1.0 Introduction

The “Yang Sing Hotel” which opened in July 2008 in the Manchester province was a luxury hotel that provided design suites, bedrooms, and boutique services in a 48-room designed hotel. The “Yang Sing Hotel” was launched by the Managing Director of “Yang Sing Oriental” Garry Yeung, who invested 8 million found into the hotel project. The “Yang Sing Hotel” provided specially designed bedrooms and hotel suites that were inspired by the cultures of South Asian and East Asian countries namely India China Thailand and Japan. The building of the hotel is listed as a grade II warehouse with internal columns made of cast iron, masonry walls on the external side and timber beams. The project site was vacant for several years and it required extensive repair to prevent it from further deterioration. The hotel project worth £8 million adjoint the “Yang Sing Cantonese” restaurant with successfully has been operating for the last 30 years. The “Yang Sing Oriental” was operated by the Yueng brothers with the tariff ranging from £179 to £ 569 for a night stay. TripAdvisor an international travel website ranked the “Yang Song Oriental” as the best hotel out of 147 hotels in Manchester City based on the popularity of the hotel and the critic there are also impressed by the services provided by the hotel.

After the launching of the hotel, the city witnessed a recession due to which the hotel operated on 60% of employee strength and it also provided discounts to the guest in order to sustain the hotel. But after 8 months of hard work by the Managing Director of the hotel, “Yang Sing Oriental” was put into liquidation.  After the liquidation, the hotel got a new owner, who plans to relaunch the hotel under a new name. A new project manager has been hired to look into the problems face by the earlier hotel and to prepare a report to plan and control the management of the hotel. This project revolves around the rebranding of the hotel by focusing on the stakeholders, planning, scheduling, managing risk, and discussing strategies to make the new hotel work.

2.0 Project mission, aims, and objective

2.1 Aim and mission

The aim of the project is to tackle the problems that caused “Yang Sing Oriental” to close and going into liquidation. Even after purchasing the “Yang Sing Oriental” hotel, the new owner has hired a project manager to look into the reasons due to which the luxurious boutique hotel had to close its operations and due to the loss of operating the business on little to know earnings and profit had to put into liquidation (Othman et al., 2018). The mission of the project is to collect more information on the failure of “Yang Sing Oriental” despite providing personalized choices and preferences to the guests, along with providing a range of other luxurious services that can give the guest individualized hotel suites and services.

Stakeholders’ management is important to active project management in socio-cultural activity. It is essential to inform about the regular activities of the important stakeholders and to engage in regular meetings to discuss the ongoing project. The different stakeholders in the hotel project are senior management, project managers, field personnel, staff, project management, and the customers.

3.4 Controlling stakeholder engagement

The engagement of stakeholders of the project can be controlled by arranging timely meetings and informing the stakeholders within a particular time about the status and agenda of the project as per requirement (Chierici et al., 2019). The communication modes used to engage with the stakeholders can be either through a face-to-face meeting or by sending email for hard copies of the reports. When project management engages in a project they plan, direct and develop the project system within the scheduled time of the project and the economical timeframe. The person who mostly engages in Planning the project directing and developing the project system is the project manager. The project manager has to maintain the task and activities which are undertaken in the project and to ensure that each task and activity is successfully completed within the allocated time. This completion of the project within the stipulated time ensures that the project will be completed as per the plan and no extra expenditure will be spent on it if in the event the project is prolonged due to non-completion of tasks and activities. When the project is completed efficiently the next task related to it can be started simultaneously working of the project management on several tasks at a time saves and minimizes the duration of the project thereby ensuring that the project is completed and implemented successfully. As the “Yang Sing Oriental” hotel project was also completed within the desired schedule and it was launched at a time when the economic conditions we are not in a good shape in Manchester City leading to a reduction in the number of guests that arrived in the hotel due to which the hotel management had to work on its reduced strength. The managing director of the company despite investing more money to sustain the business, the hotel did not last long for more than 8 months. Thus, project management not only works for planning designing, and scheduling the project but also helps the clients in managing the economical frame. Owing to the bad economic condition in Manchester City due to the worst recession period the world has observed after the great recession in the 1930s, the hotel management was not able to sustain the dire economic situation leading to the liquidation of the hotel within 8 months of operations on 2nd March 2009. Analysis of the project by using the PESTLE method or any other analysis method may provide more information on the methods of process and operations in the “Yang Sing Oriental”.

5.0 Planning and scheduling

In project management planning and scheduling deal with the process which is most appropriate for implementing the project and to achieve the aims and objective of the project (Landrocile et al., 2019). Planning in project management is the method through which the project and its task and activities are planned and suitable policies are used for the success of the project. It is important that for the appropriate conflict management within the hotel adequate strategies corresponding to the management of people are employed as most of the conflict that occurs within a business are internal and are very detrimental to the overall business operations and there is a need for their proper control. Therefore, five different people management strategies that need to be used for the reduction of the conflict within the business organization are as follows:

  • Operations involving recruitment and selection

Using proper recruitment criteria to help select the most desirable individuals for the job can drastically improve the conflicts which most often occur due to unwilling people that lack interest in the company (Selçuk et al., 2020). An adequate recruitment cell can help hire the rightful individuals and not relying entirely on source recommendations to help develop a better workforce for the company.

Sponsor supports any other organization by investing and providing funds to a non-profit organization or by donating for raising money for a good cause, thereby advertising themselves are their company to attract more customers and build up better and larger customer range.

As the earlier owners of the hotel “Yang Sing Oriental” due of lack of funds and investment in the luxurious boutique hotel had to undergo liquidation, it will be a better approach for the new owners of the hotel to secure funds by sponsorship and investments through other organizations and business personnel (Sun et al., 2020). By looking for a prospective sponsor, the hotel will receive good publicity and it may get benefits thereby attracting new customers to the hotel.

The previous owners of the hotel invested 8 million euros into the hotel to make it luxurious and to provide its high-quality 5-star services to the guest. Since the new owner aims to provide services by maintaining the previous customer service quality, there is a requirement for financing in the hotel management project (Yang-Hyun et al., 2018). Many real estate investors and consultants receive requests and inquiries from different developers and owners of organizations seeking investment in their hospitality projects both at the national and international levels (Müller et al., 2019). Sponsorship has become a new trend in the project management sector to receive necessary funds in order to sustain the business and both the sponsors and the receiving organization benefit through this process (Demirkesen et al., 2017). The sponsors receive the exposure they need in the public domain, and the receivers of the Investments are able to successfully run their businesses through the investment they receive from the sponsors. Thus, sponsorship provides benefits for both parties.

7.3 Recommendations

The following recommendation may the new owners of the hotel to recognize the shortcomings and effectively tackle the problems faced by the previous owner of the “Yang Sing Oriental” hotel.

  1. Paying attention to critical projects
  2. Making strategies to maintain order and path of the project
  3. Ensuring the availability of resources when needed
  4. Assigning the project’s task to efficient leaders and managers
  5. Ensuring that the critical information regarding the project is shared with the project management team members
  6. Focussing on the aims and objectives for the project
  7. Ensuring that the management team is motivated and driven to successfully complete the project

In project management of the hotel project, the issues faced by them is focusing on the critical aspects of the project by completing the task and activities within the stipulated time in an efficient and productive manner. In the project, there are many tasks that are interrelated and it is impossible to complete the task without properly syncing the critical paths of the project (Radujković et al., 2017). It is necessary that the management receive and provide it the resources to the employees when required. The flexibility of the project managers and the management team will provide the essential support required to complete the project successfully (Ika et al., 2020). Thus, by securing a sponsor to invest in the project the new owner should go ahead with the project, and the above-stated recommendation will assist the new owner and the management to tackle the issues faced by the previous owners.

8.0 Discussion and conclusion

In this report, we have discussed “Yang Sing Oriental” Hotel, its background and liquidation, and the hotel acquiring a new owner to provide high-quality services in Manchester City to the guest arriving in the hotel by providing them with better than expected services. We have prepared and discussed the missions and objectives of the project. We have also discussed the stakeholders and their importance in the hotel management project. A proper discussion has been made on the planning of the project along with scheduling using the different matrix, and graphical visualization of planning and scheduling with the use of “Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)”, Gnatt chart of effectively understand the project and the task and activities related with it.  As the new owners of the hotel were concerned about going ahead with the project, risk management was discussed in the project. Some recommendations have been made to deal with the conflicts which arise in the project. The necessity of a sponsor was also discussed along with making some recommendations that will help the new owners and the project management team to go ahead with the project while focusing on the aim and objective of the project.
