whole team. As per Banihashemi et al. (2017), it can also meet a huge financial loss if genuine guidance is not provided to the team so discussion on the background of the background and previous records is a must needed step before starting any new project. The “Construction Project Management” includes two more important fields such as “Construction Waste Management (CWM)” and “Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)” techniques. These two aspects also need to inspect well for the future purpose of the project.
3. The ethics and governance in business
The managers of the construction are supposed to keep in mind certain things such as weather change, availability of the important equipment, and investigation of the Government. Construction management has many struggles for instance they may find surprise electric cables underground and con with the work for several times. These conditions generate complications in the construction project management but if anyone survives those situations then it becomes rewarding as well (Demirkesen and Ozorhon 2017). The project manager needs to meet the demand of the consumers and make a proper strategy for drafting and teamwork to make their project successful.
Urbanization and constant development have made construction management a more stressful and profitable job also. Construction management needs a good grasp of academic knowledge as well as practical experience also to make their project more valuable. It has also been found that the constructions make a lot of pollution in the environment so the government needs to inspect the project. Construction management comprises two main features such as “Construction Waste Management (CWM)” and “Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)” techniques. The former deals with the removal of pollution and maintaining a green construction and the latter on the other hand precede with the structure improvement techniques.
Project governance is the framework that deals with the leadership and influences to monitor the project according to the structure provided by the clients. Governance of the project is the supervision of the whole work and this is the responsibility of the sponsor. The Governance of the project comes with various aspects for example the type of the project, the abstraction of the governance and reanalyzing construction of project governance. The type of the projects comes with several points, such as perceiving the project from farms and markets, evolving inter farm from the intra farm projects and inspecting the individualization of project constructions. The abstraction of the governance deals with many organizations and these are not maintained repeatedly or regularly. The reanalyzing construction of project governance helps to understand the main concept of the project governance, three categories of governance and the governance related to the responsibilities of the project manager from the perspective of usual companies or clients.
The company should put together a measure that can change and improve the governance regularly. As cited by Gunduz and Almuajebh (2020) it is much needed because this step can reduce the malpractices within the management. The framework must be organized only with the compulsory tools to maintain the good quality and reputation of their organization. Huge responsibilities come with the huge popularity of the organization and cooperation and good understanding among the teammates can maintain that. The correct strategy to do the governance is to identify the profitable stakeholders and to do the same a proper communication idea must be needed to be ready. After the communication method has been done appropriately, the manager gives assurance, which approves the balance between reporting and convocation (Levy 2018). The next concern is risk management, which is probably the most important job to do as the profit, reputation and success come after a perfect risk analysis. If the company fails to measure the risk or does not understand which direction they should move then it can bring many unwanted hazards. For this purpose, the company must hire an experienced analyzer to maintain this crucial rule with high efficiency. The whole project is governed effectively under the supervision of the “Decision-making tool” and that can effectively manage the project. Ethics and governance play a key role to intensify project management with success.
4. Impact of poor ethics
The ethics of an organisation is one of the most important things that help to gain social support. In the construction industry, an organisation has to maintain their ethics with their stakeholders. Stakeholders are the most important person to keep the business alive and provide internal and external support from the development of the business process (Kabirifar and Mojtahedi, 2019). Stakeholders such as customers, investors, and employees help to develop the workforce of an organisation and the investors’ provide financial backup to an organisation. This provides that company with the opportunity to get their resources and other equipment to maintain their work efficiency and the customers help to improve the goodwill of the company. Customer support helps the organisation to get a competitive advantage in this construction industry.
In this scenario, the poor ethics of an organisation influences the relationship with their stakeholders. As a result, the organisation is not able to get enough investors and is unable to improve their customer retention and it will decrease the production function of a company (Fernández-Guadaño and Sarria-Pedroza, 2018). Poor ethics leads to an increase in fraud cases and its impact on goodwill for an organisation that affects the organisational development process. Therefore, there can be professional incompetence for which the employees are not able to perform their tasks and improve their performance effectively (Palermo et al. 2018). There is a chance of an increase in waste materials and they take much time to perform a particular task. As an impact, the organisation is unable to fulfil the poet in time and fulfil the organisation goals to develop their business process. Other than this, poor ethics lead to having professional misconduct that affects the workflow of an organisation as it increases internal issues in an organisation.
Professional misconduct creates issues in the coordination of employees and their decisions and it affects their teamwork and coordination (Ström, 2020). In the case of the development of the construction industry, employee support and coordination are some of the most important things, it helps the organisation to fulfil their targets, and they help to collect necessary data and information. This information helps the management team to develop an effective strategy and effective planning procedure to perform the task effectively and mitigate the project related issues. On the other hand, there can be low management support for the employees that influence employee performance (Kalambayi et al. 2021). Issues in employee performance and lack of project delivery process and that create several issues in the case of fulfilling the project ethics. Therefore, there can be some issues in employee’s behaviour and work.
In this case, the management face maintaining the employee performance and providing them training sessions to train them about particular skills. In this scenario, there is a lack of trust between the management and the employees and it spoils the working environment as well as the manager-employee relation (Mukhtar et al. 2021). This is the reason why the employees can face issues in case of identifying the effective process to perform a task in the meantime. Therefore, they may face hurdles in solving their issues and problems and developing their organisational performance. In the construction industry, an organisation has to build their reputation in the market to get an efficient number of projects. However, the issue in reputation can affect the loyal customer base of the organisations.
In this scenario, without having a proper customer base and social support no company is able to achieve success in its business development process. Poor ethics of an organisation influence the employee retention process and the organisation is unable to have a skilful employee in their organisation that can perform multiple tasks and mitigate the cost of an organisation. Therefore, in the construction industry, an organisation has to make a proper relationship with their supplier and have poor ethics of the company and goodwill in the market, no supplier focuses on providing quality-based raw materials to the organisation. These are some of the impacts of poor ethics in the company that spoil the cost management process and development of the organisational business procedures.
5. Evaluate the reason for malpractice
Malpractice is the action of professional negligence where organisations neglect the collected data and information and any other legal rules and regulation to fulfil the target of their organisational business. The management team and operational team are responsible to maintain ethics and mitigating the issues of having malpractice in an organisation. In this section, there are some evaluations of reasons that create malpractice in an organisation. In this construction industry, there is a highly competitive scenario, for which organisations are implementing their effective strategies to step ahead from their competitors and improve either, their customer base. The SMEs and start up organisations are more into gaining customer support and making goodwill in the meantime. They want to develop their sales percentage and annual project percentage of the company and use low-quality products and do unethical work. Those organisations are offering services at a low cost for which the customer is more attracted to their organisation and fulfils their project through providing minimal costs.
However, h usage of low-quality materials is unable to provide long-term service and the customer has poor experiences in those cases. AS an impact, the authentic companies are unable to get projects because of trust issues in start up organisations (Yao et al. 2019). On the other hand, in some cases, the operational team increases the cost of the project and provides it to the customer. It helps the company to increase its profit percentage. Several organisations implement this process to improve their business procedure in the meantime. Therefore, in the construction industry, there can be chances of having fraud cases in the employee’s actions that impact the overall goodwill of the organisations. This creates internal issues in an organisation, employees are not performing their tasks properly, and it affects the whole infrastructure of an organisation.
This malpractice of an organisation leads to having legal issues for their business. These legal issues of an organisation spoil the goodwill of an organisation in the market and they face issues in case of maintaining relationships with their stakeholders (Fernández-Guadaño and Sarria-Pedroza, 2018). Other than this, there is a chance of having issues in the design process by the management team of an organisation for which the employees are not aware to do such malpractices. This helps to increase the profit percentage of that company but it creates the risk of having fraud cases that leads to having legal cases for the organisation.
6. Possible actions to mitigate malpractice issues
Malpractice influences the performance of the organisation well as their employees’ efficiency. It helps to increase the goodwill of an organisation and affects the maintenance of proper relationships with its stakeholders. As a result, there are financial issues and social issues and it affects the workflow of the overall business process. However, some possible actions are able to decrease the risk of having malpractice related issues. Those are mentioned below:
Proper relation with stakeholders
In case of mitigating the issues of malpractice, an organisation and their management team have to build a good relationship with its stakeholders to gain their trust (Nguyen et al. 2019). In this case, they can provide information and some details of their involvement in their business development process that motivates those stakeholders to maintain their support towards the organisations. This increases the goodwill of the organisation and they are able to maintain their relationship.
Proper ethics
An organisation should have proper ethics for their management team, operational and for their employees. On the other hand, there should be a clear declaration of following the company ethics. This provides proper guidance to their employees about the process to perform their tasks and maintain the company ethics. As a result, there is a chance of mitigating the malpractice from the side of those employees (Liu et al. 2021). If the company found any case of this malpractice, the hierarchy should terminate the employee and it helps to create a proper statement about not to make any malpractice in that company. The organisational team has to develop proper rules and regulations to maintain the ethics of their company. These rules and regulations help to understand the responsibilities of each employee and the expectation of the company towards the performance of those employees.
Self-development
In this scenario, an organisation focuses on their self-development process by getting data and information from other organisations. Therefore, the management team also have to maintain the ethics of their company and guide their employees to maintain it, in this case, they have to monitor the performance and behaviours of their employees. This helps to maintain the ethics of the company and there is less chance of having malpractices in an organisation. Through observing the process, the management team are also able to maintain the working environment of their organisation. This management team is able to motivate their employees to maintain ethics for the future development of the organisation.
Training and development process
An organisation has to look into the training and development process of their employees to help improve the performance of their employees. The management team has to understand the possible issues the employees are facing in case of developing their performance and arrange proper training to mitigate those issues (Tezel et al. 2021). It helps the organisation to provide instructions for following their business ethics. This helps to develop their performance in organisational tasks and decrease the chance of having issues of malpractice.
Technical support
In the construction industry, an organisation implements advanced technology that helps to monitor the performance of its employees. There is AI technology and a Block chain analysis process that helps to understand the workflow of the organisation and maintain data and information of the department (Mohamed et al. 2020). The block chain analysis process helps to maintain the supply chain management process of an organisation and this helps to maintain a proper relationship with the stakeholders of the company. This technology helps to get the information of resources related issues for which the management team is able to take proper steps to maintain the organisational raw material and other equipment. There is no chance of a fraud case and there are such malpractices that can be done through employees. Other than this, there can be an implementation of the big data analysis process that helps to collect authentic data and information about possibilities about the malpractice issues (Müller et al. 2018). This big data analysis helps to maintain the payment method that maintains the authenticity with their customers and there is no such payment related to malpractice in the organisation.
Data and research process
An organisation should have a proper research process before selecting their investors and other partners and also about their support. In this case, the organisation has less chance of having fraud cases and malpractice from their investors.
These are some of the possible solutions that help SMEs and start up organisations as well as the existing companies to maintain ethics and mitigate the risk of malpractice in their organisation. This helps to improve the performance of their employees and increase the annual profit percentage of their organisation in this competitive market scenario. These strategies help to gain competitive advantages and the organisation is able to step ahead of its competitors.
7. Recommendations
The recommendation of an experienced author must be followed to flourish in the construction field and to get more projects in near future. The recommendations include some principal tips which are mentioned further. As discussed by (Lock 2017) all the stakeholders must understand the guidelines and requirements properly before starting any project. A risk reaction team must be created that will be ready for any emergency service at any time. A brief and comprehensive blueprint of the project must be ready before the work is done. Effective communication is the game changer in this field so this field should be highlighted with efficient workers. The importance of understanding the needs of the client is the most important task and to do so effective communication is much needed. The leadership should encourage the whole team to make progress in their work and should incentivize those (Owusu et al. 2019). The progress of the company must be measured properly and track the day-to-day progress to make the further strategy. To do this a computerized file is needed to record the data. All the recommendations are supposed to be met to make regular progress, profit and attract more clients.
