Psychological Theories of Stress

The popular psychological theories of stress gradually depend on The Emergency Theory, and Theory of Emotion. James and Lange: Theory of Emotion proposed their ideas showing greater relevance between the correlation of emotion and stress. Immediate succeeding of emotions do not depend on the perception of the stressful event, rather emotional state begins after the response of the body towards stress. In the words of James and Lange, the feeling of emotions or fear originates only after a person experience bodily changes like eyes turning widely open, fast breathing, heart racing, etc (Schneiderman et al.,  2005). All these indicates the fact that unless the emotional behavior is not linked to one’s brain, it is impossible to occur.

The Emergency Theory of Cannon is quite reverse to the theory of James and Lange, Theory of Emotion. According to Canon theory, “emotion in response to stress can actually occur even when the bodily changes are not present”. This theory also states that the internal physiologic response of human body is identifiable by brain at a slower speed then that of the functions of emotional response (Schneiderman et al.,  2005). This theory was proven by producing the “decorticated cats” where the cortex present in the brain of the cats is linked with the neural link.
