Advantages and Disadvantages of Project management methodologies

AGILE

The agile methodology of project management was established in 2001. Although it has been more than 20 years for this methodology to be established, it has yet to establish its ground as one of the popular project management methodologies for project managers.

The agile methodology of project management was designed while keeping the IT industry and the software industry in mind (Rush and Connolly, 2020). http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment SampleAlthough it was developed for specific industries such as IT and software, it has become relevant to other industries as well.

The agile framework of project management uses small development cycles which are called sprints for the incessant improvement of the project. Sprints are the time allocated for each task of a project (Miller, 2020).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample Each individual task is supposed to be completed within this time period only. The agile methodology of project management provides a clear understanding of the expectations of the stakeholders of the project. It allows the project manager to identify the needs and requirements of the stakeholder.

Advantages

  • The Agile methodology of project management is highly flexible. This framework of project management allows the organization to execute changes in the midway of the project efficiently (Buganová and Šimíčková, 2019). http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment SampleThe implementation of the changes in this model are more efficient.
  • This framework is not affected by the limited knowledge of the end product. The implementation of the project does not get affected by the limited knowledge of the end product.
  • The requirements and needs of the stakeholders are easily met with frequent review cycles.

MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

Figure 1: Advantages of Agile Methodology, 2022

(Source: Java Point, 2022)

Disadvantages

  • The agile methodology of project management lacks in the project flexibility due to lack of understanding. This project framework is not brief in the activities of the project, thus lacks in project flexibility.
  • Some companies might not be comfortable with this agile methodology of project management because of their unmatched culture.
  • The process of estimation and predicting is often difficult when using Agile methodology of project management, since there is a lack of predictability.

Adaptive Project Framework (APF)

The APF stands for adaptive project framework. This methodology of project management is designed for the incessant adaptation to the project changes and incorporation of learning from these changes (Jaggars and Jones, 2018). http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment SampleThis project management framework depends on a fundamental concept which states that within a constraint of budget and specified time, the project scope is variable.

This framework focuses on increasing the value of business by adjusting after each change for the scope of the project. This type of changes is often occurred due to changes by the client or the stakeholders. These changes often decide the business value by this project. This project framework states that after change is implemented, the stakeholders or the client can alternate the scope of the project based on the learnings of the previous change. This is why the teams in this project framework are able to create more value for the business.

 Advantages

  • This methodology can be opted by businesses who have a clear vision of how the project is to be executed but do not have a clear purpose of the project.
  • During the phase of project initiation, the requirements are not needed to be predefined.
  • The adaptive project framework is iterative and flexible.

Disadvantages

  • The APF methodology of project management is too flexible (Özkan and Mishra, 2019). This makes the project to often experience sudden increase in costs and can also cause delay in the project.
  • This framework also allows unrealistic expectations to be set by the client or the stakeholders.
  • The process of the APF methodology is eradicated and confusing because of limited control on the project.

Agile methodology for Hilti

For the project of digital transition from old SAP to the new Salesforce system, Hilti should opt for the agile project management framework (Szreder et. al. 2019).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample This is because the agile project management framework is highly flexible and can allow project managers to make changes midway of the project. Since the project of Hilti has been initiated in 2018 has reached the mid stage of the project and the initial tasks have been completed.

Thus, the agile methodology of project management will be best suited for Hilti to develop a project management strategy (Woźniak, 2021). http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment SampleThe agile framework is also not affected by the limited knowledge of the product. In this case the end product is the ability of the organization to use the Salesforce system to critically analyse the performance and manage their employees.

Although there are some disadvantages to the project model for Hilti such as it might not be suitable for some companies. Although Hilti has a flexible organizational culture, and with the correct change management models, this project framework can be easily implemented by the project managers (Galli, 2018).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

Lastly the agile framework of project management will help Hilti to address the needs and requirements of the stakeholders with the help of constant review cycles. This framework believes in taking feedback, and because of the nature of the project this framework will appropriately dwell with the project.

Task F Managing and Leading Change

Nudge theory of change management for Hilti

The nudge theory of change management depends on the behavioural science. This theory suggests that manipulating the people for making a specific action or taking a decision should be done using subtle direction and not forcing them to do it (Ackah, 2019). http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

This theory of change management was developed by Richard Thaler, an economist from America. This change management model is often used by governments to manipulate the citizen’s behaviour.

The nudge theory is popularly known as Choice Architecture also. This theory can be used to manipulate and design the process of decision making of the employees as well as encourage them and guide them towards the achievement of the organizational goals. The nudge theory performs best when combined with a strategy (Aljamee and Naeem, 2020).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample Thus, to identify what are the factors which are restricting the employees from making the desired change should be the initial step of this change model. After this the nudging techniques can be implemented to steer the employees towards the desired action or decision.

Since the project of Hilti is to make the employees reskilled of the new Salesforce system, they need to convert their 32,000 employees into learners. Since the project was initiated back in 2018 it has reached a stage where the employees are needed to be trained and reskilled with the new Salesforce system to achieve the next milestone (Tawse et. al. 2019).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

To motivate and guide the employees to train for the new Salesforce system and implement this change in the organization collectively, the nudge theory of change management can be used appropriately. The following are the steps which the project leader of Hilti can take to implement the change management model and involve their employees in the project.

Clarifying the goals – Hilti needs to identify the obstacles which might come in the path of training the employees. These challenges might be resistance from some employees to acquire the new skills, training such a large number of employees of Hilti and lastly to retain the employees fearing the change (Kankane et. al. 2018).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample These can be mitigated by clearly defining the changes.

The change model suggests that the project leader should work their way backwards from the goal to implement the changes which are crucial and has the minimalist issues. Thus, by establishing a goal, Hilti can motivate and encourage their employees too rescale for the new Salesforce system.

MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

Figure 2: Elaborate delineation of the Nudge Theory of change management, 2022

(Source: Crow Jack, 2022)

Analysing the impact – Hilti should develop training sessions with tests for the employees, to analyse the impact of the change management strategy. Also, employee feedbacks can be taken by L2 analyse the strategy of implementing this change.

This will provide Hilti assurance and guidance towards possible changes needed to make in the project. Since the key stakeholders of this project are the employees, as they are the ones who need to reskill and train themselves, Hilti should focus on getting their feedback also.

Preparing a timeline – Preparing a timeline can help Hilti to schedule their nudging techniques for the implementation of the change. This schedule should be prepared and communicated across the organization using notices and announcements (Tummers, 2019).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

By preparing a timeline, the organization can establish short term goals within which certain tasks are to be completed. The project manager can conduct this change model while also staying on the path of the agile project management framework.

Choosing a technique – For integrating the implementation of change and engaging the employees in the project, several nudging techniques should be identified by the project leader of Hilti. It will provide the project manager to leverage this technique to make the employees comfortable with the change in the organization (THIS, 2018). http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample

The feedback gathered in the last stage of the change model can be used to identify which nudging technique should be used by Hilti to train the employees and make them more engaged in the digital transformation.

Starting to nudge – After identifying the nudging theories, rolling out these techniques should be the next step by the project leader. While these nudging techniques are being implemented, the project leader should also consider taking constant feedback and data from the employees as to how their approach to the training is. Establishing a time frame which is realistic can provide insights which can help the project leader to adjust the techniques accordingly.

Flexibility – Changes are often difficult to integrate in organization with such large employee count. Thus, it is essential for the project leader of Hilti to be flexible and respond to the acceptance of change in the organization (Rosenfield, 2018).http://MSc Management Project Management Assignment Sample The relationship of the employees should be considered with their training, as well as their peers.

The project leader needs to be flexible to the new changes which may occur in the process of the change implementation. This will make the organisation address the needs and requirements of the employees and assure that the implementation is done accurately.

Concluding Remarks

With the help of the above report, it can be summarized that Hilti needs to assure a structured and well-planned project management framework starting from the selection to the end of implementing change in their organization. The report included several project management frameworks and methodologies to critically evaluate the scenario of Hilti to transform their digital system from an old SAP to a new Salesforce.

For the project selection for Hilti a project portfolio matrix can be used to determine which organizational structure should be used during the project. Since Hilti focuses on involving everyone and transforming their digital systems to a new Salesforce system, they should obtain a team based organizational structure.

The report included the video analysis of Hilti Which showed the internal resources of the company to be leveraged during the project. The Porters five forces were used to identify the external forces which can influence the project of digital transformation. Hilti should adopt and matrix organizational structure which will help them to evolve technical surge in terms of technical targets.

The different project governance frameworks were also analysed in the report, where the agile project management methodology suits Hilti in their digital transformation.
The report also included the role of the project leader for Hilti. It also showed how the project champion should be managed.  The agile methodology of project management was identified as the best for Hilti to integrate in their project management.

A nudge theory of change management was analysed to integrate change management model in the scenario of Hilti. It also showed how the different stakeholders can be involved in the project. The nudge theory of change management states that the change should be implemented by manipulating the employees using nudging techniques. These techniques can help the employees as well as the project leader to integrate the desired change in Hilti’s digital transition.
