Introduction
Social media has become a regular part of people’s daily lives. With high penetration of social media into the personal lives, people have opted to stay virtually in touch with others and develop a deeper insight on each individual person’s individuality and personality in accordance with their postings and other activities on social media. With the advent of social media, people have access to all the activities of a person and their thoughts and beliefs through social media. This has also made people more vulnerable as others can access their personal lives and stories with just a search. It is crucial to identify the role of social media in the personal lives of others (Chung, 2019). The present study discusses the role of social media in judging the personality of a person and accurately understanding of the person.
Role of social media in judging the personality of a person
Social media has played an important role in changing the perception of connectivity amongst communities. It has been identified that social media has significantly changed the conceptions and helped people to connect and gather knowledge of the happenings and changes in the world. It has given people the opportunity to connect and express themselves through their postings and other activities on social media to spread the understanding of their individuality. In the opinion of Hinds and Joinson (2019), social media plays a crucial role in globalizing the world and reaching a space of awareness to understand what is going on around the world. It has become a source of information with inexpensive options to communicate with others. This also gives a scope to people to connect with strangers and people with whom they would not be able to otherwise interact in their physical world. It has also served as a hope for people to express themselves and create awareness among people of the injustices and knowledge of the changes around the world. This provides people with the opportunity to peek into the personal lives of others and provides them an opportunity to understand the personalities and individualities of others. As per the study of Pivec and Maček (2019), with increased penetration of social media into the personal lives of people, the line between public and private personas has blurred. People have started posting every detail on social media in search of likes, approval and validity from their online networks. This has also impacted their personal lives, living more in the virtual world. Their online personality portrays their public selves which has also decreased transparency and their consciousness of their true selves.
It has also become crucial that people utilize this opportunity on the right accounts. With increased penetration of social media into the personal lives of people, cases of infringement have also increased. The laws have been incompetent to catch these cyber crimes with people fearing that their personal information and data will be released. According to (Taber and Whittaker, 2018), it has become extremely crucial for the government to legislate proper laws to protect the security of people and maintain their individuality in the online platforms. Behind the garb of social media, many people have abused their anonymity to enter and infringe the rights of others along with decreasing their overall selves. It can be said that people can be judged by their postings on social media since it has become a mode of expression for people to portray themselves. Along with this, social media also portrays the selves that people wish to portray, which creates a discrepancy of their actual and social media personality. As stated by De Ridder (2017), the hankering for likes and validity continues, which has prompted people to photoshop their images and filter their personality before posting it on social media. The fear of being judged by others on social media and trolled online has caused people to return to shelves and develop a dislike for social media. According to Lievens and Johnson (2017), social media has always been promoted as a platform to connect and communicate with the world. It has been portrayed that social media brings people closer and develops a community belonging with inclusive and diverse scope for connecting with others. However, with time, the lack of proper regulation and intervention has developed a community of haters who are eager to troll and infringe on the personal rights of the people and still go unchecked and scot free due to their protection of anonymity (Weinstein, 2017). This has also made people more vulnerable as others can access their personal lives and stories with just a search. It is crucial to identify the role of social media in the personal lives of others. It is crucial that people observe certain ethical principles while treating others on social media as one would have done in a physical interaction. Judging people based on their social media postings will only create a discrepancy due to the lack of verifiability and lack of opportunity to actually meet with the person.
