The meaning of culture: core cultural dimensions and the influence of Hofstede in cross-cultural research

This topic was covered in the second week of the module and it mainly aims at analysing the instances of culture alongside the influence of Hofstede’s model in the analysis of cross-cultural issues. In this session I was placed in a different group where I had no friends. This felt quite strange to me and created several difficulties in interacting with other members in my team. It is because the members within my team were having different cultural backgrounds that created difficulties in my interactions. For instance, I was having difficulties in communicating with them as they were not able to understand the language I was speaking. Besides, I was also struggling to make them understand my perspective.

This issue mainly arises from different languages spoken by my team members alongside different cultural norms and attitudes present within them. However, the fact that I was not able to make my point clear to my team members and it was leading to conflicts among the team members was frustrating and led to the loss of my calm in different situations in this module. On the other hand, English is the language spoken by every team member of mine and thus it provided me with a sense of satisfaction in terms of making myself clear in front of my team members (Sent and Kroese, 2022). Nonetheless, based on the challenges faced in this module, I can say that having frequent and open communications with team members will be effective in mitigating cross cultural communication issues in a group.

Culture, Organisation and HRM

This topic was covered in week 3 and it mainly deals with the management of cross-cultural instances within an organisation along with introducing corporate culture, global culture management skills and others. The preparation for the presentation of our group based on the current module is going well as our team is highly effective in making frequent communication with each other through meetings, phone calls and others despite several cultural issues. However, the team coordination is not going as planned due to different cultural notions within different team members. For instance, some of the team members prefer to share their notes for presentation in front of the team while some members believe in individual efforts and do not share presentation related aspects.

This creates difficulties in coordination for the presentation. In this respect it can be stated that culture plays a major role in implementing coordination within the presentation. Besides, these aspects are also influencing the decision making within my team because to make any decision we need to consider different cultural notions present in our team and that further creates difficulties in coming to a mutual decision (Roscoe et al. 2019). I also think that working virtually is often challenging in cross-cultural interaction because communicating virtually does not reflect the same amount of emotion as it can be reflected through face-to-face communication. Nonetheless, reporting at the same time and frequent communication within my team reflects proper team culture that can bring high success in accomplishing targeted goals.

Understanding Managerial Environments

This topic was covered in week 4 and it mainly deals with the consideration of cross-cultural differences in different managerial behaviours alongside differences in values, motivation cultures and ethics from managerial perspective. In the 4th week the working of my team for the presentation has improved compared to the previous week. It is because, in this week we were highly experienced in managerial environments related to cross cultural issues. In addition to this, this week also provided us with a detailed perspective regarding the values, ethics, motivation and cultural instances of organisation while handling cross cultural differences. In this respect it can be stated that a detailed overview of the managerial perspective helped a lot in preparing for the presentation while the issue of coordination still created a barrier for proper preparation regarding the presentation.

This mainly arises due to differences in cultural values of different members and that has impacted the overall preparation for the presentation (Nguyen et al. 2019). There are four members in our team and our relationship is bounded by team culture and dynamic. On the other hand, we are trying to accomplish the overall presentation collectively, however some of the members due to having different cultural values are trying to work individually and that is impacting the nature of overall presentation. In this respect improper coordination is one of the big challenges that are creating barriers in executing a proper presentation while team dynamics and culture is working as potential opportunities in this scenario and helping in executing a proper presentation.

Cross-cultural communication

This topic was covered in week 6 of the current module and it involves the concepts of the skills in developing global management instances alongside the significance of communication and possible constraints in interpersonal communication within cross-cultural context. In this week I have encountered differences in cross cultural communication based on team presentations. It is because as the members in my team were having different cultural backgrounds therefore, it also reflected in the difference of languages. Difference in the language of communication created barriers in understanding each other’s perspective within the team that created hindrance in executing proper presentation. However, as all the members of our team were highly aware of the English language, therefore it created ease in shaping our interaction with each other.

It is because through the understanding of language spoken by each other we were able to understand each other’s perspective that further helped in implementing coordination and communication for executing the team’s presentation (Koponen, 2019). We also made certain adjustments based on the working pattern of our team. It is because different members consist of different cultural values that also reflect on working style. In this respect having the same working style can be impactful for others and can also affect team members’ performance. In this respect, we adopted a working style that suits the different requirements of cross-cultural values. Based on these instances, we were able to make proper adjustments with team members that further led to proper communication and collaboration and impacted positively on the preparation for the presentation.
