Define Project Methodology and its role in the project management

In the views of Solomon et al. (2015), project methodology is considered as a straightforward way to guide the team through the development and execution of phases, processes, and tasks throughout the management lifecycle. Basically, it helps to avoid the failure and reduce maximum risk and error and increases the chances of project success through complete the project on time with standard cost.

According to Balaji & Murugaiyan (2012), project methodology is the combination of practice, method, and processes. This mixture helps to identify how best plan, control and deliver the project with the continuous implementation process until the project successfully completed. This methodology supports the project till the successful completion of task and work.

Similarly, it also allows for developing the strategies for handling the problems which rise at the time of project implementation. There are several differences and similarities in both the methodologies i.e. Waterfall and Critical path method:-

Waterfall methodology offered more traditional approach through performing the activities by outlining all the steps of the project at the beginning while CPM follows more advanced tactic through the focus on schedules and task rather than plan the whole project (Rose, 2013).

Other than that, the waterfall is quite simple and well-proven method but it is considered as a time consuming while CPM method is complex but effective in terms to deliver the project within right time and cost. Moreover, waterfall emphasis on task progress while CPM emphasis on project progress.

Lastly, waterfall tends to be rigid system and has lacked the flexibility to deal with the changeable while CPM is more flexible and incorporate changes in the project as generally this situation is more occur when the project is for the long term. Thus, in that case, CPM is more suitable for the long construction projects.

According to Kerzner & Kerzner (2017), the similarities in both the methodologies are that objective of methodologies is common and same. The aim of the methods is to complete the project successfully. Similarly, both focus on the elimination of risk by outlining all the steps of the projects or task. Other than that, the end result of methodologies is also same as the project is completed on time within the decided cost.

At the same time, project manager under the methodologies emphasis more on the people skills as they believe that people and without having a proper knowledge, the manager can’t able to conduct the project successfully. Thus, these areas define the similarities between the waterfall and CPM methodologies.

Waterfall methodology related to the project life cycle

Waterfall Model is considered as process model as in this each phase is completed before the next phase can begin so it reduces the chances of overlapping in the phases. Waterfall model is the SDLC approach towards the project development.

The waterfall approach addresses the project life cycle through divided into the separated phases. The outcome of one phase acts as an input for the next phase. Through this manner, all phases completed on time and it increases the probability of project success (Shankar et al., 2010).

The waterfall model is a sequential design process which flows downwards through the phases such as a conception, initiation, analysis, design, testing, production, implementation and maintenances etc.

As the waterfall works similarly the project development life cycle also process in a linear sequential flow. Here are the sequential phases of waterfall life cycle model:-

  • Requirements: First phase includes what needs to design and what is the purpose of the project. Basically, the specification of input and output are studied in this phase (Ruparelia, 2010).
  • Project Design: As per the first phase, the project design is prepared. Project design involves the resources, capital and system architecture etc.
  • Implementation: With inputs from project design, the project is divided into small schedules and task. With the completion of each schedule then only project manager pursue another phase.
  • Integration and Testing: After the task developed in implementation phase then testing is conducted for each schedule and activity (Kwan & Leung, 2011). Testing is done so that no problem will occur in the future scenario.
  • Maintenances: This step occurs after the completion of the project. However, the bringing of modification and changes as per the client request is important. Especially under the construction projects where there is high need of maintenances the project so that future risk can be eliminated.

Thus, these are the waterfall sequential life cycle phase model which contributes towards the systematically performances of project activities.
