The pandemic time of the COVID-19 has put negative impact on each of the business sectors however more on the hospitality sector.  Due to the severe lockdowns in different countries, this sector has been facing huge losses. There is a deep-seated fear among people that stepping out of their homes might lead to catching the virus. The governments have stopped all the interactions for reducing the spread of corona virus. However, the hospitality industry has been suffering in terms of increasing the profits and growth as compared to other sectors. This essay discusses the impact of COVID 19 on the hospitality and leisure industry.

b. Main body

The COVID-19 pandemic has hugely affected the global economy; it has resulted in the loss of lives across the world and adversely affected the mental health of individuals. Governments across the globe have identified the threats and imposed lockdowns and movement control orders in their respective countries. The pandemic has significantly affected the economic activities of different sectors of business. As per the views of Nishi et al. (2020), the stagnation of worldly activities has resulted in huge economic losses. The most affected industries during this pandemic were the hospitality industry, tourism industry, retail industry, as well as the import and export industry.

The social and economic disruption caused by the pandemic has resulted in recession and poverty across the globe. The loss of economic activities has influenced the hospitality industry to restructure their businesses as well as take preventive measures for reducing the spread of this disease. As per the views of Nishi et al.(2020), half of the world’s hospitality workforce is on the verge of losing their jobs due to this pandemic. As argued by BILSLAND et al.(2020), this pandemic has also resulted in the loss of social protection across nations. The ban on travels across the globe has forced hospitality sectors to go bankrupt. Many organizations followed the downsizing plan to avoid bankruptcy. This has resulted in the loss of employment across the industry and affected the mental health of individuals. It has been observed that this has led to a serious rise in suicide rates across the globe, the loss of jobs and stagnation of businesses have created a situation of panic and fear within the minds of the population.

The hospitality and leisure industry was the first industry across the globe to face the adverse effects of the pandemic on their business. The effects were seen on revenue and the supply chain of these industries. The decision of closing down hotels, restaurants, cinemas, and parks has hampered the global economy largely. The disruption of worldwide tourism has pivotally affected the hospitality industry. The lack of domestic and international flights across the globe resulted in the loss of tourists and caused huge losses for the hospitality and tourism industries across the globe. The government’s priority during this time was to ensure the safety of the nation and its population, however, stagnating most economic activities resulted in the loss of GDP throughout the world. As argued by Nishi et al.(2020), the hospitality industry is slowly rising and aims at continuing operations. Research has reflected on the fact that more than 50 percent of the world’s population is not willing to travel, thus lowering the possibilities of staying in a hotel. Restaurants also faced a huge crisis as there was a huge demand for raw materials but a loss of supply influenced these businesses to become temporarily closed. Hotel revenues and occupancies in the hotels have been hugely affected because of the travel bans and strict movement control policies. As per the views of Davahli et al.(2020), the loss of demand and feeling of fear-induced panic envisages a threat for the hospitality industry. The effect of the pandemic was not only reflected by the economical crisis but also by the mental trauma and fear of the customers. It has been noticed that most customers will not feel safe in going to restaurants to dine and to travel and stay at hotels. This has severely affected the local business of countries and key tourist locations. As per the views of BILSLAND et al.(2020), the survival of the hospitality industry depends heavily on the demand for their services. According to Bastola (2020), around 18 percent of the population will feel secure if the locality in which the hotels are located must have very low or no cases of COVID-19.

Hotels and restaurants are taking short as well as long term measures for reducing the spread of the virus and maintaining operations of the business. As per the views of Rogerson and Rogerson (2020), 40 percent of customers are willing to pay more for safety and precautionary measures. Hotels and restaurants have reopened after the pandemic has installed temperature sensors in their entrances for preventing the spread of the virus (PWC UK, 2020). Restaurants have trained their staff with the latest hygiene and respiratory protocols to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment. Many hotels and restaurants have started to take on the online approach for operating their business. Governments have provided various financial aids for helping these organizations to recover from the negative effects of the pandemic (BILSLAND et al.2020). As per the views of Rogerson and Rogerson (2020), bistros, cafes, bars, and other small enterprises belonging to the hospitality sector have faced the worst losses. Many cafes and bistros have faced bankruptcy; however, some organizations have ended up merging with bigger brands for maintaining operations in the industry. Hotels and restaurants have taken measures to provide discounts to the customers and assure them about the safety measures taken by them (BBC News, 2020).

The hospitality industry of India has been affected hugely with domestic hotels facing a huge loss in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2020. As per the views of Seraphin and Yallop (2020), the organizations in India will also face significant predictable losses in the first quarter of the financial year 2021. Many issues have been identified in the leisure segments in the country Tier 2, as well as tier 3 hotels, are facing small losses in the business now. In Europe, the profit of the industry has declined from 29 percent to 11 percent during the COVID-19 (Jolly, 2020). The emergency measures taken by the KHN which represents the cafes, bars, and hotels have resulted in the loss of economic transactions the rate of losses is predicted to go up by 33 percent by the end of the year. China faced the worst implications of all with losses rising to 68 percent though the markets have stabilized the effects are still visible due to the fear and panic within the customers (BILSLAND et al.2020). In America, 50 percent of hotel jobs are lost and resulted in a huge recession. The average occupancy rate in the UK and Italy has gone down by significant numbers of 67 percent and 96 percent respectively.

The following recommendations can help the hospitality and leisure industries to revive after COVID 19:

Changing the experience of the customers: The pandemic has led to individuals avoiding all contact with each other, for fear of contamination. This is likely to remain even after the casualty rate declines (NAPIERAŁA et al. 2020). Hotels and restaurants have to think innovatively to ensure that customers have a comfortable experience. This can be done with the help of “personal serving dishes” to ensure zero contact between the waiters and the guests (BAUM et al. 2020).

Understand the perception of the customers: The pandemic has made individuals more health-conscious than ever before. This needs to be kept in mind by the hospitality and leisure industries while providing services to their customers. For example, hotels can provide complimentary masks and sanitizers to customers. Restaurants can make some changes to their menu and provide healthier food that is disease-resistant (Theconversation.com, 2020).

Understand consumption patterns: Even after the casualty rate has declined, people will not feel confident to step out of their homes and eat at any restaurant. In this case, restaurants can organise a “drive-through” facility so that customers can just collect their desired meal from the shop and go back home (Businessworld.in, 2020).

Engage in PR activities: It is up to the hotels and restaurants to attract the customers back into their establishments. One way of doing so is to indulge in attractive PR campaigns that will encourage people to enjoy the services provided by a restaurant or a hotel (Financialexpress.com, 2020).

c. Conclusion

In conclusion, it can be said that COVID 19 has caused significant damage to the hospitality and leisure industry. There is a genuine reason to be afraid of stepping out of homes, which is leading to the closing down of hotels and restaurants. However, this is not going to be a permanent situation. Once the cure for the virus has been discovered, things will go back to normal. At the same time, individuals have to be careful about their own safety and must take the necessary precautions. In a similar way, the hospitality industry has to understand the customers and their apprehensions and provide services accordingly. The recommendations mentioned above can prove to be a point of initiation if followed rigorously. The hospitality industry has to prioritise the satisfaction of their customers more than the profit margin. This may cost them significantly but it will improve in the long run.

• Education has been considered as one of the most important thing for personal development, along the years education has evolved in a positive manner. The education systems across the world have identified the need to provide education to all for the development and growth of a nation.
• As per the views of Billaiyaet al. (2017), education can provide the society with a better future. However, in developing nations, education cannot be accessed by all, as it is not free. The United Nations Organization stated that education must be provided to all for free. Research has observed that there is a rise of more than 32 percent applicants for education related job roles.
• The Education industry took an online approach since the advent of technology various schools have used interactive learning for helping the children develop interest towards studying.
• In the recent times as schools and colleges have stopped and introduced online classes this has helped children to access study materials. As per the views of Hussin (2018), the use of technology in classes has helped teachers to engage students with the learning and provide a holistic platform for growth.
• Teachers have recognized the importance of engaging students for a better learning experience (Bogovizet al. 2018).

c. Rationale

• The recent times have seen huge developments in the education industry; however, recent research has seen that these developments come with a cost.
• Education has become more of a business, this results in a gap of education, which relates directly to the economical status of the students. The change of education policy in recent times has enhanced the learning possibilities for a child.
• The introduction of various subjects and practical knowledge’s from the initial stages of learning has ensured the development of an educated society, which contributes towards the growth of the nation.
• Many students belong from a family with middle and low-income backgrounds thus maintaining the cost of technology is a rising problem. As per the views of Messiou(2017), these rising costs of technology have created difficulties for continuing online classes. However, the world now is quite technologically advanced along with a high disposable income of the population over 80 percent of the student population can access the internet and carry on with the online classes.

• The education sector has faced several challenges. The effective implementation of schools and colleges in underdeveloped areas is a major problem(Narimbaeva, 2020). Political figures are continuously showing pressures to complete their taxation and either governmental factor within the allocated time.
• However, some support is achieved by the industries from the government. As per the view of Martín-Gutiérrezet al. (2017), the industries have to encourage students and parents to adapt to the new online approach of education.
• Another major problem faced by teachers while providing online classes is the lack of attention from kids as well as a loss of monitoring from the teachers. As per the views of Messiou (2017), the lack of attention from kids as well as a loss of monitoring from the teachers can make the education system inefficient.
• As per the opinion of Bogovizet al. (2018), some employees are facing unemployment due to permanently closing of these industries. As cited by Billaiya et al. (2017), annual revenue and the profits margins are facing huge loss that is up to $3 billion.
• Stakeholders and shareholders engagement is decreased day by day due to the economic downturn all over the world. As per the view of Nguyenet al. (2020), the education industry is developing day by day and aims to provide efficient education to the populations.

Based on the understanding of education systems across the globe, the education sector is recommended to encourage students as well as parents to adapt to the online teaching approach (Messiou, 2017). Moreover, industries should be promoting their business with the help of pre recorded educational information that is accessible to the vast numbers of students. It will help the governments and schools to increase the involvement of students and parents and ensure proper and holistic learning.

Further, it is recommended to the political figures to support the educational institutes by providing them with proper funding as well as proper tools and technologies for continuing the online classes. As per the opinion of Hussin (2018), customers further can show positivity towards the industries by taking services from them.

The Education industry took an online approach since the advent of technology various schools have used interactive learning for helping the children develop interest towards studying. In order to encourage students, institutes can provide rewards to the students based on their academic performances and online tests.

As per the views of Hussin (2018), stakeholders and shareholders should be showing some involvement in the Education industries to increased service and experience of these industries. The education systems across the world have identified the need to provide education to all for the development and growth of a nation.

Assessment Part 2: Presentation

1. Description

• In the course about the effects of COVID-19 on Hospitality and Leisure, I worked in a team with my other classmates.
• Therefore, I can say that my skills of working in a team have increased after this session.
• This project has also helped me to increase my presentation skills and I can now speak in English confidently in front of people.
• Moreover, I have learned about the adverse effects of COVID-19 on the hospitality and leisure industry.

We got informed about their financial loss and decrease in their customer base as a result of this pandemic and lockdown. Moreover, it can be determined that they need almost 10 years to recover from this situation and regain their customer base.

2. Feelings

• Before attending this course, I was not aware of the market conditions and the loss faced by the hospitality and leisure industry.
• However, after attending this course, I am well informed about several marketing and management strategies that are followed in this industry.
• Moreover, PESTLE and SWOT analysis have been taught during this session which is helpful in terms of analysing macro- and micro-environment of the hospitality and leisure industry.
• In addition, I have learned about the people’s reaction to this pandemic situation and their losses regarding job and health.

I have gathered a bunch of knowledge about specific business practices in the field of hospitality and leisure. However, I could not perform well in all fields and events which were part of this course.

3. Evaluation

• My presentation skill has improved after this course; however, my fluency of spoken English is not developed yet.
• I have an increased skill of time management and teamwork as I have worked in a team with my classmates.
• Staff management skills have not been developed yet after finishing the project on impact of COVID-19 on the hospitality and leisure industry.
• I have a low skill of communication and that is why I could not communicate with the customers of the hotels properly.

There were a bunch of events in this course that helped me in terms of managing time in a better way.

4. Conclusions

• I have chosen Gibb’s Reflective Model to describe the learning outcomes and my feelings after pursuing the course about effects of COVID-19 on the hospitality and leisure industry.
• After the occurrence of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, my university decided to provide a course on the effects of this pandemic in the above mentioned industry.
• It can be interpreted that this course is helpful for increasing my knowledge about the market condition in the pandemic.

Moreover, my presentation skills, teamwork and time management skills are also increased after attending the course.

5. Action

• It can be recommended to use social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube for customer communication and spending a minimum two hours per day will be necessary (Adeani et al.2020).
• It can be advised to strengthen cognitive decision making capacity and cumulative self-awareness can be suggested to increase staff management skills (He et al.2018).
• It can be recommended to pursue a spoken English course of at least six months and focus on sentences instead of words to develop good English speaking skills (Sekarwinahyu et al.2019).
• It can be suggested to enroll in a technical class to improve the technical skill in terms of business (Dhaliwal et al.2018).

This course is helpful in terms of development of business related skills and improves communication with colleagues.
