 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS RELATED TO CAREER

Introduction

The following report will be based on my personal development plan for the future. I am a disciple of BSc (Hons) Business and Management. In this respect, I have an urge to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and thus, I need to develop certain things in myself which will be portrayed in the below report. Personal development is the much-needed element, which should be considered by every individual to acknowledge their own stretch and shortcomings along with focusing on how to resolve those issues. In this context, several skills will be highlighted in the below report which requires an individual to have an effective development in oneself.

Professional development goals

Professional goals are the objectives that I must set in order to advance my professional career and expand my competencies and skills at the work. There are various developmental goals that can then be set to enhance organisational success, and the specific goals selected should indeed be based on the individual’s career desires (Williams Jr et al. 2018). Self-improvement, acquiring new qualifications or certificates, gaining more knowledge in a certain field, rising forward in the company, and pursuing any other professional goals are all examples of objectives. Professional development goals need to be created as it provides a vision of the future along with helping to improve the knowledge along with becoming a better employee in the workplace (Caiado et al. 2018). In this context, Adult learning theory can be undertaken for the current report.

Adult learning theory is often defined as discovery learning. It classifies many methods in which adults generally respond to instruction and is essential in gaining knowledge for any trainer. Adult learning is an uncomplicated idea to comprehend; moreover, the theory tries to exhibit how adult learning differs from that of children and to find the styles of learning that are most appropriate for individuals (Picciano, 2017). As the theory suggests, it has assumptions, which are being preferred by the learner to develop themselves. A sense of self-concept is one of them, which makes an individual from dependent to independent with the passing period of time; along with this, experiences also play a huge role in learning and improving knowledge. While proceeding towards learning something, I have to build my mentality to get ready, which is one of the assumptions, the theory, has reflected. Along with this, I am aligned towards practical learning, which helps me to learn from its core. Furthermore, the most important element is motivation; it plays as the game-changer for every individual to move forward even failing several times. In my life, I have learned the most important skills, which I think will help me to move forward in my professional career is problem-solving skills. Problem-solving skills are the most common as well as essential factors, which are considered by the recruiters while recruiting staff in an organisation.

Amongst the most significant components of human endeavour is personality development. It has everything to do with individual accomplishment. Since the hospitality industry is concerned with meeting the demands of the wider population, it is critical for all of those who work within the industry to concentrate on developing the correct persona that will enable them to flourish (Higgins-Desbiolles and Monga, 2021). Moreover, incorrect behaviour will lead to customers being dissatisfied. Therefore, I need to build my communication skills, knowledge and compassion to flourish in the industry, as it has become my sole goal to serve in the hospitality industry.

Skills required for increasing the professional development

In the context of professional development, several skills are required to be developed which are being described below. Moreover, the skills will be interlinked while using Self-determination theory. Self-determination is a key conception that alludes to an individual’s capacity to act and regulate their entire life. This skill is essential to one’s psychological wellbeing and health (Ryan and Deci, 2020). People who have self-determination believe they possess self – control in their life. Furthermore, it also has an effect on motivation.

In this respect, Competence is the one, which is accurate as per my situation. As the theory suggests that competence is the one, where the individual requires mastery of the skills and hence, for developing myself for my better future career I need to master the following key skills.

Communication skills

Communication skills are the most required in the hospitality industry, as I have to acknowledge and understand how to greet every single individual along with making them engage as well. Communication skills will reflect the behaviour and sensibility of a certain approach, which has the possibility to impress the customer (Wilmot et al. 2019).

Friendliness

Being friendly in the hospitality industry will allow me to make friends along with acquire certain skills, which will help me to sustain myself in the industry for a longer period of time. Furthermore, developing friendliness will help me to influence the people as per the benefits of a firm or an organisation, which will allow an individual to be noticeable in front of the HR (Belmi et al. 2020).

Empathy

Empathy will allow me to build connections in the workplace (Longmire and Harrison, 2018). The more I will have a connection it will be easy for me to get along with the business environment. Empathy builds loyalty, a sense of trust, which is an advantage in the hospitality industry, as it will allow me to relate with the customers as well as my fellow members in the workplace as well.

Open mindedness

Open mindedness will allow me to embrace different perspectives of the people along with understanding new experiences and ideas while it will be an advantage to improve my critical thinking ability.

Feedback

Feedback is the most important method, which is required for my personal development as taking feedback will allow me to acknowledge my shortcomings and boost myself to work beyond my potential.

Emotional intelligence and respect

With regards to ensure distinctive professional development, increasing significance of emotional intelligence and respect can be notified. As per my concern, emotional intelligence can improve self-ability of understanding, utilising and managing emotions in a positive way for overcoming challenges and stress, conflict and others. An indirect relationship of emotional intelligence can also be signified with effective communication that might play a leading role to enhance the prospects of professional development from an individual perspective. Respect is equally weighted from the consequences of professional development as workplace respectful behaviour can be supportive to enlarge both personal and professional accountability of an individual. With regards to this concern, I can signify both respect and emotional intelligence as the topmost criterion to ensure professional development in a successful way.

Confidence

Confidence has been another significant skill that is eternally related to enhance self-efficiency in the professional world. In order to comply with the attributes of self-determination theory as mentioned above, confidence can play a significant role to help conceptualising the inherent growth tendencies of people in the workplace. In this context, I think that confidence has been maintaining a transverse relationship with the emergence of workplace motivation.

Personal development goals related to the career

In relation to my career in the hospitality industrial job, I need to develop my practicing personal skills. In accordance with this understanding, my personal development goals are highlighted below-

To improve decision-making skills

My problem-solving skills have been efficient as mentioned above. Hard working skills are eventually obtained by me due to which I was able to receive many rewards. With regards to this concern, I think that I need to focus on improving my decision-making skills as an integral part of ensuring personal development in the field of hospitality industry. Profound decision-making attributes can be highly beneficial in terms of managing relational conflicts and issues raised in the workplace (Ampountolas et al. 2019). Moreover, prolific improvement of decision-making skills can eventually at a greater value to signify my internal leadership attributes within the workplace, which can support my future career growth to a large extent. Apart from that, I also observed the significance of decision-making in the jobs related to the hospitality field. It eventually created a sense of urgency among me regarding the modification of self-capability to comply with the hospitality industrial jobs. My hard working skills can highly support this personal development goal based on which I might be able to experience prolific personal growth in future.

To develop internal leadership skills

The hospitality industrial jobs usually require extended leadership skills. Profound leadership ability can be supportive for ensuring distinctive career growth in the hospitality sector. In this regard, my personal development goal also complies with the development of internal leadership. I am looking forward to improve my body language with an assertive mindset, increase my trustworthiness in front of subordinates and teammates, and enlarge my accountability as an efficient leader in the workplace. Karagianni and Jude Montgomery (2018) stated that effective leadership can be supportive for personal and professional improvement. In this concern, I need to comply with extended emotional intelligence, eagerness to accept responsibility, action-oriented judgement and others. These common leadership traits can be supportive to efficiently conceptualise my credibility as an effective leader while serving within the hospitality sector. Moreover, I can also find out future opportunities of improving my personal growth under the lights of extended motivation and dedication that could be signified the most important factor for the development of leadership skills. The motivational capability, in this case, might generate distinctive value in terms of extending self-credibility as a profound leader in the hospitality sector jobs.

To modify existing communication and collaboration skills

Communication and collaboration is the topmost concern for ensuring both personal and professional development for an individual (Saldo and Walag, 2020). My personal development goal highly emphasises the improvement of communication and collaboration skills. Prolific collaboration can be highly supportive for ensuring purposeful consideration of relational hospitality industry responsibilities. Effective interaction with other respective team members might also add a greater value in this concern where I might be able to find out significant future opportunities of improving my professional performance. Moreover, the consideration of efficient workplace relationship maintenance might also develop an internal workplace environment from my perspective that could efficiently signify my future growth from both personal and professional direction.

Conclusion

The overall report has provided a reflective understanding to conceptualise extended personal and professional growth and development. In this regard, the professional development goals are signified from my career perspective with the analysis of the adult learning theory. The self-determination theory has been evaluated that has maintained a significant interrelation with the improvement of different skills including communication and friendliness, feedback and emotional intelligence, empathy and confidence and others. The personal development goals, in this case, are also complying with the improvement of decision-making, internal leadership aspects, and communication skills. With regards to this concern, the future professional development aspects highly enlighten the improvement of critical thinking concern along with the extension of loyalty and trustworthiness in the workplace with a respectful and confident behaviour.
