 Week two: How does a leader tailor rewards to a situation in the path-goal theory of leadership?

The path-goal theory of leadership refers to a leader’s behavior in improving the motivation, performances, and satisfaction levels within their employees through effective leadership skills. According to the words of Jabbar and Hussin (2018), the path-goal theory of leadership helps in providence of best strategies through supporting attitudes from leaders guiding employees towards further satisfaction. Moreover, leaders are also found to effectively utilise path-goal theory to reduce the communication gap between the employees and management. As per the words of Farhan (2018), leaders are essentially found to focus on the social needs of employees while rewarding them for completion in any successful task completion. Thus, the concerned leadership theory is effective in maintaining the emotional stability and growth levels for employees working within any organisation. Moreover, the concerned theory also guides the managers of firms in driving their employees under the best circumstances to reach pre-defined goals of the same. Therefore, leaders are found to be freely changing their leadership styles according to situations and requirements of goals.

Week three: Personality dimensions of extraversion and agreeableness

Personality dimensions have been formulated through the principle theory originating back in 1949 which has significantly highlighted 5 major personality traits, namely agreeableness, extraversion, “openness”, “conscientiousness” and “neuroticism”. Therefore, the personality trait of extraversion highlights gaining energy from the company of others. As opined by McCabe and Fleeson (2012), socially interactive people can be considered as extroverted, depicting various traits like assertion, talkative, or demand for emotional responsiveness. Furthermore, it also helps in ascertaining the emotional levels among individuals who can be classified into introverts or extroverts. Introverts are found to prefer solitude and lower social energy within people while extroverts are more open towards facing public roles within various working positions of sales, marketing, or politics.

On the contrary, the words of Oshioet al. (2018) states that “big five personality theory” incorporate agreeableness traits as optimistic views towards the nature of human beings. Moreover, the concerned dimension of personality undertakes different attributes of human psychology like kindness, affection, altruism, trust, and other social behaviors. Therefore, people with higher agreeableness levels are found to be cooperative towards their co-workers and often lead to a competitive approach in their working abilities. In addition to that, the current personality trait also helps to prioritise other’s needs above someone’s own due to increased levels of empathy and pleasure through helping others.

Week four: Four elements of emotional intelligence essential for effective leadership and why?

The four different elements of emotional intelligence are referred to as “Self-awareness”, “Self-management”, “Social awareness” and relationship management. Moreover, self-awareness is found to be essential for improving the emotions and strengths along with different weaknesses exerted by individuals (Gopinath, 2020). Thus, the concerned perceptions are also found to impact the overall performance of individuals and team performance. On the contrary, self-management highlights the management of emotions during stressed situations for improving the positive final outlooks overlooking the setbacks occurring. Therefore, with the assistance of emotional intelligence, a person can efficiently manage their self-motivation levels through intentionally responding towards adversity and stress levels.

Social awareness can be considered as an ability to consider emotions and the mentality of surrounding people within an organisation or other individuals. Furthermore, having a social awareness level helps leaders to manage their employees based on their emotional levels. Therefore, it helps managers and leaders to efficiently mitigate or understand the emotionally connected problems of other working members. Relationship management is essential for leaders as it helps them to coach and influences their employees by quickly mitigating their problems through properly addressing the issues (Dewnarainet al. 2019). Researchers have also highlighted wasted company resources on unresolved issues through gossip or decreased team morale. Therefore, RM also emerged to be a significant emotional intelligence in effective leadership levels.
