Information overload is a clear problem in today’s world. A study was conducted to understand the nature of information consumption online. Based on the data collected, a pie chart was created to depict the channels through which information is consumed by people today. 33% of the online information seeking is done through the smartphone, while another 30% is done through laptops. Only 19% is done through tablets and 14% through desktop computers, while others include only 4%.
The data clearly suggests that the portability and accessibility of the device has a huge role to play in the use of the device for online information seeking. Tran et al. (2020) suggest that this increase in degree of accessibility to portable devices have led to an increase in addiction towards the internet while reducing productivity.
Information overload has been a major concern as this means that the users are making decisions irrelevant to their personal and professional gain on the internet which leads to decision fatigue while not taking relevant decisions that would impact their future quality of life.
