INTRODUCTION
People management refers to the procedure of motivating, training, and directing the staff workers to optimise workplace efficiency and promote the professional growth of a person. Business environment leaders like team leads, department heads, and managers also use people management to see the workflow and boost employee performance on daily basis (Lewin, 2022). It is important to have certain knowledge and skills of people management that is should be a part of every manager’s training and education. It is important to have these skills and knowledge to train employees to motivate them and enhance their productivity. In the context of the technology field, managers need to provide fully efficient training to the employees to work accordingly and achieve organizational objectives and goals. Further, this essay consists of the importance of the skills and knowledge used in people management and should be a part of every manager working in the technology field in training and education.
TASK
People management is regarded as the practice of training, recruiting, engaging and retaining workers for a long time in an organisation and ptimise their talent and boosting their productivity. The people management in HRM includes training and development, compensation and benefit, performance management, recruitment and selection etc. about the technology field, the building of modern technology products needs an engineer manager with skills and knowledge to lead a collaborative team of people. There should be a strong leader who requires to have on the fact of communication, motivation, allocation and even if engineers sometimes getting get lonely craft (Bastien, Ferenchick, and Chandra-Mouli, 2022). These knowledge and skills don’t always come naturally to the technical people whether a person is leading a new team or life change from another individual donated to the leadership. To be a successful manager, it is important to have relevant experience or technical skills to get a job done effectively. It is important to have some skills and knowledge within managers’ education. Every manager is successful when they are having soft and hard skills that should be taken for granted.
Four skills are being used by every manager working in a technology field in their education and training. These are technical abilities– by having this ability; it becomes more effective for the manager to lead a team in a subject matter. Moreover, engineering managers incline to have highly skilled employees in their own right. Further, a person who is having a technical ability can handle the work efficiently while managing a team. Also, they can make better recommendations and evaluate all needed risks or trade-offs. The next reason for technically talented managers is too often to save respect from their team. Pure managers can fight to manage high performing distinct contributors but on the other hand experience team members sometimes have a hard time taking orders from managers. For example, Steve Jobs went through these pains at the early stage of Apple, when hiring expert managers before understanding that talented employees couldn’t learn from bozos who only knew about people management. Further, an engineering manager should have to be a soft skill and a strong technical basis that can spring them a huge advantage (Scuotto, Lemaire, and Maalaoui, 2022).
Another skill is communication skill which is most important for nowadays leaders and managers because it is the ability to set a direction and come effectively with all the team members and subordinates. It can be verbal or nonverbal in an organisation. every best leader is having a backup of their words with having a positive behaviour and a set of standards that are for everyone who is around them. In addition, communication skill is needed by every successful manager in their education and training to communicate effectively with their superiors or subordinate because a manager is the one in an organisation who has to deal with every employee or communicate with every department keeping the organisation at large in science and also make sure that team is contributing towards the growth of the organisation. Another skill is emotional intelligence, which is the ability to manage, recognise and regulate all emotions. This is another important skill needed in managers’ training and education. a manager is the one who needs to communicate with every member and also works on team struggles and then works. it is the responsibility of managers in the technical field to solve the problems of employees and also be available for the questions asked by team members (Ismailov, and Laurier, 2022). This can lead to higher efficiency and also it becomes important for managers to develop the efficiency of team members so this makes sure that it creates better performance in the upcoming future and improve efficiency. In addition, it is important to pay attention to every individual and choose a style of communication style which suits the other person effectively.
The next skill is leadership skills which are another sign of people management in managers’ training and education because it is the skill which leads a team and its members effectively and motivates them to do a great thing. Ineffective leaders under motivate their team members and also disengage with the work they have to perform. But leadership skills strengthen the motivation and also encourage employees to work towards making improvements and achieving organisational goals. In people management, it is important to develop leadership skills by leading an example, being decisive, being confident in their abilities, giving employees what they need to succeed being positive and also motivating team members towards working well to encourage them. Some of the other knowledge is related to knowing products and updated technologies which are coming into a market (Leighton, Kardong-Edgren, and Reedy, 2022). It is important to have the proper knowledge and true information about new updated technology which can result in developing true information for the employees as well. If employees are better knowledge about products which is to use, this will boost their productivity and they could be encouraged towards working on a particular task. Further, about their technological industries, a manager should know the competitors with which they have to compete with. These competitors exist within a market and managers have to focus on some marketing and business strategies which could help their company to compete with those competitors and gain a competitive advantage within a market (Firdaus, and Robandi, 2022). Also, managers should be having proper knowledge of HR policy and employees’ rights within an organisation; so that they could tell employees about that information clearly and there could not be any confidentiality with these policies from team members. It is a duty and responsibility of a manager to talk about all policies or procedures of the organisation to the employees so that they should be aware of companies’ procedures and their rights and they can utilise them whenever it is needed. In addition, it becomes important for managers to have this knowledge in their training courses. Also, training is most essential for them to have to develop more essential platform within an organisation. it also helps the employees in getting more information and working efficiently towards the goals and objectives.
It is important to have these skills and knowledge among managers who are training and educating for people management within technology industries because by having the skills a manager should be able to effectively communicate with their superiors and subordinates and also provide training to the employees working in a team (Selwyn, Pangrazio, and Cumbo, 2022). It is important to motivate team members to work towards a common goal. This knowledge and skills of people management should be a part of every manager’s training and education because these skills and knowledge provide decisive skills, problems solving skills, and communication skills which can help them in near future in any organisation. It will help in making decisions effectively and recruiting, retaining, engaging, and training employees effectively so that there will be a decrease in employee turnover ratio which could lead to enhanced the profitability of the organisation. The above skills and knowledge should be in employees’ training and education to provide the confidence so they can be able to make decisions effectively related to their team members. Further, managers should involve employees in decision making and get ideas from them to develop any changes while having alterations within an organisation (Cordner, 2022). Some of these skills like knowledge of competitors, HR policy and updated technologies are most important for managers in their training programs so that they could effectively display their information in front of employees and employees do not have any type of confusion regarding this information of an organisation. While having this knowledge to the team members, they can utilise them whenever it is needed by them and also being aware of various techniques can result in making effective decisions or analysing the risk coming in future.
It has been analysed that due to the technical skill engineers are hired by individual or organisation as upgrading the skills to the management and it need more skills. There are various skills required for engineering management (Kamaruzaman, et.al., 2019). The first skill required for the management is technical knowledge. It has been concluded that top quality of engineering managers is having a classified engineering background; they are highly qualified and complemented with engineering management. It has been concluded that up to date knowledge about the engineering and technologies related to software are required for the engineering management. Team is required to examine and find the best solution required for managing the work and proper understanding is needed about the work to finish the tasks. Managers must have proper knowledge and skills which will be easier for the manager to manage team as it will help it to earn more respect for its team. The second skill required for the management is project management. Engineering manager is required to supervise the work of the engineering team and this manager is required to supervise the whole work from the beginning to the end. It includes co-ordination and communication among the colleague and team, allocation, budgeting the resources and ensures that project must be completed before deadlines. The third skill required for management is communication. It has been considered that upgrading from an engineering role to the management position is very difficult to the individual who is not a natural leader.
Engineer managers are required with effective skills to communicate in an effective way with the team, executives, clients and members of different department who are having less knowledge or experience about the engineering. It has been concluded that having a master’s degree in engineering management is good for attaining the skills of communicating with the organisation or an individual. An individual has obtained some skills in to progress its role from engineering to management position. The fourth skill required for management is decision making (Philbin and Kennedy, 2020). It has been concluded that those individuals who are playing their role as an engineer in the organisation must provide the concrete answers to the problems that they face every day to progress their posts in the company. The management position needs judgment solution and answers. It must have to overcome those situations that doesn’t have perfect and accurate answers like where they will make budget cuts, when to relocate the resources, how will they deal to the interpersonal issues. It is considered as the key skill that a perfect team leader requires to become a perfect leader. The fifth skill needed for the management is delegation. Sometimes some operations were accomplished faster and better if an employee finishes it by itself. In some situation it must have to learn that how represent roles and responsibilities to other members of the staff. It is considered as an essential part to be a leader or manager. It must have to attain a proper knowledge about the strengths and weakness of each and every employee. How much management and control they need, when to take a step back from work and let the employee free to do the operation. An employee must let to work free and stopped to manage their task is a way to maintain a balance and this is a skill of the manager. A perfect engineering manager will allow the colleagues to evolve their potential but there is a guidance required and feedback of the work is need in some work.
It has been concluded that engineering skills plays a vital and essential role in management as it helps to present value calculations and internal rate of review. It helps the organisation in cost estimating, earning the value management. It also helps in developing the essential cost controls that is required for constructing the costs. It helps the manager in solve the problems of the team members and internal problems of the organisation. It helps them to assure the costs of the project, dealing with the problems and challenges. It will help the team members to obtain the job satisfaction and it is provided by the engineering manager and helps in letting the work in a faster way (Liguo and Caixia, 2020). It allows the employees to work with the dedication and performs in completing the task in an essential way. Developing skills and working as a manager helps it to obtain more and more knowledge about the work and helps to develop more creative things in an organisation. It helps attain knowledge about the leadership and its skills which allows the manager to communicate better and learn new things with in an innovative way. An engineering management skill helps the manger to develop its horizon and allows them to be a creative manager. It has been considered that to be a manager, there are various challenges and problems that are faced in the work but despite of all problems the managers learns new things and develop its strength. It is essential in management as it helps in developing the strategic assessment (Rogovskii, et.al., 2020). These skills are not learned in engineering schools but these skills can be learned by performing their role by working as an engineer but some engineer lack in learning these skills in their entire life.
CONCLUSION
In the end it is concluded that the challenges of the manager role help in strengthen its skills and it also helps in supporting the professional development of the company. The career progress helps in re-energising the manger for the project that it is working for. It also helps the manager to replicate success for the organisation and for itself too. It resulted in educating the adjustment which is fit for the industry as it will allow them to look back on the previous operations of the organisation. It helps in identifying that where these application and knowledge about the project have modified in a perfect and better way.
