Differences That Exist Between Social, Sustainable And Christian Business

Introduction

This assignment is helpful in providing the differences that exist between social, sustainable and Christian business. It also helps to provide an understanding of the importance of leadership in determining the direction of a business and how employees are impacted by the choice of the leaders. At the same time, it also gives an insight on the models used for motivating the employees and the role it plays in a socially responsible business.

Part 1 –

A socially responsible business is oriented towards the fulfillment of social causes while sustainable business is oriented towards the achievement of targets like waste reduction, business sustainability projects, etc. Sustainable business is future-oriented whereas socially responsible business focuses on the past deeds to support the community welfare (Ferrell, et al., 2016).

Sustainable business is long-term oriented while socially responsible business is oriented towards present context. On the other hand, a Christian business is oriented towards faith in Jesus as it is operated with the right image and perspective. This business believes in doing the right things rather on focusing or doing the things which are providing an advantage or are useful or convenient.

The business organizations that work with integrity are deciding its decision which is based on principles of God- that is truth, honesty, and righteousness. Socially responsible business satisfies a present community need but they do not focus on underlying issues. There is a long-term thinking in sustainable business as they set goals and objectives in long-term and achieve them (Tang and Zhou, 2012).

Socially responsible business does not focus on the alignment with the business, but sustainable business does. Socially responsible business is oriented towards triple bottom line including the planet, profit, and people. On the other hand, the sustainable business focuses on the sustainable competitive advantage and tries to create shared value for the society.

While the Christian business says that one can excel in its business when one is committed to bringing excellence in products and services. When a business organization commits them to excellence they glorify the word of God. This Christian business is oriented towards creating shared values for the society and also fulfills the commitment which they have towards its people(Schaupp and Bélanger, 2014).

For example: In socially responsible business company carries out various CSR activities for the welfare of the society. In sustainable business General electric is utilizing its HRD to integrate sustainability into the culture of its company. The owner of Hobby Lobby follows the Christian business and believed that business should be run with harmony and God’s law.

Part 2 –

Every business needs to have an effective leader. A leader is one who influences, guides or motivates the others towards the achievement of the goal. He is the one who creates a vision of the future for the business. Leadership is important for the business and in return assists every organization to achieve success as well as stability (Yukl and Mahsud, 2010).

Leadership is also important for determining the direction of the business. Leadership helps the business in creating a clear vision, what is expected from the organization to achieve in future. This helps the employees also to know about the roles and responsibilities they should fulfill. At the same time leadership also helps the business in effective planning about the actions to be undertaken to achieve the organizational goals.

This helps the employees to identify and contribute to achieving the objectives of the organization (Avey, et al., 2011). Leadership will also help the organization to develop a healthy and better relationship between a leader and the team members, there will be better communication and it also helps to encourage the people to contribute to the creation of new ideas in the organization and utilize the diverse experience they have to further improve the organization.

Leadership is important in the business as it helps to convert the potential into the reality in the organization as well as it helps to increase the efficiency and productivity of the employees. Leadership helps the organization to remain focus at the time of crisis in the organization and encourage the employees to set short-term goals and achievable goals (Lian, et al., 2012).   An effective leader helps to guide the employees on the right track and help them to take the effective decisions. The Employees are also impacted by the choices of leaders.

Leaders put a positive impact on the employee’s performance as they feel more confident in performing their job and in deciding the decisions (Grant, 2012). The employees get the right guidance on which track they should move on to achieving the organizational goals. The choices made by the leaders help the employees to enhance their performance and to increase their productivity in the organization.

Part 3 –

Consider the models for motivating employees and the role they might play in a socially responsible business.

It is very important for an organization to keep motivating its employees so that they can enhance and improve their performance and provide better results to the company. Organizations should use different models for motivating the employees time to time.

The methods for motivating the employees are a goal-setting theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, theory y, etc. Goal-setting theory will motivate the employees by establishing specific goals for the employees that will increase their performance, and providing them difficult goals will result in higher performance (Bal, et al., 2012).

Theory y motivates the employees as it says that employees will exercise self-control and self-direction and employees learn to accept the responsibilities. The role it plays in socially responsible business is that it provides the benefits such as transparency in communication; the image is enhanced and improved, it helps to increase the productivity that will further help to increase society’s welfare (McWilliams, A., and Siegel, 2011).

Conclusion

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that there are differences in the socially responsible, sustainable and Christian business. It is also summarized that leadership has an importance in identifying the direction of the business and the choice of the leaders also has an impact on the employees. The models mentioned above also help to motivate the employees in engaging CSR.
